NASDA Fall 2020 International Trade Programs Internship

The National Association of State Departments of Agriculture (NASDA), headquartered in Arlington, Virginia, is seeking highly motivated students who are interested in learning more about marketing and promotional activities in international export markets for U.S. agricultural products and commodities. 

Who is NASDA? 
NASDA is a nonpartisan, nonprofit association which represents the elected and appointed commissioners, secretaries, and directors of the departments of agriculture in all fifty states and four U.S. territories. Our Mission NASDA grows and enhances agriculture by forging partnerships and creating consensus to achieve sound policy outcomes between state departments of agriculture, the federal government, and stakeholders. 

About the Internship 
This internship is based in Arlington, VA. Schedule is flexible and will be determined pending the intern’s availability. All NASDA interns receive monthly stipends. Internship Responsibilities Include: 
  • Manage data collection of NASDA’s trade show exhibitors, including inquiries, participation, and evaluations. 
  • Promote NASDA trade show activity with written and graphic content via NASDA’s social media channels and weekly newsletters. 
  • Assist in preparing materials for foreign buyers and U.S. exporters who participate in NASDA’s trade shows. 
  • Work with NASDA consultants contacting trade show exhibitors to register them for one-on-one export consulting sessions at the Miami trade shows. 
  • Conduct market research to identify food and ag industry trends in international export markets. 
  • Assist with identifying and writing success stories about small and medium size food and ag exporters. 
  • Travel to major national food trade shows and organize meetings between exhibitors and an export consultant. 

Qualifications 
  • Possess excellent written and oral communication skills, and the ability to prioritize work • Interest in international business and agriculture is a plus 
  • Fall intern is required to travel to a major national food trade show in Miami, FL, September 23-24, 2019 
  •  Ability to be very detailed oriented and provide excellent customer service to a wide range of companies and producers

Position Summary/Purpose of Position:
Responsible for assisting Agricultural Technician Supervisors in the day-to-day operations and for maintenance of farm and specialized agricultural research equipment. Work with managers to coordinate activities for researchers and others performing research and extension activities at the facility. Carry out field work – tilling, planting, fertilizing, spraying, harvesting – for traditional and non-traditional agronomic and horticultural crops and research plots.

Qualifications:
Required–
• High School Diploma or GED.
• Three years’ experience with agricultural research.
• Valid Maryland Noncommercial Class C or equivalent driver’s license.

Preferred–
• Additional related agricultural experience and formal education that has provided knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.
• General knowledge and understanding of basic agricultural procedures, conservation practices, entomological problems, research protocols and basic field plot design.
• Knowledge of nutrient management regulations
• Ability to handle small and large scale farm equipment; must possess some degree of mechanical and carpentry skills; must possess skills to calculate and calibrate sprayers, fertilizer spreaders, planters and harvesting equipment; and the skills to operate agricultural equipment and computerized yield measurement equipment and GPS.
• Must have knowledge of EPA regulations for biotech crops and the ability to interpret & follow requirements/restrictions on research plots.
• Ability to provide guidance and training to agricultural technicians and workers; to use computers; must have good communication skills, both written and oral, and be able to interact with staff, researchers, vendors, general public, and others.

Additional Certifications:
• Maryland Commercial Driver's License (CDL) required or can be attained within one (1) year of employment.
• Maryland Public Agency Applicator's Certification required or can be attained within two (2) years of employment.

Citizens’ Climate Lobby is a national nonprofit organization that builds political will for climate solutions. Below are some upcoming opportunities for students and educators to take meaningful action on climate change: 

Environmental Advocacy Symposium 
The 2020 Environmental Advocacy Symposium will highlight research, teaching, and practice of environmental advocacy. The symposium will be held at Pace University in New York, June 10, 2020.
The Association of Environmental Science Studies Conference will follow the Environmental Advocacy Symposium from June 11-13 at Pace University. The theme this year is "research in action." Registration is now open.

Citizens’ Climate International Conference and Lobby Day 
More than 1500 volunteers will gather in Washington DC for the Citizens’ Climate International Conference and Lobby Day in June 2020. The conference includes two days of keynote speakers, breakout sessions, and workshops on climate. Then on Tuesday, we meet with all congressional offices to build support for the Energy Innovation and Carbon Dividend Act. Save the date June 7-9. 
Fellowships and Internships

Instructional Content 
We offer instructional content and experiential learning support on climate change, carbon pricing, and civic engagement. Educators can use our webinars, films, presentations, and readings in their courses. You can also request a CCL speaker to present to your class or campus. We are a part of the Bard Climate Speakers Network composed of expert national speakers on climate and energy in every state in the country. Speakers can be requested through the website at no charge. 

Earth Week Collaborations 
We can collaborate with you on Earth Week events, such as film showings, speakers, and tabling. We can support you in organizing an event to talk to your legislators about climate change. Our students have organized climate forums, lobby days, and direct actions. We can conduct skills workshops in topics like lobbying, social media advocacy, or writing letters to the editor. 

Endorsements 
CCL is currently working with our partner organizations to gain university presidents endorsements for the Higher Education Carbon Pricing Endorsement Initiative. Over fifty college and university presidents have signed onto the letter, and the initiative has been featured in Huffington Post, Inside Higher Ed, Wired Magazine, and the Emmy Award-winning documentary series Years of Living Dangerously.

Participate in a Food Choice Study and Earn a Free Meal!

Patricia Powell is a PhD candidate with The University of Queensland, School of Public Health in Australia, and she is currently working with the University of Maryland to research decision-making and food choice in young adults in the United States of America.

The research team is recruiting approximately twenty students aged 18-24 years to participate in focus groups discussing lunch in the South Campus dining hall. The purpose is to discuss the foods students choose to eat at the dining hall and particularly, what students find appealing about choosing those foods. The focus group will take approximately 75-minutes. Each participant is welcome to dine in the dining hall after the focus group, at no charge. Interested students must email patricia.powell@uqconnect.edu.au with their intent to attend so that they can ensure they have the right number of participants for each session (sessions without confirmed participants will be rescheduled). They are offering sessions on the following dates:

Friends of the Earth Pollinators and Pesticides Internship

Friends of The Earth is seeking to hire a talented and dedicated intern to help support Friends of the Earth’s BeeAction campaign. b) has a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher
c) has been enrolled in an AGNR major for at least two semesters 
d) is currently enrolled as a full-time undergraduate student in AGNR 
e) will not be graduating prior to May 2021
f) Is currently and actively engaged in one or more aspects of university life (study abroad, research, internships, organizations, athletics, etc)
