Living Canopies Paid On-Campus Internship

Living Canopies is searching for a dedicated intern to assist with light manufacturing and packaging of its Living Umbrellas(tm) for retail sales. Living Canopies is a UMD-based Startup company located on the College Park campus in the Patapsco Bldg. The Living Umbrella is a reimagination of the patio umbrella as a canopy of beautiful flowering plants with an automated irrigation system. Dr. David Tilley and his students in ENST invented the Living Umbrella, which is patent pending. 

Applicants should be comfortable using their hands, lifting 30 lbs, using hand tools such as screwdrivers and wrenches, and being meticulous. Applicants must be able to work on Saturday or Sunday for a minimum of 4 hours. Applicants must be dependable and have a desire to learn about environmental entrepreneurship.

Duties will include:
  • Unpacking umbrellas
  • Disassembling umbrellas
  • Machining 
  • Repackaging
  • Shipping and receiving
  • Writing assembly instructions
While this position is through the ENST division, students of all majors are welcome to apply. The salary level is $12/hour with the expectation that the intern will work approximately 8 hours/week for 10 weeks. The internship will be part-time during the Spring/Fall semester, with a desired Spring start date of February 29th. Interested applicants can send a resume and cover letter to dtilley@umd.edu
