POTOMAC CONSERVANCY: COMMUNITY CONSERVATION MANAGER

As the region’s leading clean water advocate, we shape the broader effort to ensure the Potomac River boasts clean drinking water, healthy lands, and connected communities. You will be joining a small but mighty team who work every day to fight for clean water through building a local inclusive movement of impassioned river advocates.

Community Conservation Manager: The Community Conservation Manager is responsible for the creation  and nourishment of community driven volunteer teams that leverage hands-on stewardship and outreach to inspire clean water action, which addresses root causes of pollution through civic engagement and advocacy. Working in the larger DC Metro area, our clean water advocacy efforts are informed by communities, our Policy team, and our Clean Potomac Plan. The Manager will interpret a broad strategic vision for community action in a local context, requiring the ability to listen to community needs and enact change.

To support this objective in the first year, the Manager will also supervise our Chesapeake Conservation Corps Member, who will help execute socially distant stewardship events this fall along with newly trained Volunteer Leaders and our expansion of our Growing Native programs, organize summer recreation events in 2021, and plan and lead 6-10 private events for sponsors annually (health conditions permitting). In the out years, workplans will be dependent upon new ideas coming from the Manager, community needs, and organizational priorities.

Qualifications
• Strong belief in the power of collection action and collective liberation to effect change.
• Proven track record of volunteer management or grassroots organizing, either professionally or on a volunteer basis.
• Proven track record of building trust with people from varying backgrounds and beliefs.
• Interest in Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Justice a must; experience is preferred.
• Ability to manage multiple deadlines and requests simultaneously; strong project management skills required.
• Ability to make independent decisions when necessary
• Experience making data-driven decisions and understanding the importance of data management
to achieve campaign success.
• Experience with communities in the Potomac Watershed preferred but not required.
• Ability to work evenings and weekends and travel across the watershed as needed.
• Access to a valid driver’s license and either access to reliable transportation or ability to rent a car required

Location, Schedule, and Travel: While this position normally works out of Potomac Conservancy’s
headquarters in downtown Silver Spring, Maryland, our staff is now working remotely because of the
COVID-19 pandemic. Reports to the Senior Director of Community Conservation. This position will require significant evening and weekend work but will offer flexibility to maintain a healthy work life balance. Significant travel around the Potomac watershed is required.

Latest Available Start Date: October 1, 2020

Salary and Benefits: This is a full-time position (40 hours per week, inclusive of travel time) with a firm annual compensation range of $40,000 to $45,000 per year. Benefits include medical and dental
coverage; 18 days paid time off and 10 holidays per year; 401b matching and flex spending accounts;

directors.

SBB Research Group STEM Scholarship

About the SBB Research Group STEM Scholarship

The SBB Research Group STEM Scholarship encourages and empowers students to create significant value and countless new opportunities for society through their pursuit of higher learning, especially through interdisciplinary combinations of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). To apply for this $5,000 scholarship, eligible students must submit a short 500-word essay. See additional details below.

Eligibility

To apply for this scholarship students must meet the following criteria:

·  Available to all currently enrolled full-time students.

·  Students pursuing a degree in one of the following fields: Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM).

·  Students must have a minimum GPA of 3.5.

·  SBB Research Group’s interns and their family members are eligible and encouraged to apply. However, immediate family members of SBB Research Group’s regular employees are not eligible to apply.

Guidelines

SBB Research Group wants to read your response to the question, “What have been your most significant experiences in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) and how will you use STEM principles to improve the world?" This should be a short essay (500 words or less).

Winner Selection

The SBB Research Group STEM Scholarship Committee (the “Committee”) will award one (1) $5,000 scholarship via the following process:

1.The Committee will select the eligible candidate with the best submission, in its sole and absolute discretion, in September 2020.

2.Once notified by email, a candidate will have two (2) weeks to accept the award. Failure to accept the award within two (2) weeks shall disqualify that candidate, and the Committee will select a new candidate by repeating the previous steps.

3.Acceptance of the award may have additional requirements set by the Committee and/or the student’s college, university, trade school, or design school. The Committee reserves the right to request further information from you, including but not limited to documentation in support of the information you provide.

Job Title:  Maintenance Technician

Job Summary: 
The Maintenance Technician will work in the Grounds Operations unit for the daily maintenance of a 161-acre site.

Immediate Responsibilities:
Management and maintenance of landscaping, environmental, horticultural, snow & ice management, outdoor signage, outdoor painting, parking lot maintenance, ball field maintenance, landscaping equipment upkeep and other assigned duties as may be needed from time to time.

Additional Duties:
Support and operational updates to the customer along with managing projects for the customer and providing status of those projects. The responsibilities are to ensure maximum operational success while working with other maintenance personnel to ensure duties are completed safely, effectively and properly documented within OSHA and internal standards. Develop strategies to improve overall reliability and safety of facility, personnel and processes. Manage / respond to breakdowns, emergency calls and oversee time-critical repairs 24/7. Plan and oversee routine maintenance and improvement projects for facility and equipment. Promote preventative and predictive maintenance program effectively utilizing the CMMS. This position assumes overall responsibility for grounds management and operations of the campus and for multiple clients.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 
·       Organizes work load to manage normal day-to-day activities, based on season and predicted weather. Prioritize emergency assignments and special projects (both Company and Customer) to ensure all Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s) and performance objectives are completed to satisfaction. Provide weekly, monthly and quarterly performance reports
·       Performs maintenance of landscaping, environmental, horticultural, snow & ice management, outdoor signage, outdoor painting, parking lot maintenance, ball field maintenance, landscaping equipment upkeep
·       Promote commitment to environmental health and safety by adhering to safety practices, investigating concerns and making recommendations
·       Communicates effectively with Client Site Manager to determine service needs. Coordinates and works closely with client sub-contractors who are forming service on site
·       Investigates, develop and implement projects, processes or activities to reduce or contain costs, increase quality levels and meet standards. Utilize technical competency, relevant work experience and comprehensive / diverse facilities engineering knowledge to generate creative solutions
·       Fosters a positive work environment with associates and customer. For associates, train, mentor, manage the review process and engage in associate development. For customer, develop and maintain a positive relationship that supports open dialogue

Qualifications: 
·       GED or equivalent. Landscape management, gardening or agricultural degree preferred. Master Gardening certification is an alternate preference
·       -6 years of progressive experience in landscaping operations at a large facility or for a supplier providing services to larger facilities and clients
·       Must be a U.S. citizen or resident alien with valid U.S. driver’s license and dependable form of transportation. OSHA 10-hour and / or 30-hour card helpful but not required
·       Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to speak effectively to customers or associates of the organization. Should possess excellent verbal and written skills
·       Ability to perform landscaping and various general type maintenance tasks. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence utilizing basic computer skills and ability to communicate effectively via email and internet use
·       Experience in landscaping operations and grounds management
·       Experience with painting, small engine repair, light plumbing and mechanical
·       Microsoft Office experience: Excel, Outlook, Word
·       Organization skills to maintain the client facility maintenance records and reports
·       On-call to help maintain a 24x7 operations of all critical building support systems (HVAC, Electrical, Power Plant support, etc),
·       Excellent customer service and communication skills. Consistent demonstration of the ability to proactively identify potential problems or opportunities, analyze issues using all appropriate resources, develop alternatives and arrive at the optimum approach to mitigate problems or exploit opportunities
