Leadership Studies Program

Have you considered completing a minor or certificate in Leadership Studies? Get ready for this semester’s application process! The Leadership Studies program is a transdisciplinary academic program offering both minor and certificate options. Any undergraduate student regardless of major or home college is welcome to apply. Leadership Studies students represent every academic college at the University of Maryland! Their program promotes undergraduate student leadership development by educating students for and about leadership in a complex world. They aim to prepare students to effectively engage in leadership in both formal and informal ways within campus, local, national, and global contexts.

As a part of this program, students explore leadership theory and practice from a variety of social, historic, and disciplinary lenses and are challenged to think about leadership critically and broadly, beyond dominant narratives of position and authority. Students are also encouraged to identify a working philosophy of leadership that can advance their thinking around ethics, civic engagement, and the importance of working within diverse and multicultural environments. Beyond the classroom, students can use their knowledge, skills, and competencies gained from this academic program to enhance their sense of self and engagement with others, as well as their practice within their major discipline, future career, and ongoing engagement with communities and organizations.

Students who are currently enrolled in or have already completed HESI 217 "Introduction to Student Leadership" are eligible to apply to the Leadership Studies Program. The application is available online now. Applications will be reviewed and students will be notified on a rolling basis between now and November 13. Students are encouraged to apply early so they can receive notification of application acceptance prior to spring course scheduling.

Haven’t taken HESI 217 yet? Enroll in a fully online section this winter term! More information about the program can be found at go.umd.edu/leadershipstudies. Feel free to contact leadershipstudies@umd.edu with any questions.

FAO Webinar- The Power of Youth for Agricultural Transformation: A View from Sub-Saharan Africa

Sub-Saharan Africa is home to almost one billion people, and the majority of them are young. Today, more than 60 percent of Africans are under the age of 25. By 2050, the population of the region is expected to double, and half will be under 18.

Without proper interventions, this rapid population growth will magnify the strains on the agriculture landscape and food system. However, the intellectual and creative capital that Africa’s youth possess, can be unleashed to achieve the region’s agricultural development goals, and corresponding benefits of food and nutrition security, educational outcomes and health and economic development.

To deliver on this vision, improved farming methods and innovations must be accessible to and adopted by farmers. Youth, as change agents, can be the catalyst for increased uptake of best practices and innovations, and enable widespread agricultural transformation.

Join FAO North America, Alliance to End Hunger and Humanitas Global for a webinar that will bring global and frontline perspectives of agricultural engagement where youth learn, thrive and achieve. Our distinguished keynote speaker and panelists will address the need to mobilize and activate school-aged youth for agricultural development and innovation uptake. They will also share experiences in building youth-centered agricultural pathways at school and within the very communities where youth deploy their learnings for immediate impact.

Graduate School Programs at Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science

Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science (RSMAS) at the University of Miami is now accepting applications for the Spring and Fall 2021 semesters for the following degrees: PhD (fully funded), Master of Science (MS), and Master of Professional Science (MPS). At RSMAS, PhD students are supported as Graduate Research Assistants during their tenure (typically 5 years). These assistantships provide an annual salary of $30,312 (USD), and tuition and health insurance are provided. A list of PhD Assistantships are available here: https://graduate.rsmas.miami.edu/admissions/phd-assistanships/index.html. More assistantships will post to this site on a weekly basis; therefore, we encourage you to review this site regularly and contact faculty directly. Please be advised, select faculty do not list their assistantships online, and instead, only consider individuals who submitted an application for an assistantship with their lab/office. To increase your chances for an assistantship, apply by December 1, 2020. Fall 2021 applications received prior to January 1, 2021 will be reviewed. The GRE has been waived for all PhD, MS, and MPS programs.

MPS students enroll in the same courses as PhD and MS students, and patriciate in an internship and/or research in the field in lieu of a traditional thesis/dissertation which is required for MS/PhD students. Past MPS students engaged in internships with host organizations such as NOAA, the National Park Service, and U.S. and international NGOs to name a few. For the MPS program, 94% of graduates secure employment in their field within 6 months of receiving their degree. MPS degree has rolling admission until June for international applicants and July for U.S. citizens and permanent residents. PhD/MS applicants who want to be considered for the MPS program in addition to PhD or MS, can do so at no extra cost by checking the box for “Master of Professional Science” on the application form.  This allows an individual to apply for multiple graduate programs at RSMAS for one application fee. A partial-tuition waiver (merit-based waiver) will be considered for applicants who meet our GPA-only or GRE + GPA criteria. The MPS program has 14 tracks (area of concentration) below:

This scholarship provides high-achieving students from historically underserved or underrepresented populations, and/or socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds, to earn a master’s degree from the Rosenstiel School at no cost or significantly reduced tuition cost (student fees still apply). Each scholarship consists of 24 credits and allows recipients to earn an additional 6 credits (maximum) through the MPS program’s merit-based waiver. Completion of 30-credits total is required for master’s degree at UM; therefore, scholarship recipients are eligible to complete the MPS program at no or significantly reduced tuition cost: scholarship + waiver (the latter if eligible). Scholarship recipients will be notified in March of 2021 for Fall 2021 start.
