The International Plant Propagators Society (IPPS) Eastern Region offers scholarships for qualifying students to cover registration costs for our Annual Conferences. Students may apply for a scholarship to attend for 1,2,3 or all 4 days of the event.

The annual conference is a fantastic opportunity to network and build invaluable relationships with the best in the business from across the country. The four day conference consists of behind-the-scenes-tours to local nurseries and botanic gardens as well as an educational session of thought-provoking talks by industry experts and business professionals. A poster session, plant auctions and time to socialize round out the event.

A generous number of student scholarships are available. The estimated value of the scholarships varies from $75 to $500 depending on the length of attendance. This is not
a cash award but a complimentary registration. Students are responsible for their own travel and overnight accommodations. [Meredith's note: you can apply for IAA Enhancement Funds to cover these costs!]

• Candidate must be enrolled in a horticulture or other plant-related program of study and be an active student at the time of the conference.

Gardener at Washington National Cathedral

Serves as the horticulturist/gardener providing skilled gardening assistance to the zone

gardeners on the grounds of the Washington National Cathedral. This horticulturist

rotates through the garden zones as needed, helping to maintain and care for ornamental

beds, trees, and shrubs, as well as the overall appearance of zones.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Consults with Horticulture Director and zone gardeners to determine the most

pressing gardening needs on the Close, then concentrates on assisting the zone

gardener to meet the identified needs.

2. Maintains ornamental beds by mulching, weeding, raking, and pruning plants.

3. Recognizes and reports pests and diseases.

4. Recognizes and reports problems such as wilting, leaf scorch, or nutrient deficiencies.

5. Recognizes and responds to water demands of plant material.

6. Operates all equipment and tools safely and properly.

7. Follows proper techniques of soil preparation, plant installation, and pesticide

application.

8. Keeps hardscapes in area blown, edged, and cleaned. Keeps drains and catch basins

clear.

9. Empties trash cans in assigned area on a regular basis & picks up litter.

10. Shovels snow, spreads sand and salt, and safely operates snow removal equipment.

11. Identifies planting areas that could be improved and shares ideas with the zone

gardener and Director of Horticulture.

12. Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

1. One-year experience in public gardening including landscape and grounds maintenance

and/or degree in horticulture or related field preferred.

2. Must possess a valid driver’s license and good driving record, and be capable of

operating vehicles safely.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES

1. Knowledge of plant materials, proper maintenance techniques, and horticultural

practices.

2. Understanding of Integrated Pest Management techniques.

3. Ability to plan a project & follow through to completion, including cleanup.

4. Ability to work amicably within a diverse and multicultural workforce.

5. Ability to work as part of a team.

6. Ability to self-direct and work alone with little to no supervision.

7. Ability to operate all types of grounds maintenance equipment such as mowers, power

sweepers, sprayers, blowers, trimmers, aerators, and tillers, safely.

8. Good interpersonal, communication, and literacy skills

9. Basic computer skills required

WORKING CONDITIONS:

1. Normal schedule is Monday -- Friday, 6:30 am – 3:00 pm. Must have flexible schedule

to accommodate weather and special projects.

2. Must be able to work required overtime, often with little notice (snow removal, storm

damage). Scheduled overtime includes annual events.

3. Must be able to work outside in inclement weather including extreme cold and heat,

high winds, rain, and snow.

4. Must be able to perform physical work including bending, stooping and reaching. Must

be able to work on feet for extended periods of time and to lift, carry, and push at least

30 lbs.

Greenhouse & Nursery Manager - Lewisburg, WV Job Oppritunity

 Position: Greenhouse and Nursery Manager

Organization: Appalachian Headwaters

Location: Lewisburg, West Virginia

Position Overview:

Appalachian Headwaters is a nonprofit organization focused on restoration of native ecosystems and environmental education in central Appalachia. We have two sites, each with a green house and a shade house. These sites also include hundreds of acres of open growing space. These sites include (1) a 100-acre park and environmental center, and (2) a 100-acre camp property. We also have an experienced grounds crew and grounds crew manager. The Greenhouse and Nursery Manager will help guide Headwaters’ native plant horticulture program, directing the plants we grow and how we care for them.

Headwaters started its native plant nursery in 2018 to grow native plants and seeds for its mined land restoration, environmental education, and pollinator gardens. Planting nursery stock from seed collected from central Appalachia will contribute to success of our projects.

The Greenhouse and Nursery Manager will be responsible for:

• managing the plant production at our sites,
• planting and maintaining plants at educational and restoration sites,
• working with nursery program staff,
• plant propagation and care,
• helping direct grounds maintenance and invasive species removal at Headwaters’ properties,
• some community education programs,
• other activities that fit the staff’s talents and organizational needs.

Preferred Qualifications:

• A bachelors’ degree, master’s degree, or comparable experience in Horticulture, Agronomy, greenhouse management, or a related field;
• Experience in a greenhouse (required);
• At least two years’ experience in nursery work and horticulture;
• Knowledge of native plant horticulture;
• Compatible with our program mission, including a dedication to environmental protection, organic plant growing and restoration of native ecosystems;

 

Compensation: Full time salaried position with excellent benefits including up to 10% retirement match and fully paid medical insurance.

Deep Roots Farm is a regenerative ''O'', women owned and operated farm located in Brandywine and Upper Marlboro, MD.  We grow vegetables, herbs, fruit, and flowers, and raise chickens on 50 acres for our community. 

We are currently hiring for a Market Manager/CSA & Events Coordinator and 2022 Field Crew. 

Market Manager/CSA & Events Coordinator

As the market manager you will be expected to:

Attend 3 markets weekly: Dupont Circle on Sunday – market starts at 8:30 am ends 1:30pm from first week in March to end of December / H ST NE on Saturday – market starts 9am ends 12:30pm from first week in April to Mid-December/ Watkins Farmstand on Wednesday starts 3pm ends 7pm from first week in June to last week in October. 

Manage the support team at market 

Provide exceptional customer service to our supporters and other vendors/market support staff

Pick up the market van by 6am on Saturday and Sunday, 1pm on Wednesday

Load and unload produce and market supplies at the farm and market

Setup/manage workflow and cash/credit card transactions

Update inventory log at end of each market

Update sales report after each market when you get back to the farm

CSA - weekly update to members

Responding to emails and phone calls

Events – marketing via IG and websites, coordinating all materials needed with vendors and Farmer

Other task as needed to ensure the adequate completion of all assignments

2022 Field Crew (Full -Time & Part Time)

Looking for highly self-motivated individuals to join our field crew. 

Responsibilities include: transplanting, harvesting, seeding, irrigating, cultivating, operating machinery, trellising and more. Must be able to work in all weather conditions outdoors and in a greenhouse. A positive attitude goes a long way, ability to manage time and be consistently organized, follow directions and think critically in all situations. Assist with daily poultry chores, including coop maintenance, pasture management, egg collection and other livestock tasks. Help with CSA packing, and distribution of shares, following all food safety standards and ensuring food quality. 

Must be able to comfortably lift and move 50lbs. A valid driver's license with a clean driving record. Must be authorized to work in the U.S.

Season: 

Our farm produces vegetables year-round. This position is full time (40-50 hrs/weekly) from Mid - March to Mid-December. There is an option to work year-round. 

Compensation: 

Will be determined based on relevant experience, team members that commit to the full season will receive 40 hrs of paid time off and a weekly Small CSA vegetable share.

Moutoux Orchard Position Openings

Moutoux Orchard is a third generation family farm business. It is a diversified farm and you will be exposed to all aspects of production. Field vegetable production is the primary focus of the work—seeding, transplanting, weeding, harvesting, mulching, foliar spraying, etc. They grow all of their own seedlings and grow in hoop houses for winter production. 

You will participate in harvest and on-farm CSA distribution twice weekly. Workers will also do livestock chores approximately 2-4 days/week, including feeding and watering livestock, moving animals to new pasture, building livestock fence, and maintaining the brooder. You will also participate in processing chickens. Other responsibilities of the position include daily egg collection, dairy processing (yogurt, cheese, kefir), and some CSA outreach. They have 1 open position as part of the milking team for our small herd of Jersey cows. There will be minimal orchard work—thinning, pruning, and picking.

Educational Opportunities: This is a working position (not an internship). This means they learn through working. Pay attention, be observant, ask questions. You will play an integral role in production and management of a very diverse CSA, and this in and of itself should serve as a great educational opportunity. They are organizers and active members of the Chesapeake CRAFT Network, and workers are encouraged to attend CRAFT events throughout the season.

Skills Desired: They are looking for a positive and cooperative attitude and a team-oriented outlook. Their fast-paced team demands good communication skills, being well organized, and reliability. Good kindergarten skills are essential- sharing, trust, understanding, forgiveness. Productivity, speed, and alertness are very important, but only on top of the foundation of a good attitude. Ability to pick up on tasks quickly is important. And lastly, a love of good food and pride in good work is essential. They are committed to working toward a more ethical, racially just, equitable society. They encourage women, LGBTQ, non-binary and people of color to apply.

Meals: They often share weekly staff/family dinner, but not required.

Stipend: $1200/month, plus comfortable housing, utilities, and free choice of farm food (including raw milk and yogurt, beef, pork, chicken, seasonal vegetables and fruit, eggs, variety of flours and herbs). Stipend increase for workers who stay on for 2nd and 3rd year.

Housing: Comfortable year round housing on farm is provided, shared with other farmhands.

National Milk Producers Federation - Sustainability Initiatives Coordinator

SUSTAINABILITY INITIATIVES COORDINATOR

ROLE SUMMARY

The Sustainability Initiatives Coordinator will support the environmental and labor components of the National Dairy Farmers Assuring Responsible Management (FARM) Program – FARM Environmental Stewardship (ES) and FARM Workforce Development (WFD). The Coordinator will perform a variety of administrative tasks, program management, writing, and desktop research to support successful program development and implementation. The ideal candidate has a strong interest in the dairy industry, environmental issues, and/or on-farm human resources and safety topics.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Support creation of fact sheets and other communications materials in collaboration with other team members. Develop processes to ensure these materials stay up to date
• Support development of producer and evaluator resources that help dairy farmers learn about and implement best practices related to environmental and human resources/safety topics
• Conduct research and summarize findings to inform development of FARM ES and WFD programs
• Manage initial onboarding of organizations into FARM ES and WFD and respond to questions about the programs from 2nd-party evaluators, participating organizations, and other relevant stakeholders
• Perform administrative and operational tasks to ensure successful execution of environmental and labor programs, including taking notes during meetings, crafting minutes, and other related duties as required

QUALIFICATIONS

• Excellent interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to work as part of a team
• Demonstrated time-management skills and ability to prioritize work in an environment with multiple and competing interests

• Must be in good judicial and academic standing (at least a cumulative GPA of 2.75)
• Completion of at least 1 semester in an AGNR major by January 2021
• Commitment of 5-10 hours each semester for at least 1 full academic year to the AGNR Ambassadors
• A general understanding of the college admissions and application process.
