IAA and AGNR Peer Mentor

Are you interested in being a peer mentor? Are you in, or graduated from the IAA? Consider working for the college and for IAA!

Title: Peer Mentor (specifically for the support of IAA students)

Location: AGNR Office of Academic Programs (Symons Hall) and the Institute of Applied Agriculture (Jull Hall)

Responsibilities:

Peer Mentors (PMs) meet with AGNR students by way of drop-in or scheduled appointments, during which they:

❖ Assist with the preparation of 2- and 4-year academic plans and explain degree/benchmark progress

❖ Familiarize others with registration procedures and resources (Testudo, Venus, etc)

❖ Assist in advising appointment planning such as building tentative schedules, pre-selecting courses,

reviewing academic audits, exploring changing majors or adding additional major(s)/minor(s)

❖ Help students understand and navigate campus/college policies (e.g. transfer credit processes,

requests for exceptions, major changes, scholarship opportunities, math eligibility, GenEds, etc)

❖ Guide students to various campus resources and/or services as needed (e.g. career services, counseling services, learning assistance services, etc).

When not assisting students, PMs will assist the AGNR Academic Programs Office to complete other tasks associated with student services and support. This includes but is not limited to data management, record filing, event planning, mailing, and greeting other staff/faculty/visitors to the office. Other duties unique to the IAA Peer Mentor:

❖ Assist students with IAA-to-UMD transfer process

❖ Assist with IAA Internship process

❖ Host IAA student Q&A & “advising” sessions when appropriate

❖ Connect IAA students to campus engagement opportunities

❖ Assist with New Student Orientation (pending availability)

Minimum Qualifications:

● Currently enrolled as a full-time undergraduate student in an AGNR major

○ Note: ENSP applicants must be pursuing a concentration within AGNR

● Will have completed two semesters within the IAA by the end of December 2023

○ Preferred: Already completed AgForward or IAA-to-UMD transfer process

● Will have completed 24+ cumulative credits by the end of December 2023

● Currently has a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher (2.7 or higher may be considered)

● Will not be graduating with their BS/BLA prior to December 2024

○ Preferred: Will not be graduating with BS/BLA prior to May 2025

● Preferred: Demonstrated extracurricular involvement within IAA, AGNR, and/or UMD

Commitment & Compensation:

Peer Mentors commit to a minimum of 4 work hours per week (preferrably two 2-hour shifts). If possibly, the IAA PM will spend one weekly shift in Symons Hall and the other in Jull Hall. Additional shifts or hours may be discussed as needed. Peer Mentors are paid $15.00 hourly (UMD’s current minimum wage for students).

This position will remain open until filled. The new hire will begin their onboarding at the start of the Spring 2024 semester. Contracts are reviewed annually and may be renewed for additional years (Aug to May) moving forward.

Glynwood Center Livestock & Vegetable Apprenticeships - Clear Spring, NY

 Glynwood is thrilled to be recruiting livestock and vegetable apprentices for the 2023 season. Information about each apprenticeship is included below. You can refer people to our website to view full postings and to apply. 

Livestock Apprenticeship 

Glynwood seeks two apprentices to assist in all aspects of production for our multi-species livestock operation. Glynwood pastures cattle, sheep, hogs and poultry. Work includes day-to-day care of the animals as well as monitoring breeding, birthing, caring for sick or injured animals, and pasture management. The livestock apprentice positions are ten months, from March to December. Some livestock farming experience is required. Compensation includes a private room in on-site shared apprentice housing, a $650 weekly stipend, and $400 in a Healthcare Reimbursement Account.

Vegetable Apprenticeship

Glynwood seeks three apprentices to assist in all aspects of production for our 6 acres of vegetables. Work includes greenhouse management, cover cropping, irrigation, tractor field work, fertility management, harvesting, post-harvest handling, staffing CSA distribution and farm store, record keeping, season extension, pest and disease control, weed management, and composting. The vegetable apprentice positions are 9 months, from mid-March to mid-December. One season of experience on a farm is required. Compensation includes a private room in on-site shared apprentice housing, a $650 weekly stipend, and $400 in a Healthcare Reimbursement Account.

Hudson Valley Apprenticeship

The Hudson Valley Apprenticeship (HVA) is a decentralized apprenticeship program, with farms in Columbia, Dutchess, Orange, Putnam, and Ulster counties serving as farm mentors. Apprentices will have the opportunity to gain a solid foundation in the principles and practices of sustainable vegetable production through a combination of hands-on learning, in-field mentoring, and classroom-based education. Compensation is minimum wage or higher for field work, with hourly compensation of $20/hour for classroom trainings. Some participating farms provide housing.

The Ridgewood Country Club Student Interns

 

The Ridgewood Country Club is seeking student interns for the 2023 golf season. We are a 27-hole A.W. Tillinghast designed club located in northeast New Jersey, just twenty minutes from New York City. The golf course is set on two hundred and forty-five acres, has a thirty-eight-person maintenance staff and will have an operating budget of $3,600,000 in 2023. We have hosted several national professional tournaments including the Ryder Cup and Fed Ex Cup events and are ranked as one of the top 100 courses in the United States. This past season, RCC hosted its second U.S. Amateur won by Sam Bennett.

 

While interning at RCC, the student will have the opportunity to share his experiences with seven other people who are devoted to golf course management. Beside myself, we have four assistant superintendents and three student interns. There will be regular turf discussions, seminars, field trips to various industry sites in the Met area and tournament volunteer opportunities.

 

We have a long history of hiring our assistants from our intern pool and each student will be evaluated for such a position and possibly offered a job at the end of their stay.

 

We are looking for students who could work through at least early to mid-August. Any student wishing to take off a semester and experience the maintenance process from the first day of spring cleanup, through the summer and even later, would certainly be encouraged to do so.

How do I know which scholarship is right for me?



Each of the GCA’s 29 merit-based scholarships has its own page of information, including a description, eligibility qualifications, award amounts, special considerations, due dates, and links to each scholarship application. 

GCA scholarships are organized by area of study. Clicking on an area of study will display a drop-down menu listing the particular scholarships, fellowships, and/or awards under that area of study. 

Interested scholars should review the offerings to find the right one for their interests. School advisors may be able to help.

How many scholarships can I apply for?

Applicants may apply to only one scholarship, fellowship, or award per year. 

Are there eligibility requirements?

GCA scholarships are open to U.S. citizens or permanent residents who are enrolled at a U.S.- based institution. (Exception: The Rome Prize Fellowship and The GCA/RHS Interchange Fellowship are open to U.S. citizens only).

Each scholarship has its own additional eligibility requirements pertaining to academic level and area of interest. Please review the scholarship pages in which you are interested for complete details. It is up to the applicant to determine for which scholarships they are eligible.

What are the deadlines?

Each scholarship, fellowship, or award has its own application deadline. The GCA does not grant exceptions. Applicants must ensure that all required materials are submitted by the specified due date.

When will I be notified if I am awarded a scholarship?

Applicants will be notified via email in early to mid-March whether or not they have received a scholarship. At that time, an agreement form will be sent to those who have received a scholarship, which must be completed electronically by April 1. Awards are distributed at the end of April. 

What else should I know?

Some applications will be made directly to GCA Headquarters, where they will be reviewed by the GCA Scholarship Committee.

Other applications will be sent to collaborating institutions, where a selection committee of experts in the field will review the applications. Their recommendations are then sent to the GCA Scholarship Committee for final approval.

About the Mona Center Urban Farm

The Catholic Charities – Susan Denison Mona Center is an integrated multi-services facility that provides critical resources to the residents of Prince George’s County. In partnership with the University of Maryland and Luminis Healthcare (formerly Doctors Community Hospital), Catholic Charities offers comprehensive services focusing on health and wellness, feeding and nutrition, and legal services.

 

The urban farm was created on-site to facilitate community engagement and grow fresh produce for the residents of the neighborhood. The farm was started in 2019 and now consists of a pilot project of eighteen raised beds for vegetable production. With proven success, the project hopes to grow to occupy the full 1/3 acre of land available. 100% of the farm’s produce currently goes to the Catholic Charities Enterprise Kitchen, which prepares it into hot meals that are distributed for free to food-insecure residents in Washington, DC and Montgomery and Prince George’s Counties. As the farm and its outputs grow, the vegetables and herbs may be used in Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) and ProduceRx programs run by the Mona Center.

 

Position Description

The Urban Farm Coordinators work as a team of two to oversee day-to-day operations of the farm, including infrastructure planning, crop production, marketing, outreach, and educational programming. The Coordinators collaborate with Catholic Charities staff, Luminis Healthcare staff, and University of Maryland faculty advisors to bring farm projects and community events to fruition. The work may be divided as the Coordinators find appropriate; for example, one Coordinator may work primarily remotely on marketing, grant writing, and other tasks, while the other Coordinator is primarily responsible for on-site farm production and volunteer events. These are paid positions that may also be used to fulfill an academic internship requirement.

Capital Area Food Bank Garden Fellow Position

Capital Area Food Bank is currently hiring for a garden fellow. This position will provide the fellow with the opportunity to gain a strong understanding of the issues surrounding food insecurity in the DMV Area. While working with our nutrition education team, he/she will get an in-depth look into various programs and approaches that are being deployed directly by the Food Bank and indirectly through food assistance organizations to address the issue of food insecurity both in the short and longer term. Fellows are a vital part of the Capital Area Food Bank.

The Garden Fellow will work closely with the Food Growing Education Specialist to develop and implement several food growing and gardening initiatives in our ½ acre garden, Urban Food Studio’s outdoor kitchen, and in the community. The fellow will also support the Food Growing Education Specialist with administrative tasks related to our partners and clients.

USDA Foreign Agricultural Service FAS Diversity Fellowship Program

Philadelphia Society for Promoting Agriculture Scholarship

This annual award is designed to recognize outstanding students majoring in Horticulture or related fields who have a clear intent upon graduation from an undergraduate university of either pursuing a career in one the many branches of horticulture including enhancement of the environment, or of attending graduate school in one of these areas.

Amount of Award: The award will be in the amount of $1,500 and paid direct to the two selected individuals by September 1st 2022.

Eligibility: This award shall be presented to a full-time student in horticulture in their Junior or Senior year, in good academic standing with a GPA of 3.0 or better. Applicants must either live in DE, MD, NJ, or PA or go to a school in one of those four states in the PSPA service area. Students must be interested in employment in the horticulture industry or in furthering their education in horticulture or related fields. (Previous scholarship winners are ineligible to apply)

Requirement: As part of the application process, a one-page essay must be submitted that focuses on how you envision impacting the industry through your employment or graduate work in horticulture. Paid Student Summer Internship with UMD Department of Entomology

The University of Maryland Department of Entomology is seeking some motivated undergraduates with an interest in Biological Control, Field Agro-ecology and helping food insecure individuals to join the ecological pest management and applied ecology group for summer paid internship positions. Research prospects will include using cover crops and flowering plants to manipulate beneficial arthropods and suppress insect and weed pests in vegetable plantings. Work will consist also of research plot maintenance, arthropod and plant surveys, produce harvesting and donating fresh produce to organizations that help feed food insecure community members.

Strong commitment to field work and a desire to work as a team and help the less fortunate and remove weeds from research plots are essential as the job entails outside manual activities during the summer months. The ideal candidate will have some interest in field research, the great outdoors and have a valid driver license. 1) Joint Agro-Ecology Field and Science Communications Internship Opportunity
"We seek two students for a summer internship that offers a hybrid of scientific research and outreach and communications. The ideal candidates have strong writing and communications skills coupled with knowledge in environmental science and an interest in agricultural landscapes. This internship is funded through a National Fish and Wildlife Foundation Small Watershed Grant to explore how to restore agricultural fields that have been damaged by saltwater intrusion and sea-level rise to vibrant, thriving marshes full of healthy plants and animal species. It is being held in partnership with Agroecology Lab at the University of Maryland."

2) Thriving Agriculture Systems in Urbanized Landscapes Internship
"We seek undergraduate student applicants interested in working as an intern on a project that will require extensive research related to agriculture, urbanization, land use, food systems, and policies in Maryland over a twenty-year period. This internship is part of a five-year $9 million project, “Thriving Agricultural Systems in Urbanized Landscapes” funded by USDA’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA.) The student selected for this internship will work closely with interns at Penn State and Virginia Tech who are also working on the project."

Urban Forester Position at Casey Trees

The Urban Forester 1 (UF1) is responsible for the management and smooth execution of Casey Trees’ tree planting programs on both public and private lands. This incumbent fields and schedules tree planting and related consultations on a year-round basis with property owners and others, responds to referrals from local government, industry partners and others. The Urban Forester also coordinates spring, fall and winter tree plantings to flow seamlessly with other tree planting activities and events. Maryland Nursery, Landscape, and Greenhouse Association Scholarship

The Maryland Nursery, Landscape, and Greenhouse Association has announced the availability of several scholarships for college-aged horticulture students. The MNLGA Ornamental Horticulture Scholarship will award three $5,000 scholarships for eligible students in ornamental horticulture and landscape programs.
