We are nearly two months away from the application deadline (September 30, 2025). You do not need to commit to joining the program when submitting an application. See information and the link to apply here and via the QR code in the flyer. 

We are also happy to share three main scholarship sources that can reduce the cost of our 9-day study abroad course and guided experience in Brazil over UMD's spring break:

• UMD Education Abroad scholarships: Students can be awarded up to $1500 
• AGNR Study Abroad scholarship: Our College also awards $500 to support studying in Brazil  
• Gilman Scholarship: This is a national scholarship from the State Department that students can apply for. Awards vary but can be up to $5000. 
• Related to this, UMD offers the Gilman Guarantee. If students apply for the Gilman scholarship through UMD's National Scholarship Office, they will get $500 guaranteed (regardless of if they receive a Gilman award or not). If they end up not receiving a Gilman award, they still keep that $500, and UMD will award them an additional $2000 (for a total scholarship of $2500). If they do get a Gilman award, then they still keep that initial $500, and they receive whatever amount Gilman decides to award them. 

Note that out-of-pocket costs in the portal are estimated and will not be billed for the program and all costs in the portal are before applying any scholarship support. Also, note that speaking Portuguese is not required.

Study Abroad Brazil - Summer 2025 Virtual Info Session, Dec 12, 6PM

We would like to invite you to join our second info session and Q&A on ZOOM, Thursday Dec 12 at 6PM, for our new study abroad course (AGST/ANSC470) to Brazil. This exciting course will include 17 guided days throughout Brazil starting at the end of May 2025. In the session — in addition to the itinerary — we will cover costs, scholarship support, and the application process. 

The course is open to undergraduate and graduate students who will engage collaboratively with Brazilian students and stakeholders to evaluate and analyze agri-food value chains — from production/cultivation, to processing, to marketing, to consumption — unpacking the natural resource, sociocultural, and economic dynamics across these stages. We will visit Rio de Janeiro, various parts of Minas Gerais, and São Paulo.

In ANTH/GEOG 308, students will explore the role Urban Agriculture has in contributing to sustainable and equitable food systems, focusing on comparisons between the US and Italy. You will study the similarities and differences of the ecological, social, political, and economic policies and systems that shape Urban Agriculture. By studying in Perugia, you will get hands-on experience with the Urban Agricultural practices of central Italy! In addition to ANTH-GEOG308, students can also enroll in another course offered by the Umbra Institute during SummerSession 2.

ANTH-GEOG 308 will transfer back to UMD as ENSP 389.

Fulbright UK Summer Institutes

 Fulbright UK Summer Institutes for Freshmen and Sophomores (U.S. citizens)

The US-UK Fulbright Commission offers special Summer Institutes for U.S. citizens to study in the United Kingdom (UK). These expenses-paid summer programs provide the opportunity for U.S. undergraduates (U.S. citizens, aged over 18, see eligibility details below), with at least two years of undergraduate study left to complete, to come to participate in a three or four week academic and cultural summer program.

Participants in these programs will get the opportunity to experience an exciting academic program at a highly regarded UK University, explore the culture, heritage and history of the UK and develop their academic ability by improving presentation, research and communication skills.

Eligibility:

• Applicants must be U.S. Citizens;
• have a GPA of 3.7 or higher; 
• be 18 or older; 
• be a second or first year student, and/or have at least two years of undergraduate study remaining after the Institute finishes;
• cannot have spent more than 4 weeks outside the U.S. in the last 5 years. Exceptions are made for refugees and/or students from a different cultural background who have spent time abroad due to family emergencies.

Please note: First-generation college students and students who receive or are eligible for need-based aid are encouraged to apply. 

The Summer Institutes will cover the majority of participant costs. This includes round-trip airfare from the US to the UK, tuition and fees at the host university/institution, accommodation and meals and in some cases a small daily allowance.

The Boren Scholarship

Are you currently studying, or strongly interested in studying a language critical to US national interests? Are you strongly interested in US government service?

The Boren Scholarship offers undergraduates up to $20,000 for long-term (two semesters; one for STEM majors) study abroad focused on learning critical languages. US Citizenship is required, All classes including seniors are eligible. Campus deadline: January 23, 2023.

Eligible regions include Africa, South Asia, East and Southeast Asia, Eastern Europe and former Soviet Republics, Latin America (esp. for Portuguese), and the Middle East. (Boren Scholarships MAY NOT be used for study in Western Europe, Canada, Australia, or New Zealand.) Boren Scholarships may be used for study abroad in Summer 2023, Fall 20243, and/or Spring 2024.

Sustainable Agriculture and Environment in Nicaragua

Travel Abroad (ANSC 372, 2 credits) Jan. 3-17, 2023

 This two-part course will discuss the effects of colonialism and systemic racism on the people and environment of Nicaragua. It will include a broad range of topics relating to the history and current situation in Nicaragua, land reform, agricultural practices, food security, food sovereignty (domestic food production), and environmental protection.

In the travel-abroad course you will practice hands-on techniques in agroecology, visit farms, and explore eco-tours. You will swim in a pristine volcanic lake, ride horseback in cloud forests, and observe turtle hatching. A major focus will be techniques to decrease impacts of climate change, and to decrease greenhouse gas emissions while mitigating poverty and maintaining food sovereignty. Nicaragua produces 90% of the food it consumes and exports beef, coffee,
and fruit among other items. Per capita greenhouse gas emissions are one eighth as high as for the US. You will learn how they are able to achieve these stunning accomplishments.

The course is offered in conjunction with the Nicaraguan farm organization Friends of ATC (Association of Rural Workers). Speakers will include US and Nicaraguan experts representing different sectors of society and discussing the Nicaraguan revolution and how their economic model allows them to address climate change while decreasing poverty and improving food security and food sovereignty.

UMD's Department of Nutrition and Food Science is offering a short term study abroad course to Greece this summer!

Did your study abroad experience get cut short? Do you want to have your Mama Mia moment? Do you want to earn easy credits? With this experience, you will learn more about nutrition and how diet affects health. Eat your way through Greece! You'll learn about olive oil, wine, cheese, and be immersed into Greek culture. All students from any department are welcome!
*Students in the School of Public Health can earn credits towards their degree in their program. Students in the NFSC department can earn credits as an elective.

Gilman Scholarship for Virtual and In-person Study Abroad

Are you an undergraduate student, Pell Grant recipient, and U.S. citizen with international interests? You may be eligible to apply for the U.S. State Department’s Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship, which provides up to $5,000! In the last 5 1/2 years, 151 UMD students have won Gilman Scholarships, winning a total of $524,050!

The deadline to apply for virtual or in-person programs that begin between May 1, 2022 to April 30, 2023, is March 1, 2022.

Passport processing times are significantly delayed and we advise all Terps applying for a new or renewed passport to apply using expedited processing to make sure you have your passport information far in advance of your departure (you’ll need it for visas and program registrations).
*If you currently have a passport, check that it is going to be valid through at least 6 months after the end of your study abroad program. If not, you’ll need to renew ASAP!

International Agricultural Education Fellowship Program with USDA and CRS

Catholic Relief Services (CRS) is recruiting a total of 9 fellows for an 8-month USDA International Agriculture Education fellowship in Uganda beginning Mid-January 2022. Fellows will help establish school-based agricultural education and youth extension programs. Participating Uganda schools receive classroom instruction, field demonstrations, entrepreneurship projects, and leadership development expertise provided by the fellows.

This USDA-funded fellowship offers:

• A small stipend with all expenses covered from January 2022- August 2022
• Funds for airfare, housing, food, visa, insurance, and travel vaccines
• Opportunity to experience agricultural education in an international development setting
• Strong oversight and security team based on strong networks developed over a 65-year presence
• An intentionally cultivated fellowship cohort to help ease transitions and share knowledge
• Opportunities for involvement with other CRS projects during semester breaks

What?

IAEFP CRS is currently recruiting for its class of 9 Fellows to serve in the 2022 school year in Uganda for 8 months.

Who?
CRS is looking for motivated individuals with an interest in international agriculture development and education. Fellows will be a class of premiere individuals who strive to be leaders, coupled with a passion for agriculture. It is important our Fellows know the task ahead of them is not an easy one, but the rewards, personal growth, and experience of this opportunity will play a major role in their lives’ future success.

Desired fellow skills and expertise:

• Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in Agriculture Education/ Agricultural Science, Agribusiness/Agriculture Economics, or training in any agriculture related field.
• Official transcript of undergraduate and/or graduate degree prior to fellowship departure (this is required for visa purposes)
• Understanding of the US agriculture education system, membership with National FFA, NAAE or National 4-H council is a plus
• Experience with or interest in international travel and working across diverse cultures
• Experience in student teaching, classroom instruction internships or teacher certification is a plus.
• Excellent computer skills, youth training, and interpersonal skills
• US citizenship required
