PAID Research Opportunity: Cropland Field Burning Mapping Project

 The Department of Geographical Sciences is seeking motivated students for an exciting research position focused on cropland field burning analysis using Earth observation data. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to important agricultural and environmental research while building valuable technical skills.

As a Research Assistant, you’ll work with state-of-the-art satellite imagery to create critical validation data for burned area mapping products. Your responsibilities will include:

• Vectorizing cropland field boundaries using GIS software
• Analyzing satellite imagery from multiple sources including Planet’s high-resolution commercial data, Sentinel-2, and Landsat-8
• Visual interpretation of cropland field conditions and burn patterns
• Database management by recording detailed field observations in shapefile attribute tables

Required Skills:

• Proficiency in ArcGIS or QGIS
• Strong self-management abilities for independent work
• Access to a personal laptop with GIS software OR willingness to work in GEOG computer labs

Preferred Qualifications:

• Background knowledge in remote sensing imagery interpretation
• Interest in agricultural and environmental applications of GIS

REC Trek: Wye Research and Education Center (Eastern Shore)

Join us for our inaugural "REC Trek" to the Wye Research and Education Center on Maryland's Eastern Shore -- an opportunity to get off campus and see AGNR research in action.

What is a REC Trek?

Think of it as a good old fashioned field trip for our Undergraduates to one of AGNR's Research and Education Centers (RECs) where you can learn about the center, why it matters, and learn about the research happening on site straight from our researchers!

What kind of topics will this REC Trek cover?

The REC Trek to the WyeREC will give you an opportunity to learn about the history and purpose of this unique site and the scope of the research happening at the facility. You will have the opportunity to learn directly from a variety of researchers including specialists focusing on horticulture, water, wildlife, and even weeds.  

Our aim is show you things we can't easily bring to you on campus so expect a mix of demonstrations, seeing research in progress, and possibly a short presentation.

When is this happening?

Thursday, March 26th. Participants will meet at Symons Hall at 11:15am to load vans and hit the road. The Wye is a little over an hour from campus so we plan to arrive no later than 12:30. We will depart the Wye at 4pm to arrive back to campus between 5/5:30 pm. 

Excused absence letters will not be offered. Students with class conflicts should speak to their professors directly if they have questions. 

What else should I know?

Space is limited. Once the vans are full, any additional registrants will get added to a waitlist and be notified if a spot opens up. Due to the limited space and our expected high demands, we will be enforcing a "no show" policy. See the event information on Handshake for more details. 

Additionally, lunch will not be provided, so we recommend students either plan to eat before meeting the group at 11:15 am and/or packing a lunch. We will have some light snacks in the van, but feel free to bring your own food.

That's ok! If there's enough demand, we are hoping to continue this program at least once a year if not once a semester to feature the other AGNR RECs.

Hollings Scholarship for Environmental Studies - Rising Sophomores!

Attention rising SOPHOMORES studying atmospheric and oceanic sciences, environmental engineering, environmental sciences or policy, or ANY major with a strong environmental focus!

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Hollings Scholarship provides two-year academic scholarships (up to a maximum of $9,500 per year) for full-time study, and a 10-week, full-time, paid internship position ($700/week) the summer after junior year at a NOAA facility. In the last eight years, 36 Maryland students have won Hollings Scholarships!

FIRE Summer Research Intern

I hope you are having a great Spring 2023 semester! FIRE is excited to announce the 2023 FIRE Summer Research Internships, a research experience and professional development opportunity built for a wide range of University of Maryland (UMD) students. This opportunity is available to UMD undergraduates both affiliated with and independent of the FIRE program at UMD. 

FIRE Summer Research Internships provide:

• a research-intensive, faculty-mentored 8-week summer experience

           AND

• 3 credits of transcript-impacting FIRE199: FIRE Research Internship course credit

FIRE Summer Research Interns work closely with our FIRE Faculty Leaders and a small group of their undergraduate peers on focused research projects in FIRE stream locations across campus.

All FIRE Summer Research Interns will participate in a broad range of potential research engagements:

• receive fundamental research, technology, and method training (no previous experience is required for all participants),
• learn, test, and implement new research methodologies and protocols,
• design and pilot experiments,
• gather and analyze data,
• and develop and share a finalized project or other research accomplishments.

All FIRE Summer Research Interns will strongly develop their leadership potential and other professional capacities through weekly program-wide seminars and professional development discussions.

Each FIRE stream has a small number of FIRE Summer Research Interns, ensuring selected students get a focused, faculty-mentored research experience.

Eligibility

The FIRE Summer Research Internships is the opportunity through which FIRE is able to offer its resources to students who are currently in FIRE, those who have already completed FIRE, and other UMD undergraduate students who are not affiliated with FIRE.

To be clear on this issue of eligibility for FIRE Summer Research Internships - the following groups of UMD undergraduates are encouraged to consider this exciting opportunity and apply:

• Current FIRE students
  • Enrolled in FIRE Semester 2, Spring 2023
• Current FIRE Peer Research Mentors
• Completed FIRE students
  • Those who have already completed FIRE, not currently FIRE Peer Research Mentors, at UMD completing their degree. Do you wish you could come back to FIRE and have an additional mentored internship experience to broaden your research portfolio? You can!
• All current UMD undergraduates
  • Did you just transfer to UMD? Are you or were you in another first-year program? Do you have extensive research experience or would you like to use the FIRE Summer Research Internships as a gateway to get involved in research? You are eligible!

How to Apply

Due to space limitations, FIRE Summer Research Internship positions are by application through March 27, 2023 (apply here). Our application purposefully does not ask about your grades, GPA, or previous academic and/or research accomplishments. We simply want to know more about you, and your motivations for pursuing a research and professional development experience with FIRE.

We will use the perspectives you share to find students we think are a good match for the opportunity we offer.

The Process After Application

After the application period ends, the following process will occur:

• Application Evaluations & Decisions: March 28, 2023 - April 6, 2023
• Decisions Communicated to Applicants: by April 7, 2023
• Confirmation of Participation: by 5:00 pm on April 14, 2023
  • All accepted applicants will confirm their intention to be a 2023 FIRE Summer Research Intern. During this time, we will contact any applicants placed on the FIRE Summer Research Internships waitlist about positions that have become available.
• Enrollment in Summer FIRE 199 Course: by 5:00 pm on April 21, 2023
  • Students who confirm their acceptance with the FIRE Summer Research Internships are expected to enroll in FIRE199 and will need to pay the tuition and fees required for this course credit. Failure to do so will result in the loss of acceptance into the summer program.

Undergraduate Research Day (URD), Maryland’s largest, most visible and diversified showcase for undergraduate research accomplishments will take place on WEDNESDAY, APRIL 26, 2023, from 1 to 4 pm, with registration and set up opening at 11:30 am. URD will once again take place in the Grand Ballroom of the Stamp Student Union.

 

Presentation proposals may be submitted beginning Wednesday, February 1, 2023 through the MCUR website. More information will be available on the MCUR website beginning January 23, 2023.

The University of Maryland Scholars Summer Research (UM Scholars) Program at the School of

Medicine provides an enriching summer experience for University of Maryland, College Park (UMCP)

undergraduate sophomores and juniors interested in summer research opportunities at the University of

Maryland School of Medicine (UM SOM) at the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) campus

located in Baltimore City. Those considering pursuing future MD, PhD, MD-MS or MD-PhD, or other

health profession degrees are highly recommended to consider this program.

Funded by the University of Maryland Strategic Partnership: MPowering the State (MPower), the UM

Scholars Program at the School of Medicine is an intensive summer biomedical research program for

UMCP undergraduates majoring in science, engineering, and mathematics fields and interested in

biomedical research, medical, and health professions. Applicants undergo a competitive selection process for the program and once selected, are matched with faculty researchers who have leading-edge

biomedical and medical research projects. The Scholars will conduct intensive research and immerse in

enrichment experiences for 9 weeks at the School of Medicine during the summer.

Program Highlights

• The Scholars engage in clinical, basic and translational research under the mentorship of

renowned scientists and physician scientists.

• The Scholars interact with physicians, scientists, physician-scientists, medical and graduate

students, postdoctoral fellows and clinical residents throughout the summer both ad hoc and

during program events.

• The Scholars attend a series of seminars through which they learn about the cutting-edge

research conducted by UMB faculty as well as the life-journeys of the highly accomplished

faculty speakers.

• The Scholars interact with other nationally-recruited undergraduate students who are being

mentored in programs covering specialty research fields such as cancer. The Scholars also

interact with medical and graduate students.

• During the Mid-Summer Research Retreat, the Scholars interact in small-group settings with

knowledgeable experts including medical school admissions deans, graduate program directors,

research scientists, academic physicians, and NIH program directors who share their advice and

insights.

• The Scholars present their research work alongside medical students and other undergraduate

students in the Student Research Forum in oral and poster formats at the end of the summer.

• Alumni Scholars have ascended to medical, dentistry, and graduate schools.

Undergraduate Research Assistant in Waste to Energy

Undergraduate Student Research Assistant in Waste to Energy The Bioenergy and Bioprocessing Technology Laboratory under the direction of Dr. Stephanie Lansing in the Department of Environmental Science and Technology is looking to hire a part-time (15-20 hours/week) Undergraduate Research Assistant for waste to energy research. The work involves collecting and analyzing food waste, manure, wastewater, and municipal solid waste. Analyzing samples in the laboratory for organic content, energy production potential, and other parameters. The student would also be responsible for inputting data into Excel spreadsheets, washing laboratory glassware, filtering samples, and keeping the laboratory environment clean. The student must be comfortable working with laboratory equipment, food waste/manure samples. 

Previous lab experience is a plus, but not necessary. The student must show a demonstrated work ethic, attention to detail, a willingness to learn, and stick to a punctual laboratory work schedule. Priority will be given to underclassmen (freshmen, sophomore and juniors) to allow for the possibility of the student working multiple years in the Bioenergy and Bioprocessing Technology Laboratory, but all levels are welcome to apply. 

Pay rate will start at $15/hour. There is a possibility of pay increases with experienced gains. Opportunities include professional development with mentoring from graduate students, post-docs, and Dr. Lansing. Attendance at monthly laboratory meetings is mandatory, where relevant research topics will be discussed and results from the laboratory experiments presented.

AGNR Cornerstone Event - Invitation to Submit Posters and Join Student Poster Competition

On October 12, we will celebrate our college’s 4th Annual Cornerstone event, themed around our strategic initiative of Optimize Urban Environments Through Design, Green Technology, and Community Engagement. 

Calls for poster submissions are now open from faculty, staff, and partners, etc. This is our collective opportunity to showcase the depth and myriad of research, Extension, and teaching being undertaken in the college. Our goal is to become the leader and first-rank resource for information and solutions to environmental and social urban sustainability problems.

Once again, we are featuring a student poster competition, a component of the program that has been very successful in years past. We hope that you will submit your posters for any research projects related to our theme of Optimizing Urban Environments and any of our Five AGNR Strategic Initiatives.

Important things to remember:

1. Poster size should be 4ft x 4ft [48in x 48in] or smaller
2. One submission only per Lead Student-Author [Faculty can submit more than one poster if they want to showcase more than one research or outreach topic.]
3. Bring poster and sign-in between 7:30-9:00AM on October 12 inside the Charles Carroll Room of Stamp Union. 
4. Students need to be present during the Poster Session [12:30-1:30PM] to explain their project and answer questions of the Judges.
5. Awards will be given at the closing session at 4:00PM. Students- Please be there!
6. Remove poster only after the Event ends at 6:00PM.  Please let someone know at the Poster-sign-in desk if you want us to keep your poster for you to collect later.

Posters will be judged based on the following criteria:

• Organization (Neatness, Clarity of Fonts, graphs, tables, text, etc.)  = 15 points
• Clarity of Hypothesis, Objectives, Goals, etc. = 15 points
• Overall Scientific Quality (Methods, Results, Conclusions, etc.) = 40 points
• Clarity of Oral Presentation = 30 points
