The Department of Geographical Sciences is seeking motivated students for an exciting research position focused on cropland field burning analysis using Earth observation data. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to important agricultural and environmental research while building valuable technical skills.
As a Research Assistant, you’ll work with state-of-the-art satellite imagery to create critical validation data for burned area mapping products. Your responsibilities will include:
- Vectorizing cropland field boundaries using GIS software
- Analyzing satellite imagery from multiple sources including Planet’s high-resolution commercial data, Sentinel-2, and Landsat-8
- Visual interpretation of cropland field conditions and burn patterns
- Database management by recording detailed field observations in shapefile attribute tables
Required Skills:
- Proficiency in ArcGIS or QGIS
- Strong self-management abilities for independent work
- Access to a personal laptop with GIS software OR willingness to work in GEOG computer labs
Preferred Qualifications:
- Background knowledge in remote sensing imagery interpretation
- Interest in agricultural and environmental applications of GIS
