House Agriculture Committee Internship


Maryland Natural Resources Technician Job Opening

The main purpose of this position is to lead and provide technical support for natural resource survey projects to include logistical and administrative support, data entry and field preparation work for the Chesapeake Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve (CBNERR). The position requires a motivated, organized individual who must be able to work independently to collect field data through the monitoring of experimental sites and survey work. This includes collecting basic water quality parameters using handheld multimeter devices, operating of boats and equipment, conducting inventories of fish populations, capturing and measuring fish species of interest, conducting avian monitoring, including nest box fate and call back surveys, and maintenance of bird nesting boxes, maintaining records and data entry, assisting with outreach and communication, maintaining field and laboratory equipment and performing other duties as assigned.

The natural resources technician will also support field logistics and data collection for the Resiliency through Restoration shoreline monitoring effort. They will assist in managing the equipment and collecting field observations of emergent and/or submerged aquatic vegetation, shoreline and marsh elevation (using survey equipment), sediment characterization and wildlife activity. The technician may also assist in data entry, QA/QC and database management related to this project. 

Employee will receive moderate supervision from a Natural Resources Biologist, Environmental Specialist or other designated administrator. The work may require lifting or carrying heavy objects or equipment weighing over twenty-five pounds. The incumbent will be required to work outdoors in all types of weather conditions. Some aspects of the work, such as the handling of wildlife and working aboard a boat are considered hazardous. Gaithersburg Stormwater Program Manager

The Department of Public Works has an exceptional opportunity for an experienced, hands-on Stormwater Program Manager to plan, coordinate, implement, oversee, and lead the City's stormwater quality management program, which involves the development, implementation, and enforcement of City-wide stormwater and water quality ordinances, programs, and policies, as well as the City's compliance with applicable federal and state stormwater laws, rules, and permits.

The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in stormwater program management including delivering stormwater capital improvement projects, as well as construction management and staff management experience; be an innovative thinker who can anticipate problems before they develop; and possess a solution-based vision for community and for stormwater programs. You must have a clear and open communication style, excellent listening skills, and be able to negotiate in the public interest and balance conflicting and competing interests. Excellent analytical, customer service, interpersonal, verbal/written communication, and presentation skills are expected; a proven ability to lead by example, strong initiative, good judgment, and common sense are essential.

Manager Position at Park View Farmers Market

Program Responsibilities

  • Ensure all vendors whose products apply are accepting these forms of payment
  • Manage the Park Morton Public Housing partnership, an education and outreach empowerment program designed to help the more than 350 people living at Park Morton live healthier lives

  • Manage the Market Menu to ensure that all vendor products, to the extent possible, are on the menu during market
  • Research and apply for applicable community partnerships which would benefit the market and its consumers
  • Ensure all DC rules and regulations are met
  • Research and write grants for government programs
Market Day Responsibilities
  • Work each market day from 9am to 2pm, duties may include:
    • Set up, place market signs, assist vendors
    • Answer vendor and consumer questions
    • Operate market information booth
    • Distribute nutritional education materials
    • Have recipes available for seasonal, local foods available in the market
  • Conduct periodic customer counts to assess the level of growth in market attendance
  • Provide consumer education and assistance for access to WIC, SNAP, FMNP and SFNMP (e.g., brochures, on-site assistance)
  • Ensure the market information booth is clean once the market is closed
Administrative Responsibilities
  • Attend one management meeting per week (can be done telephonically)
  • Help create and document systems, processes and controls
  • Help maintain database of information about farmers, vendors, their contact information, and any licenses or permits each vendor possesses based on the products they are selling
  • Support vendor recruitment and management
  • Assist with writing and compiling performance and assessment reports for each market day
Qualifications

Executive Director Position at Crossroads Community Food Network

Crossroads Community Food Network (“Crossroads”), a food access nonprofit based in Takoma Park, MD, is seeking an Executive Director to lead and grow a small but dynamic and innovative organization. Crossroads works to bolster the local food system through programs that support and unite those who grow, make, and eat fresh, healthy food.

The ideal candidate will be able both to think broadly and strategically and also be detail oriented and organized. Experience with food systems work and success as a nonprofit fundraiser is required. The full-time position is based in Takoma Park, MD, and the annual salary is $72,800. NOAA Hollings Scholarship and Internship

Attention SOPHOMORES studying ANY major with a strong environmental focus or interest! The Hollings Scholarship provides two-year academic scholarships (up to a maximum of $9,500 per year) for full-time study, and a 10-week, full-time, paid internship position ($650/week) the summer after junior year at a NOAA facility. In the last five years, 26 Maryland students have won Hollings Scholarships.

Boren Scholarships: Study Abroad for Critical Languages

The Boren Scholarship is aimed at undergraduates (US citizens) who want to study abroad for one or two semesters (preferably) in 2020-21 in non-traditional regions and countries, and who are interested in learning the languages of those areas. Maryland ranks #1 in the nation in Boren Scholarships awarded over the past 8 years!!! The Boren Scholarship is a U.S. Government-funded award that seeks applicants who have a strong interest in future Government service; the award carries a one-year service expectation.

Eligible regions include Africa, South Asia, East and Southeast Asia, Eastern Europe and former Soviet Republics, Latin America, and the Middle East. Rangel Summer Enrichment Program for International Affairs

Are you an undergraduate student planning a career in International Affairs? Do you receive need-based financial aid? Apply for the Maryland 2020 Summer Scholars Program

The Maryland Summer Scholars Program (MSS) provides opportunities for University of Maryland, College Park (UMD) undergraduates to spend much of the summer working closely with faculty mentors on ambitious research, scholarly, or artistic projects. The MSS program provides awards of $3,000 to approximately 25-30 undergraduates each summer.

Many Summer Scholars expand their summer research into an independent study or honors thesis project the following autumn semester, and find that their research experience helps distinguish their applications for graduate study, fellowships, internships, employment and other competitive opportunities. 

Maryland Summer Scholars (MSS) may conduct their summer research on the College Park campus or elsewhere in the U.S. or abroad as required by the nature of the project. Students whose projects require travel for an extended period of time to off campus locations (not to include regular commuting) may submit a travel supplement request as directed in the online application form. Travel supplements will not exceed $1,000.

You are eligible to apply for an MSS award if you have earned 12 or more UMD course credits (not including AP or IB credits) by the date of the application deadline, if you have a cumulative UMD GPA of 3.40 or higher by the date of the application deadline, and if you expect to receive your undergraduate degree no earlier than December 2020. All academic majors are eligible. The deadline to apply for summer 2020 awards will be Thursday, February 13, 2020. It is important that candidates begin developing their proposals as soon as possible.

Urban Gardener
Urban Farmers are responsible for the maintenance of clients’ organic vegetable gardens, ensuring that they are beautiful and productive! On an average day they travel to 3-4 gardens, primarily residential, and maintain between 20-30 gardens over the course of a two-week period. New staff members also have the opportunity to work with senior staff on larger farm projects and garden installations, schedule permitting. Farmers work independently, driving from garden to garden, to perform all necessary garden tasks, and are supported remotely by our office crew and in the field by a team of experienced senior farmers. Service area ranges throughout the beltway area, but daily routes are limited to specific neighborhoods to minimize travel time. Russel Brinsfield Internship Program

The Russ Brinsfield Internship Program is a collaboration between the Hughes Center and the University of Maryland Agriculture Law Education Initiative. The internship program, which began in 2017, engages an undergraduate student from the University of Maryland College of AGNR and a law student enrolled at the Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law working together to develop viable solutions to a variety of complex environmental, agricultural and forestry-related issues.

The Harry R. Hughes Center for Agro-Ecology, Inc. and the Agriculture Law Education Initiative (ALEI) are seeking law and undergraduate student applicants interested in careers in agriculture, environmental conservation, forestry, and/or policy for the 2020 Russell Brinsfield Agro-Ecology Summer Internship program. Two students will be selected for this residential internship, which includes a competitive salary and free housing located at the Wye Research and Education Center in Queenstown, Maryland.

The internship will introduce you to a number of complex natural resource issues, including nutrient management for the Chesapeake Bay, forestry, and local food production. During the course of the internship, you will meet diverse stakeholders and engage in the complex interaction between the agricultural and the environmental conservation and policy communities. You will be introduced to legislators and staff at state agencies as you work to resolve challenges. The internship is funded by organizations seeking to build leaders who are able to appreciate all sides of complex issues and develop solutions that consider the needs of industry, environment, economic, and policymakers.

DSAC Town Hall Meeting on Nov. 18th

AGNR's Dean's Student Advisory Council (DSAC) invites ALL AGNR students to attend this semester's Town Hall November 18th at 5pm in ESJ 1215. This event gives AGNR students the opportunity to meet the current AGNR DSAC board, gather with fellow students, and provide feedback on the AGNR community to DSAC. A list of questions will be on projected during the event to foster dialogue, such as: 
  • What elements of your AGNR experience do you hope to continue?
  • Are there elements in your AGNR experience you want changed?
  • What do you hope to see in the future from DSAC?
These questions will provide a starting point for discussion and therefore further comments and questions are highly encouraged from students attending! The feedback from the event will be recorded and DSAC will synthesize the dialogue for the Dean's office. Additionally, hot beverages and snacks will be available during the event.

Bradford Woods Internships Available

Bradford Woods is Indiana University’s Outdoor Center, serving youth and adults through experiential and therapeutic learning methods for over 60 years. They continue to hire seasonal staff on an ongoing basis for Spring, Summer, and Fall to serve as Professional Outdoor Instructors (POIs). These positions are primarily based in the field working directly with groups either teaching standards-based curriculum or facilitating teambuilding sessions. The POI position runs twelve-weeks at approximately 55 hours per week. It pairs nicely as an internship. They provide a weekly stipend and free housing and food with programs.

Hiring dates for next year are as follows:
March 1 – May 23, 2020
May 27 – August 22, 2020
August 23 – November 14, 2020

Two Boots Farm Assistant Farm Manager Position Available

Two Boots Farm is looking for an Assistant Farm Manager to join them full time for the 2020 season. The Assistant Farm Manager will work alongside the Production Manager and owner and engage in all aspects of day-to-day work in running the farm. Their season runs early April – mid November. The ideal candidate will be able to start working with them part time for the rest of the 2019 season (until mid-Dec.) to begin training for a full time position in 2020. 

Two Boots Farm is a small, intensive farm raising Certified Organic flowers and produce in Carroll County, Maryland. They are woman-owned and operated. Their goods are sold at Baltimore City farmers’ markets, as well as to florists, restaurants, and area grocery stores. They use intensive farming techniques on 1.5 acres implementing no till practices. They also grow shiitake mushrooms and have a pawpaw orchard.

ONEUSDA 2020 Summer Pathways Intern Announcements

The USDA has just announced openings for their Summer 2020 Internships. These are an excellent opportunity to gain experience and network. Please see the links below that discuss the OneUSDA Internship Program. Interested students must apply by November 15 (most federal postings close at 11:59 PM EST). Students can apply to more than one internship and students can increase their chances of being accepted if they are open to locations outside of the DMV. 

It is highly suggested that you develop a well written resume prior to applying. For resume critiques, you can attend drop ins Mondays - Friday from 11am - 3:30 pm, or you can schedule an appointment with Christina Farmer  or other career advsiors via Careers4Terps.
