Looking for a way to make real impact, gain experience, and get paid for it? The Rawlings Undergraduate Leadership Fellows Program at UMD is now accepting applications.

This selective, two-semester experience is open to students from ALL majors who are ready to turn their ideas into action and lead meaningful change.

As a Rawlings Fellow, you will:

 Receive a $1,000 stipend upon successful completion
 Design and lead your own Community Action Project (CAP)
 Intern with a nonprofit or political organization
 Participate in a leadership course and hands-on workshops
 Connect directly with elected officials, nonprofit leaders, and community advocates
 Build the skills to advocate for communities and drive real change

The Lafayette Fellowship

Applications are now open for the inaugural Lafayette Fellowship, a prestigious new graduate scholarship in France for tomorrow’s leaders, offered by the French Embassy in the United States.  Marking the 250th anniversary of the American Declaration of Independence and in celebration of French-American friendship, the Lafayette Fellowship will fund one year of master’s level study in France for up to 30 outstanding American students.    Open to both French-speaking and non-French-speaking candidates, the initiative partners with 15 of the top French higher education institutions, offering programs across science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM); the humanities and social sciences; and the arts, taughtDeither in French or entirely in English. Undergrad Summer Internship Opportunity

The Harry R. Hughes will award a fellowship for an exceptional scholar or graduate student in the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources in the summer of 2025.

The Center seeks to hire a student (primarily remote, but some travel) for the summer to accelerate the dissemination of Hughes Center-funded research. The selected student will work with faculty funded by the Harry R. Hughes Center for Agro-Ecology to develop news articles for The Conversation https://theconversation.com/us. The Conservation is a nonprofit, independent news organization that publishes University scholarly research to inform the public in diverse areas such as policy, science, health, economics, and agriculture.

The fellowship recipient will have the opportunity to learn about numerous research projects funded through the Hughes Center that have focused on conservation practices, the food system, crop production, public policy related to agriculture, and many other topics. The Hughes Center projects typically fall under the Ensure Healthy Watersheds and the Chesapeake Bay, Advance Innovative, Profitable, and Sustainable Agricultural Production Systems Strategic Initiatives. 

The student should be an undergraduate or graduate student with continuing enrollment in the fall. The internship will be ten weeks in duration, and 40 hours per week. The student will receive $19.91 per hour.

5 State Department Grad Fellowships

 Are you interested in joining the Foreign Service of the U.S. Department of State, USAID, or Department of Agriculture? Do you want to make a positive change in the world? 

IMPORTANT: These 5 State Dept. and 1 Dept. of Agriculture programs seek applications from students and recent graduates who are U.S. citizens, and encourage applications from women and those who are members of minority groups historically underrepresented in the Foreign Service. All programs seek applicants with a history of receiving, or qualifying for, NEED-BASED FINANCIAL AID.

4. The Foreign Affairs IT (FAIT) Fellowship is a two-year program that provides academic funding for an IT-related degree, internships, professional development and mentorship – culminating in an appointment in the Foreign Service of the U.S. Department of State as an Information Management Specialist (IMS). The fellowship may be used for the final two years of a bachelor's program or for the full two years of a master's program. 

5. The Dept. of Agriculture FAS International Agricultural Fellowship provides financial support through two years of graduate study in Agribusiness, Agricultural Economics or related field, internships, mentoring, and professional development activities leading to an appointment in the Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) of the USDA.

SERVICE REQUIREMENT: Recipients of the graduate programs must complete a minimum five-year term of service as a Foreign Service Officer (three years for the Clarke program).

ELIGIBILITY:

• Applicants for the Pickering, Rangel, Payne, and FAS programs must be seeking admission to enter graduate school in the fall of 2025 (fall 2026 for Clarke) for a two-year program at a U.S. university in an area of relevance to the Foreign Service.
• Applicants may be rising seniors or recent college graduates. For the FAIT program applicants must be at least rising Sophomores, and should be majoring in an IT-related field.
• Applicants must have a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher on a 4.0 scale at the time of application.
• Applicants must be U.S. citizens.

RCC Fellowship

The RCC Fellowship Program is designed to identify students with a passion for environmental education, organizing and advocacy and provide them with training in Washington, DC, mentorship from RCC environmental staff, and financial support to do the valuable work they care about and become life-long advocates for the environment. 

****Applicants must be planning to be enrolled at a U.S. college or university ( for undergraduate or masters education) for the Fall 2024-Spring 2025 school year.****

RCC Fellows become leaders and active participants in the RCC’s national campus program with over 5,000 active faculty, students, staff and administrators at 56 campuses. As part of the RCC team, Fellows also help build RCC’s network of active students and faculty and have the opportunity to publish and speak on behalf of a respected national organization.

The RCC Fellowship program is a paid opportunity. RCC Fellows will receive a $2,000 stipend for their work over the course of the year. Furthermore, Fellows will attend a training in Washington, DC this summer, hosted by RCC staff to sharpen their organizing skills. Lastly, Fellows will develop critical contacts and experience as they look forward to careers in the environmental movement. Deadline to apply is March 15th, 2024.

Graduate Research Fellowship Program

 Are you applying to STEM/social/behavioral sciences PhD programs this Fall 2023? Or will you be a 1st or 2nd year grad student in these fields in Fall 2023?

You should apply for the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program (NSF GRFP)!

The NSF GRFP provides 3 years of full support for PhD studies, with an annual stipend of $37,000, in science, math, engineering, and social/behavioral science fields. US Citizens and Permanent Residents are eligible. You can visit the NSF informational website here.

How do I know which scholarship is right for me?



Each of the GCA’s 29 merit-based scholarships has its own page of information, including a description, eligibility qualifications, award amounts, special considerations, due dates, and links to each scholarship application. 

GCA scholarships are organized by area of study. Clicking on an area of study will display a drop-down menu listing the particular scholarships, fellowships, and/or awards under that area of study. 

Interested scholars should review the offerings to find the right one for their interests. School advisors may be able to help.

How many scholarships can I apply for?

Applicants may apply to only one scholarship, fellowship, or award per year. 

Are there eligibility requirements?

GCA scholarships are open to U.S. citizens or permanent residents who are enrolled at a U.S.- based institution. (Exception: The Rome Prize Fellowship and The GCA/RHS Interchange Fellowship are open to U.S. citizens only).

Each scholarship has its own additional eligibility requirements pertaining to academic level and area of interest. Please review the scholarship pages in which you are interested for complete details. It is up to the applicant to determine for which scholarships they are eligible.

What are the deadlines?

Each scholarship, fellowship, or award has its own application deadline. The GCA does not grant exceptions. Applicants must ensure that all required materials are submitted by the specified due date.

When will I be notified if I am awarded a scholarship?

Applicants will be notified via email in early to mid-March whether or not they have received a scholarship. At that time, an agreement form will be sent to those who have received a scholarship, which must be completed electronically by April 1. Awards are distributed at the end of April. 

What else should I know?

Some applications will be made directly to GCA Headquarters, where they will be reviewed by the GCA Scholarship Committee.

Other applications will be sent to collaborating institutions, where a selection committee of experts in the field will review the applications. Their recommendations are then sent to the GCA Scholarship Committee for final approval.

Indigenous Foodways Reporting Fellowship

Civil Eats is seeking an experienced journalist to become our next Indigenous Foodways Fellow, contributing monthly features and occasional opinion pieces to our Indigenous Foodways coverage. This year-long, part-time contracted position will include reporting in-depth on issues of food sovereignty, food security, and food and cultural traditions across North America. We’re looking for an experienced reporter with an interest in and history of food and agriculture reporting to join our virtual team and build on our long history of reporting on these topics.

The fellow will work closely with the Civil Eats editorial team, including taking part in occasional editorial meetings. The fellowship includes a $20,000 stipend, and Native writers are encouraged to apply.

USDA/FAS Diversity Fellowship Program for undergraduate students

The Foreign Agricultural Service is recruiting for candidates for the Diversity Fellowship Program. This is a call for applications to begin master's level studies in Fall 2023. The deadline for applications is October 6. This may be a great opportunity if you have a chapter of MANNRS within your college.

The USDA Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) Diversity Fellowship Program (FDFP) creates a path for outstanding bachelor’s degree students of any major to pursue careers in the FAS Foreign Service. The program encourages the application of members of minority groups historically underrepresented in USDA and those with financial need. Based on the fundamental principle that diversity is a strength in U.S. engagement with the world, the program values candidates representing a wide range of backgrounds, including ethnic, racial, social, and geographic diversity. 

Selected students will receive a fully funded master’s degree in Agribusiness or Agricultural Economics from the accredited U.S. university of their choice and are matriculated into the FAS Foreign Service upon completion of all requirements. Summer 2023 International Affairs Programs [Rangel/PPIA) - Virtual UMD Scholar Panel

 Are you an undergraduate student interested in making a positive change in the world? Do you receive need-based financial aid? If so, there are two programs you should learn about! 

1. The PPIA (Public Policy and International Affairs Junior Fellows) program is for juniors with strong interests in pursuing careers in international affairs or domestic public policy.

 

This all-expenses-paid program for summer 2023 includes courses (with transferable credit), a full range of extracurricular activities, and career-development support, travel & room and board, and more!

Important: **This program focuses on students receiving need-based financial aid (demonstrated by FAFSA), as well as students from groups historically underrepresented in international affairs leadership roles in government, nonprofits, international organizations and other institutional settings.**

PPIA is open to juniors who are U.S. citizens, permanent residents, or DACA recipients; GPA of 3.0 recommended.

2. The Rangel Summer Enrichment Program is for students with strong interests in pursuing careers in international affairs. The program provides undergraduate students with a deeper appreciation of current issues and trends in international affairs, a greater understanding of career opportunities in international affairs, and the enhanced knowledge and skills to pursue such careers.

This all-expense-paid program takes place at Howard University for six weeks in summer 2023.

Important: the Rangel program encourages the application of members of minority groups historically underrepresented in the Foreign Service.

Rangel is open to sophomores, juniors, and seniors and requires U.S. citizenship. Rangel requires a GPA minimum of 3.2.

The deadline will be in early February 2023.

USDA Foreign Agricultural Service FAS Diversity Fellowship Program

Federal and Global Fellows- 2nd Wave of Applications

The second wave of applications is now open for Global/Federal Fellows, which features a one-year active-learning program for students interested in gaining federal government or nonprofit experience. The program consists of a fall 2022 seminar and spring 2023 internship; students choose from a number of weekly seminars and for-credit internships at multiple sites in the Washington, D.C., area. Past internships have been at the U.S. Department of State, International Rescue Committee, the United Nations and more. Apply by March 27.

Rawlings Undergraduate Leadership Fellows Program

The Rawlings Undergraduate Leadership Fellows Program honors the legacy of Howard Peters "Pete" Rawlings, who was a member of the Maryland House of Delegates representing the 40th district for more than two decades. The Rawlings Program provides students the opportunity to follow in the footsteps of Delegate Rawlings and develop as a champion for those marginalized and underrepresented in public leadership & decision-making processes.

Working with faculty, alumni and local leaders, Rawlings Fellows will develop skills and resources needed to take on leadership roles during the program and into their careers. Fellows will also grow to understand the importance of cultural pluralism and advocacy for unheard voices while developing leadership skills needed to adequately address these disparities.

The program offers opportunities for mentorship, professional development events, potential engagements with local & state leaders, the opportunity to secure an internship with a government agency, political organization or nonprofit and gain hands-on experience to actively serve in the local community. These program components help Rawlings Fellows realize their commitment to public service and further develop critical leadership skills necessary for a career in government, nonprofits or private sector jobs related to leadership and advocacy for the underrepresented.

Langenberg Legacy Program Fellowship

The University System of Maryland (USM) Langenberg Legacy Program invites applicants for the inaugural class of Langenberg Legacy Fellows. USM is committed to civic education and civic engagement, and the Langenberg Legacy is a grant program that supports this priority by funding student-led projects dedicated to civic engagement. The Langenberg Legacy evolved out of the Langenberg Lecture and Award program, which was originally established to honor former USM Chancellor Donald N. Langenberg on his retirement in 2002. The existential threats of our time include wealth inequality, the climate crisis, voter suppression, and widespread disinformation campaigns, among others. Students are invited to propose projects that aim to combat these threats on a small scale, promoting justice within their university community. 

Students who are motivated to improve the world we live in through local, justice-oriented action are encouraged to apply. USM also encourages participation from students representing a diversity of backgrounds and perspectives. Each institution with USM is invited to nominate one Langenberg Legacy Fellow and by completing the application you will be entered into the selection process of College Park undergraduate and graduate student applicants at the University of Maryland. There will be one Legacy fellow selected for the University of Maryland - College Park to take their place among others from within the USM institution fellows.

International Agricultural Education Fellowship Program with USDA and CRS

Catholic Relief Services (CRS) is recruiting a total of 9 fellows for an 8-month USDA International Agriculture Education fellowship in Uganda beginning Mid-January 2022. Fellows will help establish school-based agricultural education and youth extension programs. Participating Uganda schools receive classroom instruction, field demonstrations, entrepreneurship projects, and leadership development expertise provided by the fellows.

This USDA-funded fellowship offers:

• A small stipend with all expenses covered from January 2022- August 2022
• Funds for airfare, housing, food, visa, insurance, and travel vaccines
• Opportunity to experience agricultural education in an international development setting
• Strong oversight and security team based on strong networks developed over a 65-year presence

CRS is looking for motivated individuals with an interest in international agriculture development and education. Fellows will be a class of premiere individuals who strive to be leaders, coupled with a passion for agriculture. It is important our Fellows know the task ahead of them is not an easy one, but the rewards, personal growth, and experience of this opportunity will play a major role in their lives’ future success.

Desired fellow skills and expertise:

• Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in Agriculture Education/ Agricultural Science, Agribusiness/Agriculture Economics, or training in any agriculture related field.
• Official transcript of undergraduate and/or graduate degree prior to fellowship departure (this is required for visa purposes)
• Understanding of the US agriculture education system, membership with National FFA, NAAE or National 4-H council is a plus
• Experience with or interest in international travel and working across diverse cultures
• Experience in student teaching, classroom instruction internships or teacher certification is a plus.
• Excellent computer skills, youth training, and interpersonal skills
• US citizenship required

Rangel International Affairs Summer Enrichment Program

If you’re interested in international affairs, consider applying for the Rangel Summer Enrichment Program, an all-expenses-paid program at Howard University from June 13 to July 22, 2022, that provides students with a greater knowledge of current issues in international affairs and the enhanced skills to pursue career opportunities. The program encourages the application of members of minority groups historically underrepresented in the Foreign Service. UMD’s National Scholarships Office is offering info sessions for interested students: Thursday, Dec. 2, at 12 p.m. or 4 p.m. and Friday, Dec. 3, at 12 p.m.
