Student Volunteer Opportunity at CAFB:

The Capital Area Food Bank leads our region’s efforts to provide equitable access to
food and opportunity to people struggling with hunger and food insecurity. Each year,
we source and distribute the food for more than 60 million meals. Together with more
than 400 local partners, we’re providing the food people need to thrive today. We’re also
working with partners to pair food with services that can create permanent pathways out
of hunger tomorrow. We are seeking GW students to support our field trip programming
and bring nutrition education to students across the DMV! 

Volunteer Opportunity Available: 
1. Field Trip Assistant 
- Volunteers will assist the Nutrition Education Coordinator with running
nutrition education and garden field trip programming. 
- Tasks include: setting up for field trips, leading nutrition education
activities, cleaning up after field trips, outreach, curricula development 
- Schedule varies weekly, but most support is needed Tuesday,
Wednesdays, and/or Thursdays from 9am-12pm.  
- This opportunity will be between 3-6 hours a week and will be ongoing
throughout the school year.  
- Skills/interests needed: Nutrition education, working with children, Spanish
language skills are a plus, interest in curricula development and/or
community outreach. 
- Capacity: 3 or 4 volunteers are needed!

Volunteers Needed: Terps Move Out Donation Drive

As the spring semester comes to a close, the Terp to Terp Campus ReUse Store team is looking for volunteers to assist with the Terps Move-Out Donation Drive. Volunteer shifts run from Monday, May 19 to Wednesday, May 28. 

Volunteers like you play a crucial role in helping move and sort items collected at our residence hall donation locations. With our volunteers' help we have kept useful items from going to the landfill and recirculated them to our student Terps. Since May of 2021 we have collected over 44,000 pounds of food, kitchen accessories, school supplies, appliances, room decor, clothing and more for our UMD students.

Assateague Island National Seashore Team

If you've ever wanted to join the Assateague Island National Seashore team, now's your chance!

Learn about the resources on Assateague Island, assist in giving interpretation programs like crabbing and clamming, help interpret the visitor center’s exhibits and saltwater aquariums, and more!

Volunteer Opportunity with Exotics

Smithsonian’s National Zoo & Conservation Biology Institute

Volunteers have the opportunity to learn about animals and help educate the public about conservation and animal care.

Age requirement: Volunteers must be at least 18 years old to apply for current volunteer positions, including Zoo Aides and Zoo Interpreters.  

Time commitment: Most volunteer programs require a one-year commitment but all are encouraged to apply. Please see each position description for information on requirements for that particular program. Some short-term and single-day opportunities may be available seasonally. 

Recruitment process: Each volunteer opportunity has an application and interview process. If accepted, full-time volunteers must pass a Smithsonian background check and complete initial training. Please be aware that some positions may also require proof of certain vaccinations.

Food Recovery Network Volunteers

Food Recovery Network, an on-campus organization that recovers leftover food from dining halls to be redistributed to those in need, is currently recruiting drivers. This is a volunteer position that is a weekly commitment in which a driver transports recovered food from a dining hall to a nearby facility. Fundraising Mission for The College of Agriculture and Natural Resources (AGNR) 

AGNR at the University of Maryland, has a specific department, Development/External Relations, dedicated to raising private sector dollars from individuals, corporations and foundations to provide support for the college priorities as it pertains to students, faculty/staff, and some aspects of research.  The activities to generate development revenue are focused to prospective individuals, corporations and foundations who have the propensity to support AGNR through annual and specific campaigns throughout the year.  Our results support student scholarships, clubs and programs.  In addition, funds are raised to support faculty positions and research.  Strategy for development at AGNR is donor centric and focuses on engagement and stewardship activities which provide experiences for donors and prospects to understand the needs of AGNR. 

 

Ambassador Description

Thank you for your interest in the AGNR Student Development Ambassador role.  This is a dedicated undergraduate volunteer at the University of Maryland, enrolled in AGNR. The purpose of this role is to partner with the Development Team to implement multiple strategies to inform and engage donors to contribute to AGNR’s annual giving campaign plus steward key donors on behalf of the college.  Our goal is to increase revenue to provide resources for our students. *This is an unpaid opportunity. 

 

Key Projects/Events

·       Serve as spokesperson in multiple social media channels, such as videos posted on Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, and other fundraising platforms (ThankView and LAUNCH)

·       Serve as student spokesperson around various campaigns such as Giving Tuesday (November), UMD Giving Day (March) and annual giving

·       Serve as student speaker at the annual Dean’s Circle Luncheon (Oct.) and Celebration of Scholarships Luncheon (Feb.)

Volunteer with the Food Recovery Network

The Food Recovery Network (FRN) is a student group at the University of Maryland dedicated to packing surplus food from University diners and delivering it to community partners that provide meals for the hungry in the Washington, D.C. area. This engages a diverse array of students, staff, faculty, and administrators to build a community around the service they do, and helps to make the University of Maryland a leader in sustainability by taking a vital step towards zero waste.

• A general understanding of the college admissions and application process.

EcoCity Farms is looking for 1-2 volunteers to assist in teaching an after-school program for youth to learn about sustainability, health and wellness, and urban agriculture. Volunteer with College Park Meals on Wheels

Meals on Wheel of College Park relies on their dedicated volunteers to pack and deliver meals for the cities of College Park, Greenbelt, Beltsville, Berwyn Heights and Adelphi. They may also cover other nearby areas. 

The facility if located approximately 7 minutes away from campus. If you would like to assist AGNR student Emily Hillig with prepping the meals (~7-10am) or driving (10:30-11:30am) them to houses, please contact ehillig@terpmail.umd.edu.
