Job Summary: 

To plan and conduct instructional programs designed primarily to prepare and train youths for gainful employment or entrepreneurship in agricultural careers following high school or college; to perform ancillary functions in support of these instructional programs in agriculture; to assist in other school activities as assigned.

Essential Duties: 

1. Provides agricultural instruction that is realistic in terms of current and future job specifications.
2. Utilizes a variety of teaching methods which will promote the attainment of desirable goals by each student.
3. Arranges sufficient contact with the work community so that the technical competency of the teachers will be maintained.
4. Participates in the development of instructional materials.
5. Participates in curriculum development for the specific education assignment and for the total program of the schools.
6. Participates in studies of the needs of youths in the school community.
7. Seeks the assistance of resource persons who are informed about and responsible for the instruction of students with various mental, physical, educational, and other special needs.
8. Assists in placement of students.
9. Cooperates with local career counseling and guidance personnel.
10. Assists all agricultural education students to make informed decisions regarding personal occupational goals in agriculture.
11. Assists all agricultural education students to develop personal training programs appropriate to their occupational goals in agriculture.
12. Provides related instruction with field, shop, laboratory, cooperative work, or other occupational experience that is appropriate to the career objectives of the student and as outlined within state course standards.

Terp Farm Positions

Terp Farm is excited to announce that we are now accepting applications for student staff positions for the 2023 season. If you would, please distribute the attached announcement and position description to students and colleagues to help get the word out. We will be accepting applications through March 10 and conducting interviews before students leave for Spring Break.

TERP FARM is the University’s own sustainable produce farm located 15 miles from campus at the University’s Central Maryland Research and Education Center, Upper Marlboro Facility. Established in 2014 as collaboration between the Department of Dining Services and the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, the farm provides fresh produce to the campus dining halls and food-insecure members of the campus community through donations to the UMD Campus Pantry. Additionally, the farm has served as a “living laboratory” for students of

the University to engage in practical farming applications and learn skills and concepts that are imperative to running a successful farming operation. The Terp Farm management team is seeking student staff members for employment on the farm for the 2023 season. The position runs from May 22, 2023 - August 25, 2023, with potential for continuation part-time in the

Fall 2023 semester. Wages start at $15/hr.

Eligibility: Successful candidates should consider themselves to be hard-working, self-motivated, detail oriented, and able to demonstrate good communication skills. It is very important to be willing to receive direction and have a strong work ethic in order to work on a farm. While having previous farming experience or outdoor jobs is generally preferred, it is not required. However it is essential that candidates are committed to vegetable farming and all that it requires, including being able to lift 50 lbs regularly, and work outside in all weather conditions from rainy days to high summer heat. Preference will be given to those candidates that have at least 3 months of previous farming experience. A valid Maryland driver’s

license is required, as well as your own means for commuting to and from the farm.

The Terp Farm Student Staff will support the Terp Farm Manager in the following aspects of farm operations, including:

● Production

o Field operations for vegetable production, including cultivation and tillage, bed preparation,

planting, fertilizing, pest and disease control, irrigation, mulching, trellising, and weeding.

o High tunnel operations, including hand-scale bed preparation, planting, trellising, pest and disease

control, irrigation, weeding, and maintenance of structures.

o Greenhouse operations, including soil mix preparations, seeding, thinning, environmental

monitoring, pest and disease control, and sanitation.

o Post-harvest operations including washing and packing, sanitation, pest monitoring,

record-keeping, and worker hygiene.

● Facilities Maintenance and Infrastructure

o Basic construction and site development projects such as building greenhouse benches and

spreading mulch and gravel.

o Basic maintenance of tools and equipment, including cleaning and sharpening, checking fluid

levels, and following proper storage procedures.

o Ground maintenance, including mowing, string trimming, and site cleanup.

● Recordkeeping

o Daily note-taking and assistance in maintaining farm log books for food safety and production

records.

Physical Demands/Work Environment:

● Occasional work must be performed outside of normal scheduled hours due to weather and other factors

● Hazardous materials - petroleum based fluids, exhaust, pesticides, and sanitation chemicals.

● Wear and work in Personal Protection Equipment (PPE)

● Working environment may have allergens—dust, mold, grasses, etc.

● Severe weather conditions, such as extreme hi/lo temperatures, strong wind, and rain.

● Heavy lifting - 40 to 50 lbs

Work Schedule: This position follows a typical 40 hour work week, 8 hours per day Monday through Friday,

with occasional adjustments to the schedule based on the needs of the farm.

Tree planting for the Chesapeake Bay Foundation

 My name is Hailey Papagjika and I am the Maryland Restoration Assistant Intern with the Chesapeake Bay Foundation. I am reaching out to let you know about multiple volunteer events that we have planned for the month of April.

On April 1st we will be planting 1,000 native trees and shrubs on seven acres of state park land in the Patuxent River Watershed. The location for the event is the Merkle Wildlife Sanctuary in Prince George's County. If you are interested in coming out to help, you can register through our website here. 

On April 15th we will be planting over 1,000 native trees and shrubs on approximately five acres on a farm in Frederick County close to Gathland State Park. If you are interested in coming out to help, you can register through our website here. 

On April 21st & 22nd we will be planting more than 1,000 native trees and shrubs on six acres in Frederick County to protect the Middle Creek tributary to Catoctin Creek, which flows into the Potomac River and ultimately the Chesapeake Bay. If you are interested in coming out to help, you can register through our website for Friday, the 21st and Saturday the 22nd.

Our goal in doing this is to create a buffer which will protect the waterway from runoff and contamination, as well as to encourage the community to be engaged and informed in the benefits of regenerative agriculture and the role it plays in improving soil and water quality.

 

On the event days, the holes for the trees will be pre-augured to ensure the planting goes as smoothly as possible, but they are big events that we could not complete without the assistance of people like you who are willing to give us a hand! 

Maryland Agricultural Education Foundation (MAEF) Scholarships

February 6th, 2023- The Maryland Agricultural Education Foundation (MAEF) is now accepting applications for the 2023 Academic and Seibel Scholarships.  

 

The recipients of the MAEF Academic Scholarship will receive $1,500 in support of their academic achievements and pursuit of a career in agricultural or Extension education. MAEF Academic Scholarships are open to rising junior or senior undergraduate or graduate students enrolled in majors leading to careers in agricultural education or Extension education. Qualified candidates should complete and submit their online application by April 1, 2023.    

   

The Seibel Scholarship is open to students pursuing a two-year or four-year degree enrolled in majors leading to careers in agriculture or agriculture education at a qualifying institution. Qualified candidates should complete and submit their online application by April 1, 2023.    

   

Dr. Ronald J. Seibel established this scholarship fund during his lifetime to support students seeking agricultural degrees or certificates. As a former educator and longtime director of the Institute of Applied Agriculture at the University of Maryland, Dr. Seibel was a passionate supporter of agricultural education.   

   

Both award announcements will be made by May 1, 2023.

Who we are:
Love & Carrots is DC’s foremost urban farming and edible landscaping company. We design, install and maintain organic urban farms, vegetable gardens, and native landscapes across DC, MD, and VA. Through our garden care & coaching program we provide expert garden maintenance, guidance, and education in almost 150 gardens every year, helping connect people to their food and inspiring local food production and farming inside the beltway. Since our inception in 2011 we've installed over 500 gardens and our clients include residents, local restaurants, and community organizations throughout the DMV.

The job:
We are seeking full or part-time landscape installation crew members to join our team.
Installation crew members work 10 hour days, 4 days/week (Monday - Thursday) during the regular season. 5 days/week in the winter.

Installation tasks Include:

• Landscape installation - planting, edging, pruning, etc. (excluding lawn care)
• Basic carpentry: building raised beds and trellises, simple fence assembly
• Loading/driving trucks
• Hauling mulch/soil/filling wheelbarrows
• Installing drip irrigation systems
• Planting vegetables, small perennials, trees and shrubs
• Digging post-holes
• Basic stepping stone pathways (dryset only)

Necessary Qualifications:

• The ability to lift, dig, haul and generally work hard.
• A valid driver's license and working personal vehicle required.
• Experience with carpentry
• The ability to work as part of a close knit team while following directions. Also, to work independently, take initiative, and lead as necessary.
• Attention to detail and organization

Preferred Experience in: (not required, but strongly favored)

• Hourly pay based on experience (starting at $16-$20/hr), plus a Signing Bonus

About the Mona Center Urban Farm

The Catholic Charities – Susan Denison Mona Center is an integrated multi-services facility that provides critical resources to the residents of Prince George’s County. In partnership with the University of Maryland and Luminis Healthcare (formerly Doctors Community Hospital), Catholic Charities offers comprehensive services focusing on health and wellness, feeding and nutrition, and legal services.

 

The urban farm was created on-site to facilitate community engagement and grow fresh produce for the residents of the neighborhood. The farm was started in 2019 and now consists of a pilot project of eighteen raised beds for vegetable production. With proven success, the project hopes to grow to occupy the full 1/3 acre of land available. 100% of the farm’s produce currently goes to the Catholic Charities Enterprise Kitchen, which prepares it into hot meals that are distributed for free to food-insecure residents in Washington, DC and Montgomery and Prince George’s Counties. As the farm and its outputs grow, the vegetables and herbs may be used in Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) and ProduceRx programs run by the Mona Center.

 

Position Description

The Urban Farm Coordinators work as a team of two to oversee day-to-day operations of the farm, including infrastructure planning, crop production, marketing, outreach, and educational programming. The Coordinators collaborate with Catholic Charities staff, Luminis Healthcare staff, and University of Maryland faculty advisors to bring farm projects and community events to fruition. The work may be divided as the Coordinators find appropriate; for example, one Coordinator may work primarily remotely on marketing, grant writing, and other tasks, while the other Coordinator is primarily responsible for on-site farm production and volunteer events. These are paid positions that may also be used to fulfill an academic internship requirement.

A $2,000 scholarship is available for undergraduate students in horticulture, who are residents of Southeastern US States (Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and West Virginia). USDA Foreign Agricultural Service FAS Diversity Fellowship Program

Philadelphia Society for Promoting Agriculture Scholarship

This annual award is designed to recognize outstanding students majoring in Horticulture or related fields who have a clear intent upon graduation from an undergraduate university of either pursuing a career in one the many branches of horticulture including enhancement of the environment, or of attending graduate school in one of these areas.

Amount of Award: The award will be in the amount of $1,500 and paid direct to the two selected individuals by September 1st 2022.

Eligibility: This award shall be presented to a full-time student in horticulture in their Junior or Senior year, in good academic standing with a GPA of 3.0 or better. Applicants must either live in DE, MD, NJ, or PA or go to a school in one of those four states in the PSPA service area. Students must be interested in employment in the horticulture industry or in furthering their education in horticulture or related fields. (Previous scholarship winners are ineligible to apply)

Requirement: As part of the application process, a one-page essay must be submitted that focuses on how you envision impacting the industry through your employment or graduate work in horticulture. Paid Student Summer Internship with UMD Department of Entomology

The University of Maryland Department of Entomology is seeking some motivated undergraduates with an interest in Biological Control, Field Agro-ecology and helping food insecure individuals to join the ecological pest management and applied ecology group for summer paid internship positions. Research prospects will include using cover crops and flowering plants to manipulate beneficial arthropods and suppress insect and weed pests in vegetable plantings. Work will consist also of research plot maintenance, arthropod and plant surveys, produce harvesting and donating fresh produce to organizations that help feed food insecure community members.

Strong commitment to field work and a desire to work as a team and help the less fortunate and remove weeds from research plots are essential as the job entails outside manual activities during the summer months. The ideal candidate will have some interest in field research, the great outdoors and have a valid driver license. 1) Joint Agro-Ecology Field and Science Communications Internship Opportunity
"We seek two students for a summer internship that offers a hybrid of scientific research and outreach and communications. The ideal candidates have strong writing and communications skills coupled with knowledge in environmental science and an interest in agricultural landscapes. This internship is funded through a National Fish and Wildlife Foundation Small Watershed Grant to explore how to restore agricultural fields that have been damaged by saltwater intrusion and sea-level rise to vibrant, thriving marshes full of healthy plants and animal species. It is being held in partnership with Agroecology Lab at the University of Maryland."

2) Thriving Agriculture Systems in Urbanized Landscapes Internship
"We seek undergraduate student applicants interested in working as an intern on a project that will require extensive research related to agriculture, urbanization, land use, food systems, and policies in Maryland over a twenty-year period. This internship is part of a five-year $9 million project, “Thriving Agricultural Systems in Urbanized Landscapes” funded by USDA’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA.) The student selected for this internship will work closely with interns at Penn State and Virginia Tech who are also working on the project."

The Urban Forester 1 (UF1) is responsible for the management and smooth execution of Casey Trees’ tree planting programs on both public and private lands. This incumbent fields and schedules tree planting and related consultations on a year-round basis with property owners and others, responds to referrals from local government, industry partners and others. The Urban Forester also coordinates spring, fall and winter tree plantings to flow seamlessly with other tree planting activities and events. Maryland Nursery, Landscape, and Greenhouse Association Scholarship

The Maryland Nursery, Landscape, and Greenhouse Association has announced the availability of several scholarships for college-aged horticulture students. The MNLGA Ornamental Horticulture Scholarship will award three $5,000 scholarships for eligible students in ornamental horticulture and landscape programs.

The University of Maryland Extension (UME) is seeking undergraduate students interested in careers in Extension and agriculture industries.
