Explore a Career in Consulting!

 

 

ICF’s ICmyFuture in Consulting Career Exploration program is an opportunity for undergraduate talent to gain exposure to careers in Consulting – from Climate Change and Resiliency to Human, People & Human Services (HPHS), to developing technologies and operations. We invite current undergraduate students to apply to this exploratory program, where participants will have the opportunity to learn from our professionals. If students are interested in applying to the program, they should submit their application responses HERE. 

 

PROGRAM OVERVIEW 

Join students from a wide variety of backgrounds and participate in a program where students will gain exposure to career pathways in Consulting at ICF; including but not limited to Consulting, Technology, Sales and Marketing. 

 

This program will be hosted virtually on the evening of April 24^th from 6:00-7:30pm EST. Virtual program components include: 

• Expert Insights: A closer look at the Consulting industry
• Social Impact Panel: Learn how ICF is supporting associates, communities, and the environment 
• Line of Business Panel Discussion: Explore our work, internship and career options in Consulting, STEM, Strategy, Sales & Marketing at ICF

Successful participants will be able to add the program to their resume stating they were “selected to participate in ICF’s consulting career exploratory program…”. Participants will be invited to attend ICF's Summer Development Series, and will be extended a first look at our 2025 summer internships opportunities and entry-level roles for December 2024 and May 2025 graduates that will be posted during the fall. This is a great opportunity for students interested in learning about different careers in consulting.

 

ELIGIBILITY 

ICmyFuture is open to all majors and academic years. Students with backgrounds that are traditionally underrepresented in consulting and technology are encouraged to apply. This includes, but is not limited to, students who identify as female, BIPOC, LGBTQ+; students with disabilities; veterans; or those from socio-economically challenged backgrounds. All students enrolled in some college or undergraduate degree program are eligible to apply.

The Department of Natural Resources leads Maryland in securing a sustainable future for our environment, society, and economy by preserving, protecting, restoring, and enhancing the State’s natural resources. Speak with representatives from 10 different DNR units to learn about what they do and the types of positions they are hiring for.

International Park(ing) Day Comes to UMD

Come visit our pop-up parks this Friday, September 15, across from the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center on Stadium Drive, where we’re transforming standard street parking into creative installations designed by: the Student Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architecture (SASLA), the Student Planning Association (SPA), Terps for Bike Lanes, SustainableUMD, and the DOTS Sustainability Team.

For 18 years and counting, International Park(ing) Day has inspired people all around the world to reimagine the public spaces we lose from on-street parking by temporarily activating parking lots with natural elements, activities, enlightening displays, and opportunities to connect with the UMD student and staff creators to spark conversations around sustainability and community-building on-campus. You won’t want to miss it! 

Tree planting for the Chesapeake Bay Foundation

 My name is Hailey Papagjika and I am the Maryland Restoration Assistant Intern with the Chesapeake Bay Foundation. I am reaching out to let you know about multiple volunteer events that we have planned for the month of April.

On April 1st we will be planting 1,000 native trees and shrubs on seven acres of state park land in the Patuxent River Watershed. The location for the event is the Merkle Wildlife Sanctuary in Prince George's County. If you are interested in coming out to help, you can register through our website here. 

On April 15th we will be planting over 1,000 native trees and shrubs on approximately five acres on a farm in Frederick County close to Gathland State Park. If you are interested in coming out to help, you can register through our website here. 

On April 21st & 22nd we will be planting more than 1,000 native trees and shrubs on six acres in Frederick County to protect the Middle Creek tributary to Catoctin Creek, which flows into the Potomac River and ultimately the Chesapeake Bay. If you are interested in coming out to help, you can register through our website for Friday, the 21st and Saturday the 22nd.

Our goal in doing this is to create a buffer which will protect the waterway from runoff and contamination, as well as to encourage the community to be engaged and informed in the benefits of regenerative agriculture and the role it plays in improving soil and water quality.

 

On the event days, the holes for the trees will be pre-augured to ensure the planting goes as smoothly as possible, but they are big events that we could not complete without the assistance of people like you who are willing to give us a hand!

New Courses on Climate Change Education and Mitigation

The reACT team has received funding and approval for a new curriculum of lab courses related to climate change education and mitigation at both the reACT and LEAFhouse structures on campus. I have attached a full course list below. 

Students are welcomed and encouraged to attend these classes, where they will have the opportunity to influence the future of that space through hands-on projects and applied research.

Mary Wilson Animal Care and Conservation Scholar Program

Mary Wilson was a senior zookeeper at the Maryland Zoo in Baltimore where she worked for 38 years. She was the first African-American woman zookeeper at the zoo. In honor of her legacy, the Maryland Zoo has created the Mary Wilson Animal Care and Conservation Scholar Program for a local black, indigenous, or person of color (BIPOC) student with a passion for animals and an interest in a wildlife or conservation career. This intern will be paired with an experienced zookeeper to learn first-hand about working with animals and Zoo visitors. The Scholar Program will allow a student to experience the daily work of an Animal Keeper, with additional exposure to other departments, which might include the Animal, Hospital, Commissary, and Education, providing a unique insight into the Zoo world. A research project throughout the six weeks will round out the learning experience. Upon successful completion of the program, the Scholar will be knowledgeable about the benefits and demands of various wildlife careers, and will have valuable hands-on experience in animal care.

The Mary Wilson Scholar Program is designed to provide an understanding of the zoo field as well as basic skills for individuals interested in pursuing a career in animal science, biology, ecology, conservation, veterinary medicine, and/or zoology. Candidates with limited prior work experience in animal care but a demonstrated passion for the field, are highly encouraged to apply. The Scholar will receive weekly feedback from their mentor, and will get a written evaluation on general performance and the research project at the end of the Scholar Program.

EarthFest 2022

EarthFest is a fun outdoor Earth Day festival that will include interactive exhibits and activities from student groups, campus departments, and more! There will be upcycling crafts, a photo booth, activities, raffles, food, and more! It will take place on Wednesday, April 20th from 11am-3pm at Hornbake Plaza. Register to host a table here by Fri, April 15th.

The Office of Sustainability also compiles and promotes campus Earth Day events throughout the month of April at earthmonth.umd.edu. Smithsonian Women’s Committee Diversity Internship in Conservation Biology

The Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute's Center for Species Survival is accepting applicants for conservation biology internships. Headquartered in Front Royal, Virginia, SCBI plays a leading role in the Smithsonian's global efforts to save wildlife species from extinction and train future generations of conservationists. Since 1983, Center for Species Survival scientists have pioneered innovative approaches to solve wildlife conservation problems around the world, with the goal of avoiding extinction and creating methods to sustain viable wildlife populations in zoos and the wild.

This is an opportunity for undergraduate and graduate (first year) students to gain experience in conservation biology with a special emphasis in reproductive science and its role in conservation. Students will gain first-hand experience in tackling conservation issues and fundamental biological questions while working alongside highly experienced researchers from SCBI’s science directorate. They will be mentored in the scientific process, including defining their own research project, robust record keeping, data and statistical analyses, data presentation and a final scientific paper.

COG’s Chesapeake Bay and Water Resources Policy Committee (CBPC) Paper Competition

The COG’s Chesapeake Bay and Water Resources Policy Committee (CBPC) Paper Competition is open to undergraduate and graduate students! The CBPC is a committee of elected officials and water utilities and their members are seeking to engage with researchers on the intersection of science and policy. A prize of $500 will be awarded to the top paper.

We encourage students to embrace this competition and submit a 5-page paper on a range of topics, including climate resiliency, sustainability, or diversity, equity and inclusion. An illustrative list of topics and details are in the link below. The idea is for students to be concisely present policy recommendations to address a water quality issue, and to have a chance to engage with elected officials. Students are asked to submit their topic of interest by 2/28 and papers are due in late April, so the submissions is fast approaching.

Russell Brinsfield Agro-Ecology Summer Internship Program

The Harry R. Hughes Center for Agro-Ecology, Inc. (Hughes Center) and the Agriculture Law Education Initiative (ALEI) are seeking law and undergraduate student applicants interested in careers in agriculture, environmental conservation, forestry, and/or policy for the 2022 Russell Brinsfield Agro-Ecology Summer Internship program. Multiple students will be selected for this eight-week internship, which includes a competitive salary and the opportunity to interact with leaders from the agricultural and environmental communities as well as state agencies. The internship will begin with an orientation session at Wye Research Center and the interns will attend periodic meetings at Wye. The remainder of the time, the interns will work virtually or attend meetings offsite.

The internship will introduce you to a number of complex natural resource issues, including nutrient management for the Chesapeake Bay, forestry, and local food production. During the course of the internship, you will meet diverse stakeholders and engage in the complex interaction between the agricultural and the environmental conservation and policy communities. You will be introduced to legislators and staff at state agencies as you work to resolve challenges. The internship is funded by organizations seeking to build leaders who are able to appreciate all sides of complex issues and develop solutions that consider the needs of industry, environment, economic, and policymakers.
