The National Science Foundation's Graduate Research Fellowship Program (NSF GRFP) provides 3 years of full support for PhD studies, with an annual living expenses stipend of $37,000. You can visit last year's NSF solicitation website by clicking here. The revised solicitation for the 2026 award cycle has not yet been published - we will provide updates through our ELMS resource site (sign up above).

The UMD National Scholarships Office has an ELMS resource site to help you plan effectively for your NSF GRFP application. All current UMD undergraduates, alumni, and 1st year grad students planning to apply this autumn 2025 will benefit from using this resource. This site includes a recently recorded information session presentation.

Eligibility: You must be a US citizen or Permanent Resident to apply for the NSF graduate research fellowship. You must be applying for graduate studies in an NSF supported field. Love & Carrots Garden Installation Crew Member Job Opening

Who we are:
Love & Carrots is DC’s foremost urban farming and edible landscaping company. We design, install and maintain organic urban farms, vegetable gardens, and native landscapes across DC, MD, and VA. Through our garden care & coaching program we provide expert garden maintenance, guidance, and education in almost 150 gardens every year, helping connect people to their food and inspiring local food production and farming inside the beltway. Since our inception in 2011 we've installed over 500 gardens and our clients include residents, local restaurants, and community organizations throughout the DMV.

The job:
We are seeking full or part-time landscape installation crew members to join our team.
Installation crew members work 10 hour days, 4 days/week (Monday - Thursday) during the regular season. 5 days/week in the winter.

Installation tasks Include:

• Landscape installation - planting, edging, pruning, etc. (excluding lawn care)
• Basic carpentry: building raised beds and trellises, simple fence assembly
• Loading/driving trucks
• Hauling mulch/soil/filling wheelbarrows
• Installing drip irrigation systems
• Planting vegetables, small perennials, trees and shrubs
• Digging post-holes
• Basic stepping stone pathways (dryset only)

Necessary Qualifications:

• The ability to lift, dig, haul and generally work hard.
• A valid driver's license and working personal vehicle required.
• Experience with carpentry
• The ability to work as part of a close knit team while following directions. Also, to work independently, take initiative, and lead as necessary.
• Attention to detail and organization

Preferred Experience in: (not required, but strongly favored)

• Landscaping
• Carpentry
• Gardening/farming 

Compensation:

• Hourly pay based on experience (starting at $16-$20/hr), plus a Signing Bonus
• Full benefits package: health and dental insurance, 401k, and 3 weeks+ paid time off.
• Opportunity for seasonal bonuses, based on performance.
• Our office/headquarters has an on-site vegetable garden for staff use!

What Happens Next?

• Enroll in our mandatory online orientation. Deadline to complete orientation is Tuesday, April 12th @ 11:59pm.
• Review the list of professionals available to you and determine who you would like to preference on your application! Applications will be sent on Wednesday, April 13th for students who completed the mandatory orientation (linked above).
• Complete the application by Monday, April 18th @ 11:59pm and the IFAD team will start matching students with hosts the next day and throughout the week.

Urban Forester Position at Casey Trees

The Urban Forester 1 (UF1) is responsible for the management and smooth execution of Casey Trees’ tree planting programs on both public and private lands. This incumbent fields and schedules tree planting and related consultations on a year-round basis with property owners and others, responds to referrals from local government, industry partners and others. The Urban Forester also coordinates spring, fall and winter tree plantings to flow seamlessly with other tree planting activities and events. Smithsonian Women’s Committee Diversity Internship in Conservation Biology

The Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute's Center for Species Survival is accepting applicants for conservation biology internships. Headquartered in Front Royal, Virginia, SCBI plays a leading role in the Smithsonian's global efforts to save wildlife species from extinction and train future generations of conservationists. Since 1983, Center for Species Survival scientists have pioneered innovative approaches to solve wildlife conservation problems around the world, with the goal of avoiding extinction and creating methods to sustain viable wildlife populations in zoos and the wild.

This is an opportunity for undergraduate and graduate (first year) students to gain experience in conservation biology with a special emphasis in reproductive science and its role in conservation. Students will gain first-hand experience in tackling conservation issues and fundamental biological questions while working alongside highly experienced researchers from SCBI’s science directorate. They will be mentored in the scientific process, including defining their own research project, robust record keeping, data and statistical analyses, data presentation and a final scientific paper.

Agriculture/Business Internship at Bennett Orchards

Bennett Orchards is a sixth generation family-run peach and blueberry orchard in Frankford, Delaware, located just 7 miles from Bethany Beach. They are looking for summer employees/interns interested in working with agriculture, pick your own, and farmers markets along the Delmarva Coast which provide a great insight into the grass roots running of a business and also into agriculture. They are flexible and anyone interested/majoring in agriculture, agribusiness, business, economics, entrepreneurship, marketing, management, operations management and statistics would be great candidates and gain valuable experience in these fields. If your major or area of expertise falls outside of these we still have opportunities available. All positions would be flexible paid internships starting at $15/hr and would be from the middle of June until the end of August. A great way to spend summer at the beach while earning income and gaining valuable business/agricultural experience from a sixth generation Delaware Family Farm growing peaches and blueberries.

Intern for a Day Spring 2022

Intern for a Day, through the University of Maryland University Career Center & The President's Promise, connects current undergraduate UMD students with alumni, parents, and employers for short-term job shadowing opportunities to explore potential career fields. They typically place 300-400 students with professionals each semester!

Due to the omicron variant, they will offer two options for Intern for a Day this semester:

• In-person job shadowing: half day or full-day experiences for students (seeking professionals locally in DMV-area).
• Virtual informational interviews: 1-hour virtual informational interviews to give students good insight into your background, current work and industry (seeking professionals globally).

How Does Intern for a Day Work?
UMD students complete a mandatory online orientation to prepare them for the experience and apply to the program with their top professionals of interest (based on the description you provide!)
The University Career Center matches the students with the professionals most of interest to the student and makes the introduction. Matching is expected to be complete by mid-March 2022.

Founded in Washington D.C. in 1921, Argyle moved to its current location in Silver Spring, MD in 1945. The course was designed by Perc LeDuc, then a member of the Club. Argyle is known for having some of the area’s top golfers who consistently compete in state and national amateur championships.

Argyle Country Club is seeking a highly motivated Grounds Manager/Horticulturist to join their team. The Grounds Manager/Horticulturist will be responsible for the maintenance of all ornamental beds throughout the property which includes the clubhouse, pool, tennis facility, and golf course. The ideal candidate will possess the vision and ability to elevate the quality of the plantings at Argyle. This position will report to and work closely with the Director of Greens & Grounds.
