Ocean City Golf Club located in Ocean City, Maryland is seeking a Senior Assistant Superintendent.  The position will work closely with Golf Course Superintendent, Mike Salvio, to oversee the 36-hole facility.  The role is designed for a succession plan towards becoming the Golf Course Superintendent at Ocean City Golf Club.

The Washington National Cathedral, along with St. Albans School, National Cathedral School, and Beauvoir, The National Cathedral Elementary School, is located on a campus of 57 acres of landscaped grounds in the heart of the nation’s Capital. This internship provides instruction and hands-on athletic field maintenance experience working on four high school fields. Under the Assistant Director, interns will participate in implementing turf maintenance program for the Cathedral Close and work with the groundskeeper/turf crew to ensure superior turf and proper maintenance. Activities are coordinated with/between the athletic departments to ensure playing surfaces are game ready. Technical assistance provided on all proper turf practices and overseeing the IPM program for turf.

Interns will work Monday through Friday from 6:00 am to 2:30 pm.

Preference will be given to applicants who are pursuing a degree in turfgrass management, horticulture, sport management, or a related field. Applicants must be able to work outside in inclement weather such as rain and extreme heat, must be able to perform physical work including bending, stooping, reaching, and standing for extended periods of time, must be able to lift, carry, and push at least 30 lbs. Housing is not provided and there is no housing allowance. The internship is 12 weeks, with flexible start and end dates. May through August preferred.

Prairie Dunes CC and Ballyneal Golf Club Internship

The maintenance departments at Prairie Dunes CC and Ballyneal Golf Club are continuing to offer a dual internship program this 2024 season. Accepted applicants would be splitting their time between the two clubs over their internship period.

This internship gives students the chance to experience maintenance practices at two different style clubs. Prairie Dunes was built in 1937 and sits on sandy-loam soil vs Ballyneal which was built in 2005 and sits on hundreds of feet of sand.

Through a 3, 6, or 9 month internship, students will be able to experience differences between toro and rainbird irrigation systems, high disease pressure vs minimal disease pressure, fescue/bent management vs rye/blue/bent management and cart traffic vs no cart traffic.

An hourly wage that includes housing, uniforms, and playing privileges will be provided as a part of the compensation package.

The Ridgewood Country Club Interns

The Ridgewood Country Club is seeking student interns for the 2024 golf season. We are a 27-hole A.W. Tillinghast designed club located in northeast New Jersey, just twenty minutes from New York City. The golf course is set on two hundred and forty-five acres, has a thirty-eight-person maintenance staff and will have an operating budget of $3,800,000 in 2024. We have hosted several national professional tournaments including the Ryder Cup and Fed Ex Cup events and are ranked as one of the top 100 courses in the United States. In 2022, RCC hosted its second U.S. Amateur, won by Sam Bennett.

 

While interning at RCC, the student will have the opportunity to share their experiences with six other people who are devoted to golf course management. Beside myself, we have four assistant superintendents and two student interns. There will be regular turf discussions, seminars, field trips to various industry sites in the Met area and tournament volunteer opportunities.

 

We have a long history of hiring our assistants from our intern pool and each student will be evaluated for such a position and possibly offered a job at the end of their stay.

 

We are looking for students who could work through at least early to mid-August. Any student wishing to take off a semester and experience the maintenance process from the first day of spring cleanup, through the summer and even later, would certainly be encouraged to do so.

This is a paid internship, with the opportunity to earn college credit. 40+ hours including nights, weekends, and holidays. The ideal candidate is interested in a career in professional sports with an emphasis in Turf, Grounds, Landscape, Irrigation and Operations and is a current student or recent graduate of 2 or 4-year turfprogram.

Duties: Assists with the day-to-day maintenance tasks of baseball fields, common areas and facility grounds at Ed Smith Stadium and the Buck O’Neill Baseball Complex for spring events including spring training games, practices, camps, and special events including, but not limited to:

• Field set up and preparation for spring training camps and games including dragging infield skins, mound and homeplate preparation, clay moisture management, field lining

• Infield skin maintenance techniques such as nail dragging, rolling, conditioner applications, edging

• Mound and homeplate repair and maintenance

• Painting of Orioles logo and foul lines

• Maintaining all landscaped areas including plants, trees, and shrubs through pruning, mulching, trimming, pesticide and fertilizer applications

• Turf maintenance tasks including but not limited to mowing, edging, raking, weeding, and trimming

• Operation of hand and power tools to complete necessary tasks

• Weather forecasting and impacts on field, practices, camps and games. Assist with tarp as necessary

• Fertilizing and pesticide applications

• Irrigation maintenance and repair

• Perform cultural practices such as aerifying, verticutting, and topdressing

• Inspect, clean, and help maintain equipment to ensure safe and proper operating conditions

• Must be able to consistently lift up tp 50 lbs., occasionally up to 100 lbs.

• Works outdoors in adverse conditions

Skills/Qualifications Required:

- Recent graduate or current enrollment in 2 or 4 year turf program

- Experience in turf, landscape, or golf preferred, but not required

- Must be reliable, punctual, courteous, have good listening and multi-tasking skills

Burning Tree Club Positions

Burning Tree Club, founded in 1922, is an 18-hole private golf club located just inside the Capital Beltway of Washington, DC originally designed by C.H. Alison of Colt, Mackenzie, and Alison. Burning Tree Club is currently ranked #4 in Golf Digest's 2021-2022 Best-In-State Rankings in Maryland. The club underwent a restoration project in 2019-2020 by renowned architect Gil Hanse consisting of green and fairway expansions, rebuilt bunkers with Better Billy Bunkers, new practice facility and installing a new RainBird irrigation system. The historic club has 16 greens that are native soil from 1922 and 6 renovated greens that are sand based, all of which are 007 Bentgrass. Fairways were renovated in 2015, converting the surfaces to a blend of 007 and SR1150 Bentgrass. Tees are 007 Bentgrass and Penncross. MAAGCS Scholarship

1. Applicant must have completed at least 1 year as an employee of a Mid-Atlantic Association of Golf Course Superintendents (MAAGCS) member.

2. Applicant must be enrolled in at least one class in a turfgrass management curriculum. Note: Online turf programs are also eligible.

3. In order for the applicant to be considered for the scholarship, he/she must completely fill out the application form, satisfying all of the REQUIREMENTS as described below.
