Graduate School Programs at Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science

Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science (RSMAS) at the University of Miami is now accepting applications for the Spring and Fall 2021 semesters for the following degrees: PhD (fully funded), Master of Science (MS), and Master of Professional Science (MPS). At RSMAS, PhD students are supported as Graduate Research Assistants during their tenure (typically 5 years). These assistantships provide an annual salary of $30,312 (USD), and tuition and health insurance are provided. A list of PhD Assistantships are available here: https://graduate.rsmas.miami.edu/admissions/phd-assistanships/index.html. More assistantships will post to this site on a weekly basis; therefore, we encourage you to review this site regularly and contact faculty directly. Please be advised, select faculty do not list their assistantships online, and instead, only consider individuals who submitted an application for an assistantship with their lab/office. To increase your chances for an assistantship, apply by December 1, 2020. Fall 2021 applications received prior to January 1, 2021 will be reviewed. The GRE has been waived for all PhD, MS, and MPS programs.

MPS students enroll in the same courses as PhD and MS students, and patriciate in an internship and/or research in the field in lieu of a traditional thesis/dissertation which is required for MS/PhD students. Past MPS students engaged in internships with host organizations such as NOAA, the National Park Service, and U.S. and international NGOs to name a few. For the MPS program, 94% of graduates secure employment in their field within 6 months of receiving their degree. MPS degree has rolling admission until June for international applicants and July for U.S. citizens and permanent residents. PhD/MS applicants who want to be considered for the MPS program in addition to PhD or MS, can do so at no extra cost by checking the box for “Master of Professional Science” on the application form.  This allows an individual to apply for multiple graduate programs at RSMAS for one application fee. A partial-tuition waiver (merit-based waiver) will be considered for applicants who meet our GPA-only or GRE + GPA criteria. The MPS program has 14 tracks (area of concentration) below:

In an effort to support the University's diversity, equity and inclusion efforts, the Master of Professional Science program at the Rosenstiel School now offers 4 Rosenstiel Opportunity Scholarships. This scholarship provides high-achieving students from historically underserved or underrepresented populations, and/or socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds, to earn a master’s degree from the Rosenstiel School at no cost or significantly reduced tuition cost (student fees still apply). Each scholarship consists of 24 credits and allows recipients to earn an additional 6 credits (maximum) through the MPS program’s merit-based waiver. Completion of 30-credits total is required for master’s degree at UM; therefore, scholarship recipients are eligible to complete the MPS program at no or significantly reduced tuition cost: scholarship + waiver (the latter if eligible). Scholarship recipients will be notified in March of 2021 for Fall 2021 start.
