Second Chance Wildlife Center, a beloved and respected 501(c)3 wildlife rehabilitation facility in Gaithersburg, Maryland, has an immediate opening for up to three paid internships for qualified candidates. Selected individuals must be willing to commit to a minimum term of five (5) months and at least 20 hours per week of service-learning at our facility.


Second Chance Wildlife Center is open seven days a week, including holidays, and we will work with you to determine a schedule that meet your needs and ours. Selected interns in this program are eligible to receive a stipend of $250 per month for 20 hours per week. Additionally, these interns will receive extensive hands-on training in all aspects of wildlife rehabilitation, a letter of recommendation from our Clinic Director (if performance merits one), a certificate of completion for our internship program, and the rewards of learning from skilled experts while providing a critically important service to native wildlife, migratory birds, and to compassionate “rescuers" across Maryland and beyond.


The duties of these specific interns include:

  • Assisting in initial intake and exams of patients. 

  • Preparing and administering food and some medications;

  • Maintaining prescribed diets for patients;

  • Providing daily care and observation of patients in indoor and outdoor enclosures;

  • Updating patient health databases;

  • Cleaning and upkeep of enclosures and our facility;

  • Potentially providing basic first aid, therapeutic, and rehabilitative care to animals;

  • Potentially assisting our veterinarian and Clinic Director with medical procedures;

  • Monitoring levels of supplies;

  • Assisting in the release of healthy animals back to the wild; 

  • Performing other duties or responsibilities, as assigned.


Qualifications and Requirements:

At least one (1) year of experience/education in animal care and the desire to explore a career in wildlife and/or animal care is preferred. Currently working in the animal care field or studying in a related field is a plus;


Willing and able to perform physically demanding tasks (lifting sacks of food, moving and cleaning enclosures, releasing animals back to the wild, etc.);


Attention to detail, and ability to follow our written protocols to the letter – including our strict health and safety policies including daily temperature checks, wearing of masks, frequent hand washing, social distancing (as possible), assisting in sanitizing tools, equipment, surfaces, etc. 

This work requires someone who will work collaboratively and successfully with people in a wide array of personalities and roles (leadership, staff, volunteers and other interns, animal services officers, and members of the public) in a fast-paced and, sometimes, stressful environment. It also requires professionalism, empathy, attention to detail, and tremendous dedication in order to maintain our organization’s stellar reputation for quality animal care. 


We will provide valuable training as needed and, therefore, require a minimum commitment of 5 months and 20 hours per week.

UMD Agricultural Technician Lead

UMD is looking to fill a position for an Agricultural Technician Lead. Responsibilities include assisting facility manager in the day to day operations and maintenance of farm and specialized agricultural research equipment. They will work with manager to coordinate activities for researchers and others performing research and extension activities at the facility. They will also carry out field work – tilling, planting, fertilizing, spraying, harvesting – for traditional and non-traditional agricultural crops and research plots.

2021 Ray Diversity Conservation and Clean Energy Fellowships

Inspired by efforts to increase racial diversity in environmentally-related sectors, the Roger Arliner Young (RAY) Diversity Fellowship Program supports two cohorts of Fellows per year: RAY Conservation Fellows and RAY Clean Energy Fellows. The RAY Fellowship Program aims to increase and facilitate conservation, energy efficiency, and renewable energy-related career pathways for emerging leaders of color. The RAY Fellowship Program is a two-year paid fellowship designed to equip recent college graduates with the tools, experiences, support, and community they need to become leaders in the conservation and clean energy sectors—one that, in our visions of the future, fully represents, includes, and is led by the diverse communities, perspectives, and experiences of the United States.

Managed by the Environmental Leadership Program (ELP), the RAY Conservation Fellowship and RAY Clean Energy Fellowship provide first-time career access opportunities for recent college graduates who do not have previous professional experience or a graduate degree. RAY Conservation Fellows are placed within one of our 'Conservation Member Organizations' for a two-year paid fellowship position, with the resources and support to develop experiences that will launch them onto a path of career growth in conservation. Likewise, RAY Clean Energy Fellows are placed within one of our ‘Clean Energy Member Organizations’ for a similar two-year paid fellowship position, with similar resources and support to develop experiences that will launch them onto a path of career growth in energy-efficiency or renewable energy.

The scholarships were created to help deserving students manage costs associated with college and will each provide between $500 and $2,000 to students during 2021. These scholarships recognize the sizable contribution of time and energy that students contribute to the campus community through their service.

Delmarva Chicken Association Scholarship

Delmarva Chicken Association has opened the application period for its 2021 College Scholarship Program. Applications are being accepted for undergraduate scholarships of $2,000 and graduate-degree scholarships of $3,000. Complete applications for these scholarships must be received by DCA no later than 4:30 p.m. on Friday, April 9, 2021.

Career opportunities in the chicken industry extend far beyond jobs in processing plants or on farms. Students majoring in accounting, engineering, marketing, veterinary science, nutrition, genetics, chemistry, environmental science, computer science, and many other areas of study will find their skills in demand in a chicken career.

Each applicant must be a student in good standing at an accredited institution of higher learning within the United States, or in the case of graduating high school seniors, accepted to an accredited institution within the United States. Two Positions Available at Deep Roots Farm

Deep Roots Farm is a small, regenerative, woman of color owned and operated farm located in Upper Marlboro and Brandywine, Maryland. They grow vegetables, herbs, fruit and flowers, and raise chickens for eggs and meat. Their farm is two years old at this location, and they are still establishing their infrastructure and developing their farm systems to increase their operational efficiencies. They sell at three farmers markets in DC and offer a Community Supported Agriculture program (CSA) with home delivery in DC. This farm is their effort to form a community space for like minded citizens to ensure food stability and long-term security for all members of the community. They are an inclusive community who believe in worker's rights, animal welfare, sustainable environmentalism, and the power of hard work and kindness! 

Available Positions
Wash Pack Lead 
The wash pack is what they call the central processing unit of their operation. Field harvested crops are transported to the wash pack building (barn) to be sorted, washed, weighed, packed and stored. Experience working on a farm is required. This is a full time, year-round position. The ideal candidate must be extremely organized, detailed oriented and consistently dependable. Ability to manage a crew, work early hours 5 days a week, identify quality vegetables based on farm standards is needed. This position requires standing for extended periods of time. Ability to maintain records on a computer, passionate about sustainable agriculture. Ideal candidates will be able to commit to the entire season as a full-time employee.

Field Crew 
Looking for highly self-motivated individuals to join their field crew. Responsibilities include: transplanting, harvesting, seeding, irrigating, cultivating, operating machinery, trellising and more. Must be able to work in all weather conditions outdoors and in a greenhouse. A positive attitude goes a long way, ability to manage time and be consistently organized, follow directions and think critically in all situations. Assist with daily poultry chores, including coop maintenance, pasture management, egg collection and other livestock tasks. Help with CSA packing, and distribution of shares, following all food safety standards and ensuring food quality. Must be able to comfortably lift and move 50lbs. A valid driver's license with a clean driving record. Must be authorized to work in the U.S. 

Season
Their farm produces vegetables year-round. This position is full time (40-50 hrs/weekly) from Mid - March to Mid-December. There is an option to work year-round. 

Compensation
$12 -$15/hr (depending on experience), team members that commit to the full season will receive 40 hrs of paid time off and a weekly CSA vegetable share.

2021 Maryland Farm Bureau Scholarships

Maryland Farm Bureau (MDFB) is offering five $2,000 scholarships for the 2020-2021 academic year. Applicants must be high school seniors starting college in the fall of 2021 or full-time college students at any accredited community college or four-year institution. Applicants, or their parents/guardians, must be members of Maryland Farm Bureau. Three of the scholarships will be awarded to students pursuing academic disciplines in food, agriculture, and/or natural resources. The remaining two scholarships are open to students in any academic discipline.  

Scholarship recipients will be selected by a designated committee of the Maryland Farm Bureau. To apply, students must apply online via the official application website. The application includes the following essay question to be answered by each applicant:

International Agriculture Speaker Series

AGNR's Catherine M. Brinkley Fund Loan for Maryland Residents

We are still accepting applications for the Catherine M. Brinkley Fund which provides interest-free loans to students who are legal residents of Maryland pursuing majors in the College of Agriculture & Natural Resources. Students may download the application. The Office of Financial Aid determines eligibility and award distribution and you must have submitted the FAFSA.

To be eligible, students must:

  • Be enrolled in a major in the College of AGNR
  • Have submitted a FAFSA to the University

Loan terms are:

  • Amount is not to exceed the limit on financial need determined by your FAFSA application.
  • Repayment begins 9 months after ceasing to be at least a half-time student at the University of Maryland and ending 10 years later.
  • Monthly payments for the first two years of repayment will be $25.
  • The remaining payments will be fully amortized over the final eight years.
  • If the loan is not paid in full by 10 years, a 5% annual finance charge will be assessed on the unpaid balance.
  • Revenue from loan repayments will be returned to this fund to assist other students in achieving their academic goals.

American Floral Endowment Scholarships in Floriculture and Horticulture

Awarding scholarships for floriculture and horticulture students is a primary function of AFE. We understand the financial burden students face and are doing our part to help!

AFE has 24 scholarships awarded annually. Online applications and supporting documents are due by May 1 each year.

THE DEADLINE TO APPLY IS FEBRUARY 28, 2021.

 

This horticulture scholarship is open to students who have completed the 2nd/Sophomore year of undergraduate study. The applicant must be attending an accredited college or university in the United States and have achieved a grade point average of 3.2 or above.

 

The scholarship award of $10,500 will be made to the student who plans a career in horticulture and related disciplines. The award will be sent directly to the student’s bursar account for payment toward tuition and books.

 

Preference will be given to applicants who demonstrate exceptional dedication to horticulture and whose career goals may involve work in areas such as teaching/research, the public or nonprofit sector, or sustainable agriculture.

The 2021 Accelerating a Generation Syngenta Scholarship 
Deadline January 14, 2021 

The application period is open for the annual Syngenta Accelerating a Generation (AG) Scholarship program for the 2021 academic year, which is available to university students nationwide. Students currently pursuing bachelor’s or associate degrees in crop-related disciplines are eligible to apply.

Applicants must be U.S. residents enrolled as of spring 2021 in an accredited agriculture program at a land-grant university. All U.S. states, territories and the District of Columbia are included in the program.

You can apply to be considered for one of six awards, each worth $2,500, by completing the application on the FFA® Scholarship Portal. Both FFA members and non-members are eligible. If you win, you can designate an agriculture-related non-profit for a $500 donation.

Public Horticulture Internship - State Arboretum of Virginia

 

Public Horticulture Internship

Description

 

The State Arboretum of Virginia, located at the University of Virginia’s Blandy Experimental Farm in Boyce, VA is offering a 10-week internship in Public Horticulture to begin approximately May 20, 2019 and end approximately July 26, 2019. Start and end dates are negotiable.

 

Interns will gain experience assisting with the care and maintenance of the Perennial Gardens and Native Plant Trail. Activities within these areas will include routine care (weeding, mulching, and planting), removal of invasive plants, plant records management, and more. The intern will have the opportunity to assist with Summer Camp for rising second through eighth graders. Approximately three weeks of the internship will be working with Environmental Education staff and camp attendees. Other projects will be developed as time allows.

 

The intern will have access to summer public programs free of charge, the library collections, and will work closely with various members of the arboretum staff and volunteers.

 

The Public Horticulture Intern will receive a stipend of $4000 paid in two installments during the program. Dormitory-style housing is available on site.

 

The State Arboretum of Virginia (also known as the Orland E. White Arboretum) occupies the central 172 acres of Blandy Experimental Farm. Started in the 1930s, it contains over 5000 woody trees and shrubs from around the world. It is a reference garden for the Southeast Region of the American Conifer Society and includes the American Boxwood Society's Memorial Garden. In addition to the woody collection, herbaceous collections include the Nancy Larrick Crosby Native Plant Trail, Herb, and Pollination Gardens. The Maryland Summer Scholars Program (MSS) provides opportunities for University of Maryland, College Park (UMD) undergraduates to spend much of the summer working closely with faculty mentors on ambitious research, scholarly, or artistic projects. The MSS program provides awards of $3,000 to approximately 25-30 undergraduates each summer.

Eligibility: You are eligible to apply for an MSS award: if you have earned 12 or more UMD course credits (not including AP or IB credits) by the date of the application deadline; if you have a cumulative UMD GPA of 3.40 or higher by the date of the application deadline; and if you expect to receive your undergraduate degree no earlier than December 2021. All academic majors are eligible.

Application Deadline: The deadline to apply for summer 2021 awards will be 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, February 14, 2021. It is important that candidates begin developing their proposals as soon as possible.

Maryland Summer Scholars (MSS) may conduct their summer research on the College Park campus or elsewhere in the U.S. or abroad as required by the nature of the project. Students whose projects require travel for an extended period of time to off campus locations (not to include regular commuting) may submit a travel supplement request as directed in the online application form. Travel supplements will not exceed $1,000.

National Association of Agricultural Educators Internships

The National Association of Agricultural Educators (NAAE), based in Lexington, KY,  is offering two Communications internships and one Professional Development internship for the summer of 2021.

The Communications internships would be suitable for any of our Agricultural Communications and Leadership students. The Professional Development internship seeks a rising junior or senior (or above) pursuing an agricultural education major.
