Summer Horticulture Internship at Washington National Cathedral


Apply to be a Peer Mentor for the AgDiscovery 2022 Summer Program

Ag Discovery 2022 is seeking qualified and exemplary students to fill the position of Ag Discovery Peer Mentor. Ag Discovery Peer Mentors assist Ag Discovery student participants during the 3-week program from July 10– July 29, 2022. Peer Mentors will receive a stipend and are included on all program field trips. In previous years, such field trips included Brookside Gardens, and National Zoo, Smithsonian Natural History Museum, Capitol Hill, and USDA/APHIS research facilities. The 2021 program was in virtual format due to COVID-19, so there were no field trips...but we hope to have planned activities for summer 2022.

Students who are interested in making connections, promoting the College of AGNR, and are able to work with youth (ages 15-17) are encouraged to apply. A detailed position announcement is below. Ag Discovery Peer Mentor Position Announcement
The College of Agriculture and Natural Resources at the University of Maryland College Park is excited to announce the 2021 Ag Discovery summer program from July 10 – July 29, 2022. Ag Discovery is a 3-week program sponsored by the United States Department of Agriculture: Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (USDA/APHIS) in conjunction with the University of Maryland (UMD) College of Agriculture and Natural Resources and UMD Young Scholars Program (YSP) to promote the agricultural and life sciences and provide high-school students with an on-campus experience.

Student participants ranging from ages 15-17 will engage in varied activities involving plants and animals, the importance of protecting America's food supply from insects and disease, the role of regulation in genetically engineered organisms, and the challenge of managing and resolving wildlife conflicts. Student participants will have the opportunity to earn three university college credits in AGNR100, “An Educational Odyssey Exploring Food, Culture, and the Environment.

Ag Discovery Mentor Position Description:
All AGNR Discovery Mentors…
  • Assist with online course construction and management
  • Monitor student participants during sponsored activities from July 10 – July 29
  • Accompany student participants on all weekday field trips and one-weekend events. Past student activities include a Capitol Hill tour, trips to the National Zoo, Smithsonian Natural History Museum, Brookside Gardens, Patuxent Wildlife Refuge, and USDA lab experiments. Most activities may be virtual in the event of changes in CDC guidelines
  • Assist AGNR100 instructor with course grading and activities
  • Attend AGNR training session
  • Positively represent AGNR and the University of Maryland
  • Provide support, leadership, and compassion to Ag Discovery students
Qualifications: 
Applicants must 1) have experience working as a counselor, mentor, or tutor, 2)be an AGNR student, 3) demonstrate leadership abilities, and 4) be in good academic standing in your major.

Program Dates: 
July 10 – July 29

*Please consider your plans to take summer courses and the time commitment required for this position. Mentors must be available for the entire program, July 10- July 29. The workday for our virtual program is from 9 am to 3 pm daily and one Saturday during the three weeks. Students will work remotely during the program.

League of Women Voters of PG County Boyd-Nash/Ginter Scholarship

The League of Women Voters of Prince George’s County (LWVPGC) Maryland is a nonpartisan political organization which encourages the participation of citizens in government. This award is in memory of Thelma Boyd–Nash and in honor of Dorothy Ginter, both teachers and pioneers in the League of Women Voters of Prince George’s County Maryland. 

This organization seeks to build women and men leaders who are committed to service in their personal, school, and community lives by awarding two (2) $500 college scholarships and a one-year membership in the LWV. 

Winners will be announced at the annual meeting in the Spring of 2022 for the Fall 2022 semester. This award is given to applicants who are residents of Prince George’s County, Maryland and attending Bowie State University, Prince George’s Community College, or the University of Maryland in Prince George’s County.

Requirements:
  • A current copy of applicant’s transcript or latest report card.
  • Two (2) letters of reference, one of which has to be of applicant’s service to a community organization.
  • A typed, double-spaced essay of 450-500 words on (1) Voter Rights: How can we ensure
  • freedom to vote for all? Or (2) Climate Change: How can I as an individual influence climate change.

Professional Golfer's Association (PGA) Operations Assistant

The PGA is hiring Operations Assistants for the 2022 PGA Championship Events! This is an amazing opportunity to learn how these major championships operate and a great way for those interested in the sports industry, business operations, or event planning and management to gain experience that could help further their careers.

The 2022 PGA Championship events will be taking place this spring in Bethesda, MD, Benton Harbor, MI, and Tulsa, OK. This paid part-time entry-level position will last approximately two months (March to July 2022, depending on location), including the week of the PGA Championship events.

Urban Forester Positions with Casey Trees

Casey Trees is a Washington D.C.-based nonprofit committed to restoring, enhancing and protecting the tree canopy of the nation's capital. They are currently looking to fill two positions (more information about the positions is linked in their respective titles):

Urban Forester
The Urban Forester 1 (UF1) is responsible for the management and smooth execution of Casey Trees’ tree planting programs on both public and private lands. This incumbent fields and schedules tree planting and related consultations on a year-round basis with property owners and others, responds to referrals from local government, industry partners and others. The Urban Forester also coordinates spring, fall and winter tree plantings to flow seamlessly with other tree planting activities and events.

Urban Forestry Crew Chief
The Crew Chief executes the day-to-day operations for all tree planting, care and related activities in the Tree Operations Department, including the management/oversight of Tree Planting Crew members and their daily tasks. The position is also responsible for use, maintenance, inventory and management of all vehicles, tools and equipment. The Crew Chief reports to the Field Manager and interfaces with members of other departments in the execution of their work. The incumbent maintains a general knowledge of best practices in horticulture, forestry, and urban forestry in order to achieve the mission of Casey Trees. This is a full-time, year-round position with competitive benefits upon hire.

UMD Equine Research Unit Winter Student Worker

If you're interested in getting hands-on skills with horses during the winter break, UMD's Equine Research Unit (ERU) is looking for a small but dedicated group of students to hire that will take care of our campus horses turned out at the ERU in Ellicott City, MD from 12/20 to 1/21. This is a part-time job involving basic horse care.

The ERU is located on the beautiful 900-acre Central Maryland Research and Education farm in Ellicott City in Howard Co. (4241 Folly Quarter Rd). The ERU has about 13 acres of fenced pasture, a 16-stall barn, and office and storage space. It is home to our Equine Rotational Grazing Demonstration site. 

The shifts that need to be covered are from 8:00 am to ~ 9:00 am and 4:00-4:30pm. Students must have their own form of transportation. Pay is minimum wage and covers gas money if you live close, but students will also gain hands-on experience with horses and grow relationships with UMD animal science professors. 

The job involves performing health observations, feeding, grooming, performing basic treatments, mucking paddocks, and keeping good records. Students with horse experience or those that took ANSC 103, 232, or 330 are preferred, but horse experience is not necessary. Once hired, students must enroll in the occupational health program at UMD and take the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee training. If you have ideas on how to make our campus more sustainable, apply for a grant anywhere between $2,000 - $330,000 to help you launch your vision into reality! Any student, faculty, or staff at UMD can receive funding for initiatives and projects that benefit sustainability! Submit grant applications by the final deadline of January 15th, if you missed the priority deadline of October 15th. 

UMD Holiday Farmer's Market 12/8

Support local farms and businesses and shop for holiday gifts at UMD’s Holiday Market! The market will take place Wednesday, Dec 8th from 11am-3pm at Tawe’s Plaza. Visit the SustainableUMD Outreach table where you can make DIY natural holiday décor. Local vendors include coffee, baked goods, honey, wine, and more. At noon there will be a cooking demo with samples featuring rice crispies and warm cider! The campus weekly Farmer’s Market will be back on Wednesday, April 6, 2022. 

UMD Sustainability Green Office Internship

The Office of Sustainability seeks an intern to support the implementation of the University of Maryland Green Office Program for the Spring 2022 semester. The Green Office Intern will support offices in achieving certification with the Green Office Program and in their implementation of sustainability practices. Other duties will include:
  • Support, advise, & consult staff across campus in greening their offices
  • Assist in Green Office Representative (GO Rep) training & events
  • Contribute to the monthly Green Office newsletter
  • Update the Green Office Program website
  • Assist with the development of new tools and strategies

Horticulture Summer Internships with Denver Botanic Gardens

The mission of Denver Botanic Gardens is to connect people with plants, especially plants from the Rocky Mountain region and similar regions around the world, providing delight and enlightenment to everyone. Internships at Denver Botanic Gardens provide students with hands-on experience working alongside world-renowned researchers and horticulturists in a public garden.

Project-based and Meaningful
Denver Botanic Gardens’ horticulture internships are project-based, meaning that for the duration of their tenure with us, interns are charged with completing or continuing meaningful work for our department, institution and field. Interns also work throughout the Gardens, gaining a crucial working knowledge of public horticulture collections stewardship. When conditions allow, interns participate in field trips exploring Colorado horticulture and the diverse ecosystems of the Rocky Mountain region. Additionally, interns are offered professional development opportunities through seminars and conferences, staff-led workshops and industry networking.

In 2022, Denver Botanic Gardens is offering five full-time paid summer internships from May 31 to August 4 within the Horticulture Department in the following areas:
  • Bonsai Collection Management and Curation

International Agricultural Education Fellowship Program with USDA and CRS

Catholic Relief Services (CRS) is recruiting a total of 9 fellows for an 8-month USDA International Agriculture Education fellowship in Uganda beginning Mid-January 2022. Fellows will help establish school-based agricultural education and youth extension programs. Participating Uganda schools receive classroom instruction, field demonstrations, entrepreneurship projects, and leadership development expertise provided by the fellows.

This USDA-funded fellowship offers:
  • A small stipend with all expenses covered from January 2022- August 2022
    • Funds for airfare, housing, food, visa, insurance, and travel vaccines

It is important our Fellows know the task ahead of them is not an easy one, but the rewards, personal growth, and experience of this opportunity will play a major role in their lives’ future success.

Desired fellow skills and expertise:
  • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in Agriculture Education/ Agricultural Science, Agribusiness/Agriculture Economics, or training in any agriculture related field.
  • Official transcript of undergraduate and/or graduate degree prior to fellowship departure (this is required for visa purposes)
  • Understanding of the US agriculture education system, membership with National FFA, NAAE or National 4-H council is a plus
  • Experience with or interest in international travel and working across diverse cultures

UMD’s Academy for Innovation & Entrepreneurship is offering spring semester courses focused on innovation in multiple areas. These include IDEA247 – “Introduction to Peer Innovation Coaching,” which focuses on learning design thinking and how to coach others through the process; IDEA258A – “Becoming a Design Thinker,” which offers students a new specific design skill or mindset each week; and IDEA379A – “Design Your Purpose,” which helps students figure out what they want to do after they graduate.
