The Department of Homeland Security Experience Research


Washington – The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Science and Technology Directorate (S&T) launched the competition for graduate and undergraduate students across the United States and territories to participate in the 2023 Homeland Security Professional Opportunities for the Student Workforce to Experience Research (HS-POWER) internship program.

The DHS HS-POWER program, administered by S&T’s Office of University Programs, offers internships for students majoring in homeland security related sciences, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) disciplines to gain quality experiences conducting DHS mission-relevant research. Participants conduct research in or at DHS laboratories, DHS components and offices, and other federal research facilities nationwide, while providing the opportunity to establish connections with DHS professionals.

Appointments are typically 10-week periods during the summer, starting in May or June. Start dates are flexible. Students receive a stipend and housing allowance.

The goals of the program are to develop a diverse, talented pool of workforce-ready STEM students, and to promote long-term relationships between students, researchers, DHS personnel and research facilities to diversify the DHS workforce.

The Boren Scholarship - Last Call!

Are you currently studying, or strongly interested in studying a language critical to US national interests? Are you strongly interested in US government service?


The Boren Scholarship offers undergraduates up to $20,000 for long-term (two semesters; one for STEM majors) study abroad focused on learning critical languages. Campus deadline: January 22, 2023.


Eligible regions include Africa, South Asia, East and Southeast Asia, Eastern Europe and former Soviet Republics, Latin America (esp. for Portuguese), and the Middle East. (Boren Scholarships MAY NOT be used for study in Western Europe, Canada, Australia, or New Zealand.) Boren Scholarships may be used for study abroad in Summer 2023, Fall 20243, and/or Spring 2024.

Undergraduate Research Day

Undergraduate Research Day (URD), Maryland’s largest, most visible and diversified showcase for undergraduate research accomplishments will take place on WEDNESDAY, APRIL 26, 2023, from 1 to 4 pm, with registration and set up opening at 11:30 am. URD will once again take place in the Grand Ballroom of the Stamp Student Union.

 

Presentation proposals may be submitted beginning Wednesday, February 1, 2023 through the MCUR website. More information will be available on the MCUR website beginning January 23, 2023.

The Maryland Commission on Civil Rights Leadership Program

 


The Maryland Commission on Civil Rights Leadership Program (CRLP) is a free three-day academy designed to provide training and insight to emerging leaders by fostering a comprehensive and supportive educational environment wherein program participants will engage with experienced Civil Rights leaders, scholars, and practitioners in order to learn more about career paths and opportunities in the field.

 

The program will be held virtually  on March 2-5, 2023.  Topics covered will be, but not limited to:

 

·        Training on Maryland’s Anti-Discrimination Laws and MCCR Enforcement

·        Legal Overview/Investigative Practices

·        Civil Rights Career Forum

Prince George’s Audubon Society Communications Intern

 

The Prince George’s Audubon Society seeks a communications intern for the 2023 spring

semester to—

1. Carry out a full upgrade and revamp of our chapter website, including set-up of tools for

email marketing

2. Integrate social media to augment our outreach

3. Help make the PGAS website a dynamic, electronic hub where members, volunteers and

the public can learn about and sign up to volunteer for and/or participate in PGAS

events such as bird walks, the Migration Festival and the Habitat Advisor program

*$17 per hour ($2,295 total), nine hours a week for the spring semester, virtual and in-person*

Qualifications—

1. Demonstrated ability to develop a website using Squarespace or a similar platform

2. Demonstrated ability to use Calendly or a similar software program

3. Ability to work both independently and with a team

4. Knowledge of best ways to reach a wider audience with social media tools

Preferred Interest/Knowledge—

Environmental studies and/or interest in the natural world

Opportunities will include—

1. Engagement with Audubon on Campus, a national program that supports student

conservationists

2. Training with naturalists who lead PGAS’s Audubon Wildlife Habitat Program

3. Deepened understanding of the role wildlife habitat plays in sustaining ecosystem

health

4. Mentorship and supervision provided by educator and co-founder of PGAS Wildlife

Habitat Program—a dynamic, grassroots effort to empower people to make beneficial

change in their own outdoor spaces

5. Hands-on experience with a growing environmental organization

Agromovil Communications Intern



 The farm-to-market system is incredibly inefficient. Every year, small farmers around

the world lose an estimated $300B in potential value between intermediaries and

harvested crops that never make it to market. To unlock this trapped value, we

developed Agromovil, a global app-based platform that helps small farmers see new

market opportunities, sell directly to buyers, and find optimized transport – getting

products to market more efficiently and profitably around the world.

As an international tech start-up, Agromovil is an exciting team to join. We embrace

Agromovil’s social purpose and place small farmers at the center of everything that

we do. Agromovil is based in Washington, DC and is currently operating in Colombia,

Tanzania, and Ghana.

Agromovil is seeking a bright, motivated Communications Intern who is looking for

an opportunity to make a difference in the world. Through this internship, you will

have a real impact on small agriculture – empowering farmers and their communities,

and reducing food insecurity and waste.


Time: 10-12 hours/week during the school year, 15-20 hours/week during the

summer.

Compensation: begins as an unpaid internship with an opportunity for a stipend or

- Energetic, determined, can-do attitude

- Foreign language skills (especially in Spanish, Swahili, Portuguese, or French)

The Farm Credit Foundation Scholarship Reminder

The Farm Credit Foundation for Agricultural Advancement is now accepting applications for their 2023 scholarship program! This year, the Foundation will be awarding at least 10 students with up to $10,000 to use towards their education.

AFA Leader Institutes: Applications Open!

 

The Agriculture Future of America Leader Institutes provide undergraduate college students specialized professional development opportunities that focus on professional and peer networking, exclusive company tours, and panels and discussions on relevant industry topics. 


AFA currently offers six Institute experiences and competitively selects students for each program. Every Institute provides professional development training and direct exposure to industry professionals and key environments within the given specialty sector.

U.S. EPA: Veterans and Persons with Disabilities National Outreach Event

 


The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is hosting its a national outreach webinar for veterans and persons with disabilities on November 16th and 17th at 2:00 PM EST (11:00 AM, PST).

While the intended audience are veterans and persons with disabilities, the event is open to the public. Current students and alumni are invited to learn about EPA’s role in protecting human health and the environment, as well as how to apply to paid internships and recent graduate opportunities. We will provide an overview of the federal hiring process, including creating a USAJOBS profile, building a federal resume, and an opportunity to engage with employees in the field.

Greenhouse & Nursery Manager - Lewisburg, WV Job Oppritunity

 Position: Greenhouse and Nursery Manager

Organization: Appalachian Headwaters

Location: Lewisburg, West Virginia


Position Overview:

Appalachian Headwaters is a nonprofit organization focused on restoration of native ecosystems and environmental education in central Appalachia. We have two sites, each with a green house and a shade house. These sites also include hundreds of acres of open growing space. These sites include (1) a 100-acre park and environmental center, and (2) a 100-acre camp property. We also have an experienced grounds crew and grounds crew manager. The Greenhouse and Nursery Manager will help guide Headwaters’ native plant horticulture program, directing the plants we grow and how we care for them.

Headwaters started its native plant nursery in 2018 to grow native plants and seeds for its mined land restoration, environmental education, and pollinator gardens. Planting nursery stock from seed collected from central Appalachia will contribute to success of our projects.


The Greenhouse and Nursery Manager will be responsible for:

  • managing the plant production at our sites,
  • planting and maintaining plants at educational and restoration sites,
  • working with nursery program staff,
  • plant propagation and care,
  • helping direct grounds maintenance and invasive species removal at Headwaters’ properties,
  • some community education programs,
  • other activities that fit the staff’s talents and organizational needs.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A bachelors’ degree, master’s degree, or comparable experience in Horticulture, Agronomy, greenhouse management, or a related field;
  • Experience in a greenhouse (required);
  • At least two years’ experience in nursery work and horticulture;
  • Knowledge of native plant horticulture;
  • Compatible with our program mission, including a dedication to environmental protection, organic plant growing and restoration of native ecosystems;

 

Compensation: Full time salaried position with excellent benefits including up to 10% retirement match and fully paid medical insurance.

Position will be based in Lewisburg, West Virginia

Stamp founding the University of Maryland chapter in 1934, Mortar Board is one of the premier national honor societies on campus recognizing college seniors for superior achievement in scholarship, leadership, and service. Only top students are accepted to join this esteemed society, making it one of the most prestigious organizations on campus. Mortar Board is one of only five honor/leadership societies recognized by President Pines during graduation commencement ceremonies. 
 
Membership will only be given to students who truly exemplify excellence in Leadership, Service, and Scholarship.
