The Washington National Cathedral, along with St. Albans School, National Cathedral School, and Beauvoir, The National Cathedral Elementary School, is located on a campus of 57 acres of landscaped grounds in the heart of the nation’s Capital. This internship provides instruction and hands-on athletic field maintenance experience working on four high school fields. Under the Assistant Director, interns will participate in implementing turf maintenance program for the Cathedral Close and work with the groundskeeper/turf crew to ensure superior turf and proper maintenance. Activities are coordinated with/between the athletic departments to ensure playing surfaces are game ready. Technical assistance provided on all proper turf practices and overseeing the IPM program for turf.

Interns will work Monday through Friday from 6:00 am to 2:30 pm.

Preference will be given to applicants who are pursuing a degree in turfgrass management, horticulture, sport management, or a related field. Applicants must be able to work outside in inclement weather such as rain and extreme heat, must be able to perform physical work including bending, stooping, reaching, and standing for extended periods of time, must be able to lift, carry, and push at least 30 lbs. Housing is not provided and there is no housing allowance. The internship is 12 weeks, with flexible start and end dates. May through August preferred.

This internship program provides instruction and hands-on gardening experience. Under the direction of the horticulture staff, interns will participate in the installation, maintenance, conservation, and preservation of the Bishop’s Garden and the Cathedral grounds. Areas of emphasis include ornamental herb garden, herbaceous perennial borders, a hybrid-tea rose garden, a 5-acre native woodland, and a classroom vegetable garden. Proper horticulture techniques will be emphasized, including weeding, staking, pruning, watering, plant identification, and using IPM methods of insect and disease control. 

Interns will work Monday through Friday from 6:00 am to 2:30 pm. To enhance the educational experience, interns will visit public gardens in the surrounding Metro DC area.

Position Summary/Purpose of Position: This position is a 12 month, term appointment. The full-time position is part of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program - Education (SNAP-Ed) conducted by the University of Maryland Extension. The educator will deliver nutrition education programs to low income residents in Howard County with emphasis on reaching food supplement (stamp) recipients. The position will be housed in the Howard County Extension office in Columbia, MD.

Responsibilities Include:

 Serve as Project Leader for Howard County SNAP-Ed Project.

 Develop the SNAP-Ed annual proposal with input from collaborators.

 Manage SNAP-Ed project budget, including tracking and documenting expenditures.

 Plan and conduct nutrition education programs for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)

participants in Howard County.

 Collaborate with local food assistance programs to develop and distribute nutrition information.

evaluate programs and seek new partnerships to deliver nutrition education programs, with a focus on

Minimum Qualifications:

Required–

 Bachelor's Degree in nutrition, health education, or a related field.

Entomology Faculty Asst. Position

Title: Faculty Assistant 

Location: College Park, MD 

Department: CMNS, Entomology

Position description: The Krishnan Lab in the Entomology department at the University of Maryland, College Park, is seeking a full-time faculty assistant (40 hours/week). The position will start in January/February 2024. The faculty assistant will develop and disseminate extension materials related to pesticide education. They will also help maintain insect colonies and oversee day-to-day running of the lab.  

Primary responsibilities: 

1. Reading documents and developing resources (including flyers, presentations, and extension publications) on pesticide use and regulations. 

2. Undertaking needs assessments of different stakeholder groups and presenting at grower/pesticide applicator meetings. 

3. Helping rear and maintain insect colonies (butterflies, moths, beetles, flies). 

4. Purchasing laboratory supplies, updating chemical inventories, undertaking laboratory safety inspections, and, if needed, assisting other lab members with their research projects.  

Required qualifications: 

1. Bachelor’s degree (degree should be obtained prior to start date). 

2. Good writing skills. 

3. Good organizational skills (must be confirmed by references). 

4. General biology/chemistry laboratory experience. 

Preferred qualifications: 

1. Experience in outreach/extension. 

2. Experience with graphic design or related skillsets. 

3. Experience managing a laboratory. 

4. Experience working with insects.

National Wildlife Federation Grant Program

 National Wildlife Federation and Mutual of Omaha are excited to announce the 2023-2024 Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom College and University Grant Program.

National Wildlife Federation and Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom have teamed up to inspire and support the efforts of the next generation of conservation leadership. To that end, we are collaborating on a series of grants that support Universities and Colleges throughout the country to showcase and fund innovative and solutions-based programs or strategies that help protect and/or restore wildlife and/or their key habitats.

Eligibility: Faculty or staff, 18 years of age and older, from any college or university within the U.S. are eligible to apply. Applications are invited from faculty and staff in all disciplines and are not limited to environmental studies, wildlife biology, etc.

Focus areas may include, but are not limited to:

  • Develop and implement plans to protect and/or restore habitat for any threatened or endangered species on campus or in the community

IAA and AGNR Peer Mentor

Are you interested in being a peer mentor? Are you in, or graduated from the IAA? Consider working for the college and for IAA!

Title: Peer Mentor (specifically for the support of IAA students)

Location: AGNR Office of Academic Programs (Symons Hall) and the Institute of Applied Agriculture (Jull Hall)

Responsibilities:

Peer Mentors (PMs) meet with AGNR students by way of drop-in or scheduled appointments, during which they:

❖ Assist with the preparation of 2- and 4-year academic plans and explain degree/benchmark progress

❖ Familiarize others with registration procedures and resources (Testudo, Venus, etc)

❖ Assist in advising appointment planning such as building tentative schedules, pre-selecting courses,

reviewing academic audits, exploring changing majors or adding additional major(s)/minor(s)

❖ Help students understand and navigate campus/college policies (e.g. transfer credit processes,

requests for exceptions, major changes, scholarship opportunities, math eligibility, GenEds, etc)

❖ Guide students to various campus resources and/or services as needed (e.g. career services, counseling services, learning assistance services, etc).


When not assisting students, PMs will assist the AGNR Academic Programs Office to complete other tasks associated with student services and support. This includes but is not limited to data management, record filing, event planning, mailing, and greeting other staff/faculty/visitors to the office. Other duties unique to the IAA Peer Mentor:

❖ Assist students with IAA-to-UMD transfer process

❖ Assist with IAA Internship process

❖ Host IAA student Q&A & “advising” sessions when appropriate

❖ Connect IAA students to campus engagement opportunities

❖ Assist with New Student Orientation (pending availability)


Minimum Qualifications:


● Currently enrolled as a full-time undergraduate student in an AGNR major

○ Note: ENSP applicants must be pursuing a concentration within AGNR

● Will have completed two semesters within the IAA by the end of December 2023

○ Preferred: Already completed AgForward or IAA-to-UMD transfer process

● Will have completed 24+ cumulative credits by the end of December 2023

● Currently has a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher (2.7 or higher may be considered)

● Will not be graduating with their BS/BLA prior to December 2024

○ Preferred: Will not be graduating with BS/BLA prior to May 2025

● Preferred: Demonstrated extracurricular involvement within IAA, AGNR, and/or UMD


Commitment & Compensation:

Peer Mentors commit to a minimum of 4 work hours per week (preferrably two 2-hour shifts). If possibly, the IAA PM will spend one weekly shift in Symons Hall and the other in Jull Hall. Additional shifts or hours may be discussed as needed. Peer Mentors are paid $15.00 hourly (UMD’s current minimum wage for students).

Date Available:

This position will remain open until filled. The new hire will begin their onboarding at the start of the Spring 2024 semester. Contracts are reviewed annually and may be renewed for additional years (Aug to May) moving forward.

Community Farm Specialist Position

The Piedmont Environmental Council (PEC) conserves and restores the lands and waters of the Virginia Piedmont, while building stronger, more sustainable communities. Founded in 1972, PEC is a locally based, community-supported 501(c)(3) nonprofit and accredited land trust. At the core of PEC’s approach is a focus on educating, engaging and empowering people to effect positive change in their communities.

About the Community Farm at Roundabout Meadows

The PEC Community Farm at Roundabout Meadows is located on a 141-acre PEC-owned property at Gilbert’s Corner in Loudoun County, Virginia (39990 Howsers Branch Dr. Aldie, VA 20105).

Launched in 2019, the Community Farm is a vegetable farm operation that grows produce for local food pantries, utilizing organic inputs and techniques. The farm consists of 3.5 acres of vegetable production and 1 acre of fruit trees and berries, producing tens of thousands of pounds of fresh fruits and vegetables annually. Engagement with volunteers, schools, and community organizations is a vital part of the farm, which not only provides opportunities for the public to engage with their local food system and give back, but also fosters lasting relationships with the community. Highly visible through its productivity, use of a volunteer workforce, and engagement with the community, the Community Farm promotes the importance of land stewardship, access to fresh foods, and mutual aid. Through the collaborative efforts of the Community Farm team, volunteers actively participate in local agriculture, local residents have access to farm tours and educational workshops, and families in need throughout Loudoun County benefit from increased access to fresh, healthy, locally-produced fruits and vegetables.

Your Role

PEC is seeking to hire a Community Farm Specialist to support operations at the Community Farm a Roundabout Meadows in Loudoun County, VA. The Community Farm Specialist will possess experience and knowledge of vegetable farming with an interest in working with a diverse community of volunteers and community members. The farm specialist must demonstrate an ability to work collaboratively and proactively as a member of the farm team, with volunteers and visitors, as well as PEC staff. The Community Farm Specialist will have an integral role in the full farm operation, providing assistance to the Community Farm Coordinator in regard to all farm operations.

Typical activities include:

  • Vegetable and fruit production to meet the needs of our local food pantries

  • Operating a tractor using a variety of implements

  • Mowing, bed preparation, seeding, planting, weeding, irrigating, harvesting and washing crops

  • Organizing, educating, and working alongside diverse volunteers, teaching and speaking publicly about agriculture and the Community Farm program

  • Assisting in the preparation and implementation of educational programming for field trips and workshops

  • Grounds, equipment and building maintenance

  • Assuring safety protocols and best management practices are met

  • Assisting with broader property management tasks throughout the Roundabout Meadows and Gilberts Corner Farmers Market properties as assigned. Tasks may include but are not limited to:

    • Soil sampling

    • Trail maintenance

    • Tree planting

    • Fence maintenance

  • Other duties as assigned

The Community Farm Specialist reports to PEC’s Gilberts Corner Farm and Land Manager but will also work closely with and be provided day-to-day supervision by the Community Farm Coordinator. In addition, the Community Farm Specialist will collaborate with other PEC staff, departments within PEC and members of the PEC Board of Directors.

This position will be based at PEC’s Community Farm at Roundabout Meadows (39990 Howsers Branch Dr. Aldie, VA 20105) with occasional travel to the headquarters office in Warrenton, VA.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum two years of vegetable farming experience

  • Experience working with volunteers, school groups, and individuals of all ages and skill levels.

  • Ability to organize, coordinate, and manage diverse activities and deadlines.

  • Ability to make decisions and solve problems independently, effectively, and creatively with minimal supervision.

  • Mission-minded with strong interest in conservation, sustainable agriculture, education, and community development.

  • Effective interpersonal skills, including the ability and desire to build relationships with a diverse constituency including local political officials, non-profit representatives, donors, neighborhood associations, businesses and individual citizens with a wide range of backgrounds and perspectives.

  • Demonstrated strong communication skills (written, oral and social-media focused) to develop written/photographic/video materials for use in communicating goals and stories.

  • Familiarity with the operation and maintenance of small machinery, power tools, and hand tools.

  • Familiarity with and ability to carry out maintenance of farm-related structures.

  • Familiarity with computers and the use of online tools, such as the Google Suite, Microsoft Office, social media platforms, etc. 

  • Ability to work outdoors, in all weather conditions, with limited facilities.

  • Willing to work weekends and evenings as necessary.

  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation required.

  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.

  • Commitment to service and community and a willingness to participate in practices of

  • justice, equity, diversity and inclusion (JEDI).

Preferred Qualifications

  • 3-5 years of farming experience.

  • Bachelor’s degree in agriculture, horticulture, or related field.

Compensation

This position is a non-exempt / hourly position with benefits. Salary range of $22 to $26.44 per hour (equivalent to $45,000 – $55,000 annually), depending on qualifications.
