The United States Department of Agriculture recognizes the impacts of food loss and food waste on food security and the environment. In response, USDA, in concert with agency partners, is working toward the goal of reducing food loss and food waste by 50 percent by 2030.
In the latest effort in reduction activities, Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education (SARE) has initiated a Food Loss and Waste Program, supporting projects that align with USDA activities aimed at reducing food loss and reducing food waste. The Southern region SARE program, based at the University of Georgia, serves as host institution for the Food Loss and Waste Program. SARE is a USDA grant-making program focusing on sustainable agriculture principles.
Scope of Work
The following include responsibilities of the Event Planner/Workshop Coordinator.
Collaborate with National SARE Food Loss and Waste (FLW) Program Manager to:
- Develop background information and list of invitees for each of ten states;
- Plan agenda, activities, and logistics for each workshop;
- Engage stakeholders to commit to attendance at workshops;
- Lead workshop activities including (but not limited to) leading sessions and activities, notetaking, sending invitations and registering attendees, reserving venues, ordering workshop meals and supplies, and set-up and take-down;
- Coordinate and execute virtual meetings that include stakeholders from several states;
- Summarize activities, outcomes, and findings in a comprehensive final report

2026 Spring Break in Brazil: Recorded info session and scholarships
- UMD Education Abroad scholarships: Students can be awarded up to $1500
- AGNR Study Abroad scholarship: Our College also awards $500 to support studying in Brazil
- Gilman Scholarship: This is a national scholarship from the State Department that students can apply for. Awards vary but can be up to $5000.
- Related to this, UMD offers the Gilman Guarantee. If students apply for the Gilman scholarship through UMD's National Scholarship Office, they will get $500 guaranteed (regardless of if they receive a Gilman award or not). If they end up not receiving a Gilman award, they still keep that $500, and UMD will award them an additional $2000 (for a total scholarship of $2500). If they do get a Gilman award, then they still keep that initial $500, and they receive whatever amount Gilman decides to award them.

JOB SUMMARY:
The Salvation Army World Service Office (SAWSO) is seeking an intern to support its International Business and Economic Development team in advancing agriculture-based livelihoods initiatives.
This role is ideal for someone passionate about global economic development, agriculture, and empowering communities through sustainable business models.
- Conduct desk research on best practices and innovations in agricultural small business development (particularly in LMICs) and synthesize findings into clear, actionable recommendations.
- Support the integration of business development and livelihoods approaches into agriculture-focused projects to help field teams and technical advisors strengthen the economic impact of farming initiatives.
- Collaborate with technical advisors and field teams to design and document replicable, sustainable farm models suitable for smallholder and community-based settings.
- Assist with coffee business development efforts, including research on cultivation practices, post-harvest processing, and market opportunities.
- Help develop practical tools, guides, and training materials that local teams can use to improve productivity, quality, and profitability of agricultural initiatives.
- Contribute to market research and competitor analysis for agricultural products and enterprises.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Current undergraduate or graduate student (or recent graduate) in agriculture, agronomy, agricultural economics, environmental science, or a closely related field.
Strong understanding of agricultural systems, smallholder farming, or agribusiness models; familiarity with LMIC contexts is a plus.
Experience or coursework in areas such as sustainable farming practices, crop production, agricultural value chains, or rural livelihoods.

The Clarke Diplomatic Security Fellowship Program is intended for talented students who want to pursue a master’s degree and a career as a Diplomatic Security Service Special Agent in the Foreign Service.
The Pickering and Rangel
The Foreign Affairs IT (FAIT) Fellowship is a two-year program that provides academic funding for an IT-related degree, internships, professional development and mentorship – culminating in an appointment in the Foreign Service of the U.S. Department of State as an Information Management Specialist (IMS).
Service Requirement: Recipients of the graduate programs must complete a minimum five-year term of service as a Foreign Service Officer (three years for the Clarke program).
Eligibility requirements for all programs:
- Applicants for the Clarke, Pickering, and Rangel programs must be seeking admission to enter graduate school in the fall of 2026 for a two-year program at a U.S. university in an area of relevance to the Foreign Service.
- Applicants may be rising seniors or recent college graduates. For the FAIT program applicants must be at least rising Sophomores, and should be majoring in an IT-related field.
- Applicants must have a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher on a 4.0 scale at the time of application.
- Applicants must be U.S. citizens
Pubic Policy and International Affairs (PPIA) Fellowship Program

Learn about the PPIA (Public Policy and International Affairs Fellowship) Program. This opportunity is for juniors with strong interests in pursuing careers in international affairs or domestic public policy.
This all-expenses-paid program for summer 2026 includes courses (with transferable credit), a full range of extracurricular activities, and career-development support, travel & room and board, and more!
Important: **This program focuses on students receiving need-based financial aid (demonstrated by FAFSA), as well as students from groups historically underrepresented in international affairs leadership roles in government, nonprofits, international organizations and other institutional settings.**
