 Greenhouse Operations Grower:

White House Nursery is seeking an Operations Grower to join our tight knit greenhouse team.

This position will oversee the management of a small team. They will work with irrigation, pest and disease control, ordering, and overall care of crops along with lending help on other projects as needed. This position will coordinate with other teams, so a strong understanding of greenhouse needs, and clear communication is crucial. Prior greenhouse experience is required. About White House Nursery: White House Nursery is a family-owned farm that has existed for over a century. We are a 30- acre farm with 21 greenhouses located in beautiful, northern Baltimore County, Maryland. We also have a customer retail shop and an additional acre of outdoor growing space. Our nursery allows us to grow both traditional and unique plants with beauty and purpose. Our consumers consist of the local community and wholesale customers throughout Maryland.

Duties and Responsibilities:

- 35-40 hours per week

- Oversee growing and management of greenhouse staff

- Depending on the season, this position will manage anywhere from 3 to 7

employees, which includes the irrigation team and the production team from

planting to shipping

- Coordinate with the retail, office, and maintenance team

- Coordinate and create the schedule of crops

- Spring: annuals, perennials, hanging baskets, edibles, etc.

- Easter crops: lilies, hyacinths, tulips, annuals, hydrangeas, etc.

- Fall: mums, asters, marigolds, peppers/ kale. cabbage, edibles, etc.

- Holiday: poinsettias, cyclamen, Christmas cacti, calla, etc.

- Assorted houseplants

- Measure, identify, and remedy crop health like disease, Ph levels, EC, moisture levels,

nutrition, lighting, and pest management

- Apply bio beneficials or spray pesticides

- Apply fungicides and growth retardants

- This position will work on different duties based off need, this includes irrigation,

production, and maintenance

- Regarding maintenance, you must be able to repair water lines, greenhouse

structures like plastic replacement, repair growing benches, and other repairs.

- Ordering supplies as needed

- Maintaining relationships with vendors

Requirements:

- Honest, trustworthy, self-motivated as this position requires you to work efficiently on

assigned tasks independently or with little assistance

- One-year prior experience working in a greenhouse with growing experience.

- Must be able to walk through narrow walkways, crouch, bend, reach, lift and carry items

weighing up to 75 pounds

- This position is exposed to various weather conditions from rain to wind to cold and heat,

must have the ability to work in these situations.

- Reliable transportation, no public transportation available.

- Working some weekends will be required during the busy seasons of April, May,

September, and December

- Working flexible hours depending on daylight availability and weather conditions

Desirable skills and experience:

- We are open to providing some training to the right individual, but a minimum of one

year experience growing crops is desirable

- Experience managing a team as this position will work with different teams throughout

the farm

- Comfortability working with hand tools to maintain equipment

- Computer skills in communication and record keeping will be through Google

Workspace and Microsoft Office

Salary:

Salary is negotiable and commensurate with experience based off of industry standards

The Urban Forester 1 (UF1) is responsible for the management and smooth execution of Casey Trees’ tree planting programs on both public and private lands. This incumbent fields and schedules tree planting and related consultations on a year-round basis with a variety of property owners, responds to referrals from local government, industry partners, and others. The Urban Forester also coordinates spring, fall, and winter tree plantings to flow seamlessly with other tree planting activities and events.

PA Hameau Farm Camp Counselors

   For 27 years 'Farm Camp' has been a value added product here at Hameau Farm (www.hameaufarm.com). Experiential learning, hands on, 2-week, farm involvement for girls, ages 7-14. The vast majority of these campers are not farm girls, they come from major metropolitan areas! And for staff, college age women, opportunities to share and try out book knowledge, yes, and more.

Who are we?

We are a small dairy farm that doubles as a summer sleepaway camp for girls age 7-14

during the summer months. Our mission is to empower young women, increase

confidence and celebrate uniqueness through hard work and fun! Summers on the farm

include farm activities like working with animals and farm chores, as well as traditional

camp experiences like bonfires, songs and arts & crafts. We are a small program, with a

staff of 10-12 strong women looking after 30 campers. Check out our summer

What you’d be doing:

We look to our staff to lead the fun, and provide a safe and exploratory environment for

campers. We are looking for responsible young leaders, comfortable running activities

on their own and working closely with a co-counselor to look after 10 girls in a cabin.

 

Responsibilities:

 Look after 30 girls as part of a team of 7 staff members

 Work seamlessly with your co-counselors and CITs as a team to make it the best

summer ever for these young ladies!

 Facilitate a fun and exploratory environment where campers are encouraged to

ask questions and explore

 Monitor campers closely during off-farm excursions

 Generate a list of possible camp activities based on your skills and experiences

(can be anything from an arts & crafts project, to cooking, improv class, science

experiments, writing activity, athletics, puppetry)

 Design and run 3-5 activities a week

 Be fun and lighthearted, lead the fun!

FIRE Summer Research Intern

I hope you are having a great Spring 2023 semester! FIRE is excited to announce the 2023 FIRE Summer Research Internships, a research experience and professional development opportunity built for a wide range of University of Maryland (UMD) students. This opportunity is available to UMD undergraduates both affiliated with and independent of the FIRE program at UMD. 

FIRE Summer Research Internships provide:

• a research-intensive, faculty-mentored 8-week summer experience

           AND

• 3 credits of transcript-impacting FIRE199: FIRE Research Internship course credit

FIRE Summer Research Interns work closely with our FIRE Faculty Leaders and a small group of their undergraduate peers on focused research projects in FIRE stream locations across campus.

All FIRE Summer Research Interns will participate in a broad range of potential research engagements:

• receive fundamental research, technology, and method training (no previous experience is required for all participants),
• learn, test, and implement new research methodologies and protocols,
• design and pilot experiments,
• gather and analyze data,
• and develop and share a finalized project or other research accomplishments.

All FIRE Summer Research Interns will strongly develop their leadership potential and other professional capacities through weekly program-wide seminars and professional development discussions.

Each FIRE stream has a small number of FIRE Summer Research Interns, ensuring selected students get a focused, faculty-mentored research experience.

Eligibility

The FIRE Summer Research Internships is the opportunity through which FIRE is able to offer its resources to students who are currently in FIRE, those who have already completed FIRE, and other UMD undergraduate students who are not affiliated with FIRE.

To be clear on this issue of eligibility for FIRE Summer Research Internships - the following groups of UMD undergraduates are encouraged to consider this exciting opportunity and apply:
