JOB TITLE: Animal handler and assistant to the shearer
BRIEF DESCRIPTION: The assistant will work with large animals while they are
being sheared - primarily sheep, goats, alpacas, and llamas, although
occasionally we clip horses and trim potbelly pig hooves and tusks.
WHEN: Temporary seasonal - begins approximately April 15. 2024 and runs
through end of July, 2024. Ordinarily 4-6 days a week during April and May,
and 3-4 days a week in June and July. There are no specific days off
because every day and every week is different.
WHERE: Shearer is based out of Montgomery County, MD and day jobs will begin
from there. There are also several 3-4 day trips out of state (primarily
New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Virginia).
PAY: Payment is made on a weekly basis and is based on a percentage of the
total gross for the week. Every day is different, but on average, the pay
ordinarily ranges between $15 and $25/hour. 1099 will be issued at the end
of the fiscal year.
REQUIREMENTS:
A great love for animals
Good physical health and stamina
Ability to work long days
Excellent sense of humor
Authorized to work in the US
Has own vehicle (to meet up - all travel will be done in the shearer's
vehicle) and good driving record (will share the driving on the longer
trips)

PEARLS GeoSciences Training Program

May through mid-August (approx. 16 weeks), Monday-Friday, up to 40 hours per week, but would be flexible on scheduling with the right candidate; pay range from $16-$18/hour.
Description of Work
Assist the planting and care of annuals, perennials, and shrubs in historic parterre gardens. Work will primarily be in the parterre gardens but could extend to other areas of the property. Intern will be trained by National Park Service horticulture staff and expected to work independently once skills are established. Tasks include planting, mulching, watering, pinching, fertilizing, pruning, deadheading, and hand weeding. Learning opportunities include practicing plant identification techniques, reviewing landscape management goals and strategies associated with caring for a historic public landscape, and observing integrated pest management practices including pest identification.
Requirements
Minimum of 18 years old.
Ability to work under physically challenging conditions, specifically: heat, rain, sun exposure, pollen, insects, and noise from power equipment AND be both self-directed and work alone while being a positive team member AND be able to complete bi-weekly timesheets and write brief synopsis of weekly work activities. Successful candidate would be considered an independent contractor through Historic Hampton, Inc., but working in the park supervised by NPS employees.
Requires frequent sitting, stooping, kneeling, standing, walking, carrying, using hands to handle or feel, reaching with hands and arms, talking and hearing. Manual dexterity required for use of various tools.

Anyone with interest or experience in horticulture, historic landscapes, or public gardens is needed.
Prospective students, current students, and recent graduates of an academic institution with coursework in, or related to, horticulture, botany, environmental science, ecology, or natural resource management OR in continuing education classes associated with horticulture will be given priority.

JIFSAN Internships
Administration and the University of Maryland, has several positions
available beginning in the summer of 2024. Positions will continue through
the 2024-25 academic year. JIFSAN interns must have completed at least two
college semesters and be enrolled as undergraduate students at the University
of Maryland, College Park during the time of their internship.
Interns are expected to work 30 hours/week during the summer of 2024 and part
time (8-10 hours/week) during the academic year. These are intended to be
hands-on experiences in FDA laboratories, to the extent possible given the
ongoing pandemic. Applicants should be aware that FDA policies and protocols
relating to conducting work in federal facilities may require thatinternships be fully or primarily virtual. Interns are paid $16/hour.
Current freshmen, sophomores and juniors are encouraged to apply. Students
who plan to graduate in December 2024 are generally not eligible.

Penn State Horticulture Internship
Each summer, the Arboretum offers internships for undergraduate students and recent graduates interested in deepening their horticultural skills. Internships provide an immersive educational experience, combining hands-on garden training with field trips, discussion sessions, and the opportunity to interact with and lead groups of Arboretum volunteers. The USDA, Agricultural Research Service, Genetic Improvement of Fruits and Vegetables Laboratory in Beltsville, MD, is accepting applications for two temporary Agricultural Science Aid positions. One position will support our strawberry breeding project, and the other will support our tomato and pepper breeding project. Full-time work during the summer can transition to part-time during the school year if desired. US citizenship is required. Selective Service Registration is required for males 18 years old. Applicants must be capable of following directions, keeping detailed and accurate records, using a computer, willing and able to undertake some strenuous tasks in outdoor and greenhouse work environments, able to lift a minimum of 25 lbs, and have a valid US-issued driver’s license. Freshmen can be hired at a GS2 level ($15.79/hr) with 3 or more months of general work experience. Those with at least 6 semester hours in any combination of scientific or technical courses such as biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, physics, agriculture, or mathematics, can be hired at a GS3 level ($17.22/hr). The project is about strawberry breeding with opportunities to learn basic skills and safety protocols in the field, and greenhouse, working with experienced technicians and scientists. Moutoux Orchard Whole Diet CSA
We are a faced-paced, diverse production farm that grows exclusively for our year-round Whole Diet CSA program. We grow vegetables and fruits organically with an emphasis on fostering soil health and nutrient density. We manage a 100% grass-fed Jersey dairy herd, and raise 100% grass-fed beef, and pasture-raised, organically-fed laying hens, and pigs. We mix vegetable fields, cover crops, and livestock in creative ways to grow great crops and build soil. Each year we hire 3-4 excited, energetic farm hands to help with the day to day production in all aspects of the farm.
We are a diverse farm and you will be exposed to all aspects of production. Field vegetable production is the primary focus of the work—seeding, transplanting, weeding, harvesting, mulching, foliar spraying, etc. We grow all of our own seedlings and grow in hoop houses for winter production. You will participate in harvest and on-farm CSA distribution twice weekly. Workers will also do livestock chores approximately 2-4 days/week, including feeding and watering livestock, moving animals to new pasture, building livestock fence, and maintaining the brooder. Other responsibilities of the position include daily egg collection, dairy processing (yogurt, cheese, kefir), and some CSA outreach. There may be an opportunity to be part of the milking team for our small herd of Jersey cows. There will be minimal orchard work—thinning, pruning, and picking.

INFO College UMD Challenge
From February 24–March 2, 2024, the INFO College will be hosting the annual UMD Info Challenge, where students from across UMD and the State of Maryland come together to solve real-world information challenges and win prizes! Participants gain valuable team-building and resume-building skills, and have the opportunity to network with top companies.
The theme of Info Challenge 2024 is “The Data of Global Change” and will offer challenges in data analytics, design, security, and project management (new for IC24!). No prior data analysis experience is needed! Student participants will work in person with their teams on kick-off day, then work remotely throughout the week, and present their final projects in person to a panel of judges on March 2. The day will end with a Showcase Event where teams will show off their final projects to friends, family, and other information enthusiasts, followed by the IC24 Awards Ceremony.

JugBay Wetlands Internship Opportunities
JugBay Wetlands is offering multiple internship opportunities. Research and Education internships are available and due on March 29th, 2024.
Internships are for 12 weeks between June and August.
Research internships require a proposal about a specific topic or question chosen from a list provided, or by the applicants own creative devices. Both Graduates and undergraduates are able to apply but must be able to work independently with occasional help from an advisor. Resumes, transcripts, and two letters of recommendation are required to apply.
At the conclusion of the internship, students will have conducted research, developed a final report, give a presentation, and write an article for the newsletter.
A $4,000 stipend will be dispersed over the course of the internship. Housing is also available at no cost.

December 19, 2024- The Maryland Agricultural Education Foundation (MAEF) is now accepting applications for the 2024 Academic and Seibel Scholarships.
The recipients of the MAEF Academic Scholarship will receive $1,500 in support of their academic achievements and pursuit of a career in agricultural or Extension education. MAEF Academic Scholarships are open to rising junior or senior undergraduate or graduate students enrolled in majors leading to careers in agricultural education or Extension education. Qualified candidates should complete and submit their online application by March 25, 2024.
The Seibel Scholarship is open to students pursuing a two-year or four-year degree enrolled in majors leading to careers in agriculture or agriculture education at a qualifying institution. Dr. Ronald J. Seibel established this scholarship fund during his lifetime to support students seeking agricultural degrees or certificates.
