Student Alumni Leadership Council (SALC) - Application is OPEN!

The Student Alumni Leadership Council (SALC) is an on campus student organization that aims to inspire a sense of community between Terps across generations while instilling loyalty to our alma mater. Joining SALC is a great way to get involved on campus! Through our robust event calendar including events we host and ones we are invited to as ambassadors of the Alumni Association, our members can build their network and grow both personally and professionally.

Open Call: Insect Art Contest -- win up to $1,000

 The IAA, Art Department and Maryland Extension are collaborating on an Insect Art Contest and Show that will happen in October. The student competition has a prize of $1000 for 1st place and $750 for second place and the Open Call (the non-competitive show) is for any student, staff, faculty or community member to participate in. For the student competition, students will choose 1 of 6 insects presently on Maryland’s rare, threatened and endangered list, and depict that in a painting, photography or any visual art medium.

 The University of Maryland offers over 200 degree granting graduate programs. Attending Graduate School offers countless opportunities for professional, intellectual, and personal growth. Graduate degree holders can earn more money over a career and gain access to management and leadership roles. This semester, the Graduate School at the University of Maryland is holding virtual information sessions on earning a graduate degree. The “Why Graduate School” sessions will explore the benefits of pursuing a graduate education. We will also offer a session on “Preparing for Graduate School” where we will explore what it means to prepare for graduate school beyond having a strong academic record.

The Fair will be held on October 1 & 2 from 11-4 in The Hotel. 

• Each day will have different employers for you to meet; you can view all employers who will be participating here. 

• I have also compiled a list of AGNR-specific employers participating in this spreadsheet, because employer registration is fluid, this list is updated every few days. 

Given how competitive the current job market is, I want to offer some additional advice to help you make the most out of the Career Fair:

• Now more than ever it’s important that you review the list of employers who will be attending each day to make a plan for your participation

• Approach employers with an open mind, and seek out organizations that you find interesting, not just ones that are only hiring for your major

• Consider how the skills from your major may be applied in different fields—this can open you up to new opportunities!

If that sounds like you, get ready because the Fall 2026 Intern for a Day (IFAD) student orientation opens on Monday, September 14, 2026!

What is Intern for a Day?

Intern for a Day helps UMD undergraduate students explore and gain exposure to industries of interest through either a:

• 1-day job shadowing experience, OR

• 60-minute virtual informational interview.       

NOTE: All students must complete the mandatory orientation even if you have participated before, in order to be eligible for the program.

We are looking for people concerned about environmental issues who want to take action. For 35 years, our yearlong, paid program has prepared recent college graduates to launch careers in environmental organizing and advocacy by providing hands-on experience running campaigns with groups like the Environment America, Arctic Defense Campaign, the Wilderness Society and more. We then connect our graduates to jobs in the environmental and social change movement.

Protecting the environment is the most important challenge facing our world. To win now and build a strong foundation for lasting progress, we need people who know how to organize: to run organizations and campaigns that will inspire the support and action we need to save our environment. 

We’re accepting the top 20 candidates for our 2027-2028 program. Graduates will join our nearly 450 alumni who are leading environmental campaigns and organizations across the country. If you’re passionate about the environment and ready to learn and practice the craft of organizing after graduation, apply today!

REC Trek field trip- October 9th at Upper Marlboro Research and Education Center

 

Join AGNR Academic Programs for a tour a field day at the Upper Marlboro Research and Education Center - Friday, October 9th from 12-4pm.

Learn first-hand from the researchers in the field about the work happening at the Center including trials on tomatoes or beans, to high tech agricultural sensors to help with irrigation. 

We'll provide the transportation to and from the site.
