Precision Ag Internship for Environmental Science or Agriculture Students

Research Support Instruments (RSI) is looking for interns to assist with a strategically important product development effort using Drone-based multispectral sensors to capture and process data.  Last year’s intern team significantly contributed to the development of the current product generation.  This year’s team will develop the next generation and set the foundation for commercial production. These data products will include vegetative indices, such as Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NVDI) images. Resulting data products are used by farmers, academic institutions and governments to improve the lives of a country’s citizens by predicting yield as well as determining the need for water, fertilizer and insecticide use (Precision Agriculture).
RSI needs self-starters who can work in a small team to solve complex interdisciplinary problems with minimal oversight.  The desire to learn and apply new skills is essential. This position is integral to the success of the project and you will have the opportunity to demonstrate your skills and learn new ones as a significant member of the development team.

The RSI office is in Lanham, Maryland and has enjoyed key roles in Government and commercial space experiments and technology demonstrations.  Examples include the recently launched Heliospheric Imager on the Parker Solar Probe, NOAA’s new GOES East and West Weather satellites, the highly-successful NRL Clementine lunar mapping mission, the long-term monitoring of atmospheric ozone, and innovative plasma physics research.
Data Analysis for Satellite Image Processing from a Drone-Based Multispectral Sensor Suite
Degree:  Engineering, Environmental Science, Agriculture

Summer Goals:
- Produce bi-weekly crop data products (crop health, crop yield, stress indicators)
-Maintain and enhance the data processing pipeline
- Produce final crop yield and health reports by working with RSI university partner on agricultural correlation to data sets

You will have the opportunity to provide real-world agricultural data (NDVI) in the same manner as the Department of Agriculture generates products using LandSat data. The intent is to develop scientific quality, geo-rectified image sets that can be used to augment LandSat data products by increasing the temporal frequency of crop reports.  This enables farmers to identify and address issues to positively impact crop health.

An important task will be the validation of these data products to the actual results in the studied fields.  Create and present the weekly production of to the team and management. Provide feedback and modify software based on usability and effectiveness.  Collaborate with the image processing engineer to verify and improve algorithms.

Skills:
-Python programming experience
-MATLAB experience (bonus)
-Manage and analyze data structures
- Familiarity with optics, cameras, and some of the details of image processing
