The Pennington Marine Science Center located at Camp Emerald Bay (owned and operated by the Western Los Angeles County Council, Boy Scouts of America since 1925) on Catalina Island has paid internships open for the Spring, Summer and Fall seasons. They have the largest aquarium facility on the island housing a live collection of over 125 species of fish and invertebrates that are collected each year with the help of interns. Intern responsibilities include animal husbandry, life support system monitoring and maintenance, water quality testing, marine science/informal outdoor education, SCUBA diving for specimens, ROV operations and small boat handling.
In addition, Summer Interns are eligible to apply for a $1000 scholarship that can be used to fund their college education. Interns will also receive training and certification as PSI-PCI Fill Station Operators and Divers Alert Network Diving Emergency Management Providers which includes Basic Life Support and CPR, AED administration, treatment of hazardous marine life injuries and Oxygen administration for diving emergencies. The internship provides valuable opportunities and guidance for undergraduates seeking experience in the field as well as for recent graduates during their gap year. They are proud that nearly all of their former interns get accepted into graduate school or find employment in the public aquarium and aquaculture professions. Details on each specific season can be read by clicking their respective titles below:
