PAID POSITION: ENTOMOLOGY UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH TECHNICIAN

Salary: $15/hour; maximum of 20 hours/week during the semester and 40 hours a week during the
summer
Duration: One year depending on satisfactory performance.
Position description: The Krishnan Lab in the Entomology department at the University of
Maryland, College Park, is seeking an undergraduate research technician (maximum 20
hours/week). The position will start in June 2023. The undergraduate student will help set up
butterfly and plant colonies, maintain them, and assist a graduate student with toxicology
experiments. Most work will be undertaken in the lab and greenhouse, with minimal field work.
The position could require working on some weekends/holidays.
Primary responsibilities:
1. Setting up and maintaining eastern-tailed blue and monarch butterfly colonies.
2. Setting up and maintaining clover and milkweed plants in the greenhouse.
3. Assisting graduate student with pesticide toxicity bioassays.
4. Noting down observations and taking photos/videos.
5. Entering data into spreadsheets.
Required qualifications:
1. Ability to work 20 hours/week throughout the year.
2. Ability to perform repetitive tasks precisely and consistently.
3. Ability to work independently and as part of a team (must be confirmed by references).
Preferred qualifications:
1. Experience rearing insects and/or plants.
2. Experience undertaking laboratory work.
3. Career goals in science, agriculture, or entomology.
