I'm writing to let you know that the FY23 First Year Book, Smashing Statues: The Rise and Fall of America's Public Monuments is now available.
Smashing Statues is an extensive history of the memorials we build, why we build them, and asks us to consider the history behind some of the most revered statues. Author, lawyer, professor and an authority on the deliberate destruction of art, Erin L. Thompson leads readers through the past, present, and future of public monuments. The book provides us with the opportunity to consider how we decide what monuments should be built and how we decide when they should be removed.
The book is free for all students, faculty and staff. New students may pick up a copy at FreeFest from 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM on McKeldin Mall this Saturday. After Saturday, the book is available at the Stamp Studies Union Desk. Faculty and staff may pick up a book now outside 2110 Marie Mount Hall.
