Travel Abroad: Internship Opportunity with Northeast Maglev and Central Japan Railway
Central Japan Railway (JR Central) and Northeast Maglev invite students to apply for a unique summer internship. This hybrid, international program welcomes students of all majors to explore high-speed rail innovation.
Participants will learn how JR Central safely transports over 400,000 passengers daily, study its high-speed rail operations, and explore the development of the next-generation Superconducting Maglev (SCMAGLEV). They’ll also gain insight into JR Central’s global expansion strategies. Northeast Maglev, based in Baltimore, is working to bring SCMAGLEV to the U.S., starting with a 15-minute D.C.–Baltimore connection and a future D.C.–New York route in just 60 minutes, transforming Northeast Corridor travel.
Internship Format
Virtual sessions: From June 10 through 13 and 17 through 20, students will participate in virtual evening learning sessions with members of JR Central.
Visit to Japan and Central Japan Railway: From July 22 through August 1, students will be fully immersed in the lifestyle and businesses practices of the company. This includes an inside look at business and rail operations, cultural experiences, and rides on the Japanese high-speed rail.
Northeast Maglev internship: For a week prior to and after the Japan trip, students will spend time with the Northeast Maglev team to learn about the U.S.-based project. Students will reflect on the significance of the SCMAGLEV, working with marketing team members to apply lessons learned in Japan to the U.S. market.
Students must be able to work in the Baltimore, MD office and hold a valid passport to be considered eligible for this opportunity.
While this is an unpaid internship, students selected by Northeast Maglev will receive food, travel, and lodging subsidies. Although this is a JR Central internship, Northeast Maglev will process all applications.
The application deadline is March 7.
