This is an environmental education position located within the division of interpretation at Assateague Island National Seashore. Although considered a volunteer assignment, the intern will work alongside park rangers and have similar duties and performance requirements.
Location: Maryland District or Virginia District
Required Background:
- College level academic background in natural science or education preferred, but not necessary
- Public speaking and writing skills
- Valid driver's license
Dates of Service: This is approximately a 3-month position requiring weekend work. The workweek consists of 5 days (40 hours) with 2 consecutive days off. IDEALLY, the applicants are available for the entire internship from May 18 through September 4, 2026. The start and end dates are flexible.
Duties and Responsibilities: Summer interns will participate in a two-week training program and will spend considerable time learning about the resource and preparing resource education programs. After training, the intern will perform nearly all duties and programs expected of a salaried ranger. Examples of interpretation programs include, bay discovery programs, touch tank talks, crabbing and clamming demonstrations, and kayak tours. The intern will help staff the visitor center information desk and interpret the center's exhibits, maps, and aquatic specimens in the saltwater aquariums and touch tank. The intern will be expected to independently ‘rove’ to make visitor contacts.
Housing, Uniforms, and Stipend: NO HOUSING IS AVAILABLE. The National Park Service will provide uniform shirts; interns must provide khaki pants and shorts, socks, belt and shoes. Interns receive a reimbursement for food and living expenses $40/day worked.
Work Environment:
Assateague Island can be windy and cold in late spring and hot and humid in the summer. Biting flies, mosquitoes and ticks are a natural part of the resource experience. The intern can expect physically demanding work during outdoor programs.
