Montgomery County Government Climate Internship - Summer 2019

The County Executive’s Office in Montgomery County, Maryland, is seeking a part-time or full-time summer intern. This is a competitive internship for qualified undergraduate or graduate students with diverse backgrounds who have strong interest, education, or experience in climate, sustainability, and clean and renewable energy policy. This is an unpaid internship and is intended for the educational benefit of the intern.

Montgomery County has been a national leader in responding to the challenge of climate change. In addition to setting aggressive greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets, Montgomery County government builds energy efficient green buildings, reduces fuel consumption through green fleet operations, generates clean solar power on County facilities, and continually improves energy efficiency of existing buildings. Montgomery County monitors and analyzes energy and water use data to identify and prioritize opportunities to save energy, save money, and reduce pollution. As of Fiscal Year 2016, Montgomery County achieved carbon neutrality for County government buildings and fleet operations.

The intern will participate with County employees with projects on diverse climate and energy issues such as:

  • Climate change policy and planning
  • Climate adaptation/resilience policy
  • Energy efficiency and renewable energy policy


The intern will work closely with County employees to gain experience by attending meetings and briefings, conducting research, writing summaries, etc. We will work with the intern to assign projects that will increase their knowledge in energy and climate issues while supporting their strengths and interests.

The successful intern will possess the following qualities and skills:

Strong academic and/or work experience in climate and energy policy and sustainability and a strong interest in and learning more about this field.


  • Enthusiasm for the process of finding solutions to climate and energy challenges
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Independent and self-motivated worker; eager to ask questions
  • Diligence in research and high attention to detail
  • Values high-quality work and importance of deadlines

Internship dates: June 10, 2019 – August 16, 2019 (dates are flexible)
