CCMA AmeriCorps VISTA – After School Math Success for Underserved Students

The University of Maryland’s America Reads*America Counts*Partners in Print program helps local
children master basic reading and math skills and get on track for college and promising careers.
Approximately 220 UM students work as reading and math mentors in 20 Prince George’s County
elementary schools, many of whom earn Federal Work-Study to pay for college expenses. Recognized as a national model, the America Reads*America Counts*Partners in Print program is part of Leadership & Community Service-Learning team, in the Adele H. Stamp Student Union.

The America Counts program is designed to help elementary school children improve their math skills and be more successful academically. The CCMA AmeriCorps VISTA reports to the Coordinator of America Reads*America Counts*Partners in Print (AR*AC*PNP) and serves as part of the Leadership & Community Service-Learning team.
Specific responsibilities include:

• Participate in recruitment and selection of college student mentors and team leaders.
• Supervise and advise mentors and team leaders with an emphasis on leadership
• development.
• Conduct regular site visits at participating elementary schools and developing and
• maintaining strong relationships with math specialists, trainers, and teachers.
• Observe mentoring sessions, offering feedback, and providing on-going support to math
• mentors.
• Work with AR*AC*PNP staff to design, implement, facilitate, and evaluate curriculum,
• mentor training, and reflection sessions.
• Coordinate Maryland Counts Day, which involves bringing all America Counts elementary
• school participants to campus for a day.
• Develop and update training materials and handbooks.
• Collect and analyze program evaluation data, utilizing data to write grants and grant reports. Participate as an active member of the Leadership and Community-Service Learning staff
• team.

This is a 40 hour per week, 12-month AmeriCorps VISTA position that begins on August 5, 2019. The stipend for this CCMA AmeriCorps VISTA position is $791.70 every two weeks. Upon completing the 12-months of service, the person in this position can choose either an educational award worth $6,095 to pay for further education or $1,800 cash. This position reports directly to the LCSL Coordinator for America Reads*America Counts*Partners in Print.

Qualifications: Minimum qualifications include Bachelor’s Degree and a valid driver’s license (with a maximum of six points). Qualified candidates will also have good people skills and be able to
communicate well both verbally and in writing. Preferred qualifications would include experience
working with project management, partnership development, data analysis and evaluation, and
teamwork.
