Internship Summary
The Water CKM Project seeks a Communications Intern with excellent written and verbal communications skills, knowledge and understanding of digital media outlets, and experience conducting research. The intern hired will need demonstrated ability to show initiative, be a self-starter, and be task/project-oriented. The internship will provide the intern with valuable communications experience in the international water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) sector. The period of performance for the internship will be from September 2019 to May 2020.
Project Information
The Water Communications and Knowledge Management Project (Water CKM) supports USAID’s Water Office and its partners to enhance communication and outreach to increase awareness of USAID water program activities and results to a wide range of stakeholders.
The project produces/manages a wide range of communication products and platforms: Globalwaters.org, the bimonthly magazine Global Waters (on the Medium platform), the biweekly Water Currents newsletter, the Global Waters Radio podcast series, and The Global Water and Development Report of Water and Sanitation Activities annual report. We also provide social media support through the @USAIDWater Twitter handle and amplify the reach of USAID’s water work through LinkedIn, Facebook, and YouTube.
Location: Arlington, VA
Position Type: Paid Internship, 10 hours per week, September 2019-May 2020
Internship Responsibilities

- Write blogs, conduct research, and contribute content for Globalwaters.org
- Support social media outreach efforts
- Build up water sector photo collection
- Attend/support local/virtual water sector events (live-tweeting, blogging, note-taking)
- Design outreach materials for print or social media
- Copyedit
Required Qualifications
- Undergraduate (Junior-level or higher) student majoring in Communications, Journalism, or related field
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Knowledge of social media
- Demonstrated ability to show initiative, be a self-starter, and task/project-oriented
- Ability to take direction and multi-task
- Experience with writing and storytelling/blogging
- Experience with research
- Current U.S. work authorization required.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Interest in international development and/or the water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) sector
