Arundel Rivers Federation Watershed Restoration Internship

Description 
The Arundel Rivers Federation (previously the South River Federation), a watershed restoration and monitoring non-profit organization based in Edgewater, Maryland is seeking an intern for the summer of 2020. This is an office and field-based position, however the majority of work will be outdoors and at times in challenging conditions. The Federation is seeking candidates who have knowledge and experience in ecology, fisheries studies, conservation landscaping, stormwater and hydrology, and/or water quality monitoring, along with knowledge of and interest in the outdoors. 

Applicant Requirements 
The successful candidate will be a student or recent graduate of a two or four-year environmental/natural resource program, and/or have practical experience in fish sampling/studies, conservation landscaping, water quality monitoring, or a similar background. Candidates with a working knowledge of Microsoft Office (especially Excel) are preferred. Reliable transportation to and from the Federation office in Edgewater is required. Applicants must have a driver’s license and a clean driving record. A Certificate of Boating Safety Education is a plus but not required. 

Internship Tasks and Objectives 
This internship will provide an opportunity to gain direct experience with the analysis of local watershed issues, and the hands-on restoration and adaptive management and monitoring of watershed and habitat functions to the South, West, and Rhode River watersheds. Work will primarily be with Restoration and Monitoring staff, but the intern may occasionally work with other Federation staff, including the Executive Director and Volunteer & Outreach Coordinator, as needed. Primary intern tasks are: 
Restoration:
  • Participate as a crewmember in the Federation’s annual electrofishing study. 
  • Assist staff with volunteer events focused on project maintenance and plantings.
  • Observe stream restoration and stormwater Best Management Practice construction. 
  • Assist staff with writing and assembling grant proposals. 
  • Work independently on restoration sites to perform tasks including installation of native plants, control of non-native plants, and other maintenance tasks as assigned. 
Monitoring / RIVERKEEPER:
  • Assist with tidal water quality monitoring via boat in the South, West, and Rhode Rivers. 
  • Calibrate water quality monitoring equipment. • Land-based collection of water samples for bacterial analysis. 
  • Periodic transcription of written data to Excel. 
  • Assist with installation and maintenance of water quality equipment at restoration sites. 
Schedule, Compensation, and Standards 
The internship timeframe is from mid-May through September 2020. Exact start and end dates within this timeframe are negotiable. The intern will have a flexible schedule to satisfy their other responsibilities. Compensation for this internship is $12/hour for approximately 300 total hours. If academic credit is available or required for participation in this internship, we will gladly work with you in meeting the requirements for receiving credit. Beyond lunch and personal transportation to the Federation's office on workdays, we want to ensure that the intern does not incur any costs. The Federation vehicle will generally be available for transportation to and from work sites. If the Federation vehicle is not available, compensation for personal vehicle mileage to and from work sites is available. Sunscreen and insect repellent will be provided for outdoor work. 

Required Gear 
The intern will need to provide comfortable clothing for working outdoors in a variety of conditions, including hot weather, cool weather, and light rain. Close-toed shoes are required for outdoor work. All necessary tools and Personal Protective Equipment (Personal floatation device, hard hat, highvisibility safety apparel, gloves, etc.) will be provided by the Federation.

State Department Fellowships

Are you interested in joining the Foreign Service of the U.S. Department of State or the USAID Foreign Service? Representatives from the Pickering, Rangel, and Payne Fellowship Programs will be here for a campus visit on February 27 to meet with juniors, seniors, and recent graduates. This event is co-hosted by the Federal and Global Fellows Programs and the National Scholarships. The Pickering, Rangel, and Payne programs seek applications from students/alumni who are US citizens with financial need, especially those who are members of minority groups historically underrepresented in the Foreign Service, and women. 

The Pickering and Rangel Graduate Fellowships provide financial support through two years of graduate study, internships, mentoring, and professional development activities leading to an appointment in the Foreign Service of the U.S. Department of State. Both programs have mid-September 2020 deadlines. The Payne International Development Fellowship provides similar support through two years leading to an appointment with the USAID Foreign Service. It has an early November deadline.

They can be in their senior year of their undergraduate studies, graduating by June 2021, or they can be college graduates.

Maryland Agricultural Education Foundation Scholarship

The Maryland Agricultural Education Foundation is a 501c3 non-governmental nonprofit established in 1989. Through teacher workshops, scholarships, grants, Mobile Labs and Showcases, the Maryland FFA and advocacy, the Foundation pursues its mission to promote the understanding and appreciation of the importance of agriculture in everyone’s lives. The Foundation is funded through grants, service fees, generous donations from organizations, businesses and individuals and revenues from the Ag Tag license plate.

The Maryland Agricultural Education Foundation (MAEF) is now accepting applications for its 2020 Academic Scholarships. MAEF Academic Scholarships are open to rising junior or senior undergraduate or graduate students enrolled in majors leading to careers in agricultural education or Extension education. Qualified candidates should complete and postmark their application by April 1, 2020.

United Fresh Produce Association Food Safety Team Summer Internship

Want to get out of the lab and explore an exciting food safety career pathway in our nation’s capital? Are you interested in a career at the crossroads between industry, government, and academia? Consider applying for a summer internship at the United Fresh Produce Association, the national trade association for the fresh produce industry, located three blocks from the White House. 
Get a glimpse into how federal food safety policy is developed, how foodborne illness outbreaks are handled, and how science and education promote the implementation of risk-based preventive approaches by the industry. Learn the unique role of a trade association and understand the varying backgrounds and skill sets that influence food safety priorities and practices. Spend up to 8 weeks with our food safety team, with a flexible starting date. The internship will be project-based, based on the association’s need with some flexibility given dependent on the intern’s experience and interests.

The Jim Claxton Scholarship Fund

The Jim Claxton Scholarship Fund was initiated during the Spring of 2011 in order to honor Jim and his contributions to the Mid-Atlantic area turfgrass industry and financially support students while pursuing a college degree. Jim worked as a salesman for Newsom Seed from the early 1990’s until soon before his passing on March 20, 2013. He made great contributions to turfgrass related businesses during this period, especially businesses involved in turf production.

The Jim Claxton Scholarship Fund allows for a single, annual $500.00 reward to be issued to a winning applicant prior to the fall college semester. In addition to a possible interview with one or more Maryland Turfgrass Association Board Members, the following criteria will be considered by the MTA board while deciding who will be awarded this scholarship:

  • The applicant should be a current high school senior or be enrolled full time in a two year Associate Degree or four year Bachelor Degree college or university program. Proof of college or university enrollment in an Associate Degree or Bachelor Degree program may be requested by the MTA board.
  • The applicant should reside in the Mid-Atlantic area or be enrolled in a college or university located in the Mid-Atlantic area.
  • The applicant should have earned a high school or current college level GPA of at least 2.5. A transcript should be submitted along with the application.
  • Preference may be given to students enrolled in a turfgrass related field.
  • Preference may be given to students with experience in turf production and/or turf maintenance.
  • An essay of one page or less, using 12 pitch x New Roman or equivalent with a one inch margin. The essay should include how you intend to utilize your Associate or Bachelor degree.
  • A current high school and/or college level transcript and up to three letters of recommendation can be submitted with the completed application.

AREC361: Study Abroad in Liberia

AREC 361 is a 3-credit short-term study abroad course to Liberia starting this summer. Students have the unique opportunity to gain hands-on, technical experience implementing agricultural extension activities for a local farming community in Ganta, Liberia, in partnership with the Liberia International Christian College. 

Tentative dates are May 26-June 5, 2020. Because this trip is through Education Abroad, students are eligible for financial assistance and select scholarship opportunities. The Farm at Our House Jobs and Internships

Job Titles: 1-2 Farm Hands and 2-3 Summer Interns
Start Date: February 15th, 2020/ May 20, 2020

The Farm at Our House is a certified organic mixed vegetable farm committed to sustainable farming practices located on land owned by Our House Inc., a residential rehabilitation program for young men in the juvenile justice or foster care system. We farm on 7 acres including 3 high tunnels and 1 greenhouse and manage 10 additional acres. You can find us at the Silver Spring farmers market, our two CSA pick up locations and our produce is sold at local grocery stores and restaurants.

Responsibilities:
  • Fieldwork: Implement daily priorities and policies as determined by farm owner and farm manager. Lead and perform field work, including planting, cultivation, irrigation, harvesting, post-harvest handling of crops; assist with mushroom production, equipment maintenance, repair and requisition, greenhouse and high tunnel maintenance and supervision and property landscaping; Identify crop selection including crops specific to Southeast Asia. 
  • Marketing and Business Development: Possibly represent farm at weekly farmers markets or CSA pickup site; ensure delivery of produce to wholesale customers; manage produce allocation among market, wholesale and CSA; additional administrative tasks as needed.
  • Administrative: Ensure work is documented; sales are recorded and organic certification documentation requirements are met.  
Requirements:
Enthusiasm and Curiosity for Farming (Summer Interns and Farm Hands); Bachelor's or Associate’s degree in any field preferred (Farm Hand); Driver’s License (Farm Hand)
Ability to do physical labor for long periods of time including activities that involve bending down for extended periods of time. (Both); Six months of experience farming or horticultural experience with the application of sustainable agriculture principles and organic farming preferred (Farm Hand Only); Experience working with at-risk-youth preferred (Farm Hand Only)

Sign Up for the Ag Day Livestock Show

Spring semester has already started which means Ag Day aka Maryland Day will soon be upon us! For those who do not know, Block and Bridle hosts an Ag Day Livestock Show every spring on Maryland Day where students from any Major/skill level are allowed to participate in, learn good showmanship skills for their desired species, and compete in front of real livestock show judges. Students can choose to show lambs, swine, dairy, and/or beef heifers. Each species will have a few coaches that will educate students on how to properly handle and show that specific animal along with what kind of questions the judges may ask. 

For those who have participated in Ag Day before, we hope you had an amazing time last year and wish to invite you to participate once again! If you have coached in the past or are interested in coaching this year, there is an Ag Day Coaching Application linked here. Coaching is a great opportunity to improve your leadership skills and is highly recommended. This year we will be having students join an ELMS Course to satisfy their mandatory orientation session where they will be briefed of all the rules and regulations regarding animal handling and will have access to the required forms. In order to do so, students must fill in the Ag Day 2020 Sign Up form linked here. The form must be done by February 23rd and the total fees must be paid by then (unless there is an issue and the Ag Day Coordinator has been informed). 

The following are the mandatory show fees:
  • BEEF- $25 (Can only show if a person has previous handling experience) 
  • DAIRY- $25 
  • LAMBS- $20 
  • SWINE- $15 
*Note that the prices are different based on the time commitment each species requires thus you can assume Beef requires the most time (4-5 hrs) and swine requires the least time (2hrs) per week. In the instance that you choose to show more than one species, you are required to pay fees for all species.

Anita C. Leight Estuary Center Environmental Research Internship

The Otter Point Creek Alliance and the Chesapeake Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve in Maryland (CBNERR-MD) co-sponsor a summer research internship. Internships are open to qualified undergraduate students to conduct a summer research project within the Otter Point Creek Component of CBNER-MD. The Maryland reserve is one of 29 Reserves throughout the country that serve as field laboratories for the betterment of coastal zone management through research, education, and stewardship. 

Otter Point Creek is an ideal site for a broad range of research topics with a diversity of habitats. Students can work with the Park Manager to develop their own research project from the topics listed below:
  • Submerged Aquatic Vegetation (SAV) mapping or species cataloging/abundance.
  • State-rare wetland plant identification, surveys and study
  • Wild Rice and Phragmites mapping, an update to legacy surveys
  • Micro-plastics survey in tidal wetland and estuarine habitats
  • Pre and post storm water quality monitoring with a focus on turbidity/water clarity
Anita C. Leight Research Interns will receive research support and mentoring from trained personnel. They receive a stipend as well as access to research equipment and supplies.

Good Dog Farm Full and Part-Time Positions Available

Position Description
2020 will be Good Dog Farm's first season with a full-time farm crew, which is an exciting opportunity for anyone looking for first hand experience in scaling up a farm operation. Because we are a small, relatively new business, we need a team of folks who show up ready to move quickly and efficiently to get the job done and who also enjoy working on a fun, inclusive team. We are hiring three to four individuals with full- and part-time positions available. At least one year’s experience is preferred but not required for the right candidate. You will be working directly with us, so even though we don’t offer internships at this time, we’re happy to answer any and all questions while we work together! Primary weekly responsibilities will be harvesting, washing and packing for our CSA program and farmer’s market. Other tasks will include seeding, transplanting, hoeing, trellising, and hand weeding.

Our workdays will typically be weekdays 8:00 am - 4:00 pm with a 30 minute lunch break. Hours can be flexible for candidates interested in working at our Saturday farmers market. Pay is highly competitive and based on experience. We will meet after 60 days of working together to discuss how the season is going and the possibility of a raise. You can also bring home lots of delicious organic
vegetables!

Job Requirements:
  • A desire and willingness to work outside (in the rain and the heat & cold too!)
  • Reliable transportation to and from the farm
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs repeatedly and easily, and work physically all day
  • Ability to work well in teams
  • A general can-do attitude and willingness to learn
  • Generally feel comfortable around dogs
About Good Dog Farm 
Good Dog Farm is a USDA certified organic vegetable farm in Parkton, Maryland (about 40 minutes north of Baltimore.) We are Bryan Alexander and Joanna Winkler - founders and co-owners of Good Dog Farm, and we are also married to each other. We founded the farm in June of 2016 after many years of farm management experience. We supply our customers in the Baltimore region with delicious, nutritious, certified organic food of the highest quality. We will be growing on about 10 acres on multiple sites in 2020 where we use sustainable growing practices to protect our soil and waterways. Our farm provides a diversity of crops for our Community Supported Agriculture program and one farmer’s market, plus unique varieties of storage crops like potatoes, winter squash and sweet potatoes for wholesale customers. Our name comes from our shared love of our two dogs who remind us to live simply and have fun every day.
