Plant Breeding Research Support Position at Corteva
Corteva Agriscience is seeking individuals to work at our New Holland, PA location during the summer of 2021. This experience provides individuals with a broad-based exposure on the day-to-day activities of a field research and corn breeding station.
A key component of the position will be the collection of high quality data on specific traits of economic importance. Some traveling with overnight stays in Maryland, Delaware and Pennsylvania may be required. This position provides an excellent opportunity for research experience in the seed industry.
- Education focus in Agriculture Science, Agronomy, Plant Physiology, Plant Pathology, Genetics, Biology or a related field is preferred
- Agricultural background beneficial
- Must be willing to relocate or commute to the New Holland, PA area for the duration of employment

Urban Farm Coordinator Position at Mona Center
Urban Farm Coordinator Positions
Location: 5859 Allentown Way, Temple Hills, MD and remote
Commitment: February 1 – November 30, 2021 @ approximately 10 hours per week
Compensation: $14.00 per hour

About the Mona Center Urban Farm
The Catholic Charities – Susan Denison Mona Center is an integrated multi-services facility that provides critical resources to the residents of Prince George’s County. In partnership with the University of Maryland and Luminis Healthcare (formerly Doctors Community Hospital), Catholic Charities offers comprehensive services focusing on health and wellness, feeding and nutrition, and legal services.
The Mona Center Urban Farm was created on-site to facilitate community engagement and grow fresh produce for the residents of the neighborhood. The farm was started in 2019 and now consists of a pilot project of eighteen raised beds for vegetable production. With proven success, the project hopes to grow to occupy the full 1/3 acre of land available. 100% of the farm’s produce currently goes to the Catholic Charities Enterprise Kitchen, which prepares it into hot meals that are distributed for free to food-insecure residents in Washington, DC and Montgomery and Prince George’s Counties. As the farm and its outputs grow, the vegetables and herbs may be used in Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) and ProduceRx programs run by the Mona Center.
Position Description
The Urban Farm Coordinators work as a team of two to oversee day-to-day operations of the farm, including infrastructure planning, crop production, marketing, outreach, and educational programming. The Coordinators collaborate with Catholic Charities staff, Luminis Healthcare staff, and University of Maryland faculty advisors to bring farm projects and community events to fruition. The work may be divided as the Coordinators find appropriate; for example, one Coordinator may work primarily remotely on marketing, grant writing, and other tasks, while the other Coordinator is primarily responsible for on-site farm production and volunteer events. These are paid positions that may also be used to fulfill an academic internship requirement.
Responsibilities
- Cultivate accessible and inviting farm spaces for the community to explore, ask questions and gain skills in urban farming and home gardening
- Generate and execute an annual crop plan focusing on culturally relevant fruits, vegetables, and herbs for the community
- Crop maintenance, including planting, watering, weeding, fertilizing, mulching, irrigation, trellising, pruning, pest management, etc.
- Weekly harvests and deliveries following food safety protocols, in coordination with Catholic Charities Enterprise Kitchen
- Participate in farm infrastructure planning and development
- Lead weekly volunteer events for community members that offer pre-determined garden activities and provide orientation to the space, its purpose and relationship to other Mona Center functions
- Organize 1-2 community outreach events per season for local residents and other stakeholders
- Conduct outreach and build awareness of the farm and its brand through community interviews, regular social media posts, developing website content, and contributing to articles and other publications
- Maintain internal buy-in and enthusiasm for food growing by communicating progress to project partners
Qualifications
- Commitment to and experience in community work, education and food justice
- Minimum of two years’ experience growing vegetables, fruits, herbs, and flowers
- Experience constructing garden facilities, including raised beds and drip irrigation
- Experience with succession planting, pest management, and healthy soil management
- Experience teaching and leading volunteers
- Excellent interpersonal communication and leadership skills – comfortable working with groups of people of diverse ages and backgrounds
- Ability to work independently while also engaging in collaborative, team-based work
- Highly adaptable and creative
- Excellent time management and organizational skills, ability to prioritize and set boundaries
- Familiarity with managing a professional social media account
- Eager to work hard and get dirty in all kinds of weather
- Aptitude for physically demanding work (the ability to safely lift and carry 50 pounds repeatedly)
- Driver’s license and access to a personal vehicle

Position Summary/Purpose of Position:
Under the general supervision of the Area Extension Director for Southern Maryland, the Master Gardener Program Assistant performs a variety of duties to support educational activities related to gardening and horticulture, including field days, fairs, meetings, field tours, workshops and seminars. Primary responsibilities are to provide support for operations of the Charles County Master Gardener Program. Incumbent will support ongoing work, special projects and team-oriented assignments as well as ongoing education, outreach and program marketing plans.
Responsibilities:
- Organize and conduct programs for and with the Charles County Master Gardener Program, including volunteer coordination.
- Attend monthly Master Gardner meetings and key events throughout the year.
- Organize both basic and advanced training programs for the Master Gardener Program.
- Assist in recruitment, training and support of volunteers; prepare and maintain volunteer and member enrollment and re-enrollment files.
- Provide support in responding to requests for information, including help in writing newsletters, press releases, brochures and distribution of written material as needed.
- Participate as a team member with other faculty and staff to assist with educational programs that meet the needs of agricultural producers in Charles County
- Present topics and lead discussion at meetings, workshops and other program activities as needed.
- Perform general office tasks such as monitoring and ordering standard program supplies; collating and assembling documents; photocopying correspondence and reports; attend meetings and take and distribute minutes, and perform additional duties as required.
- Participate in professional development opportunities to keep abreast of current research, new educational methods, as well as UME’s administrative procedures, etc.
Qualifications:
Required –
- High School Diploma or GED AND Five years’ experience performing a variety of duties in support of the teaching, demonstration, and advising work of Extension agents or in community outreach, health care, research, or social services programs.
- Personal transportation and valid driver’s license required.
- Employee will be required to use their personal automobile while conducting official business.
- Some evening and weekend hours required.
- Occasionally, regional or state travel is required for training and programming.
- This position is subject to a Criminal History Record Check. Employment is contingent upon successful completion and clearance of the Criminal History Record Check.
Preferred –
- Bachelor’s degree or training certificate in horticultural sciences
- 2 years or more experience managing volunteers
- Community outreach and education experience in the area of Horticulture and/or natural resources education

Tree Climber Position at USDA APHIS
If selected for this position, you will serve as a Tree Climber
assigned to the Asian Longhorned Beetle (ALB) Emergency Program.
Responsibilities include protecting American agriculture and natural resources
from endemic and exotic pests in order to enhance the competitiveness of
American agricultural exports.
- Inspect trees through ground and aerial survey for pests or specific indications of pest injury or infestation.
- Provide quality assurance surveillance of the tree survey activities performed by program staff and staff from other organizations such as contractors, federal agencies, and state agencies.
- Climb trees of heights routinely exceeding 100 feet using a rope and harness to inspect for pests, executes limb walks of distances of 20 feet or more.
- As circumstances warrant, uses spikes or spurs; operates and maintains hand saws, chainsaws and knives; and works in trees often near power lines, using climbing ropes and saddles.
- Utilizing reference materials such as tree identification keys to identify every woody tree specific to the area and potential ALB host trees by genus and species.
- Collect tree material samples for use in the environmental monitoring of trees which have been chemically treated, for submission to identifiers or laboratories.
- Conduct tree inventories data such as diameter, property address, or location of trees using Global Positioning System (GPS) equipment and maps.
- Speak with property owners in order to obtain permission to climb trees on their property; this contact may be made by phone or in person.

Job Overview
A Project Engineer will assist the Estimator for gathering quotes and assisting with proposals for projects. This key role will provide administrative support to keep the projects on pace and to assist in meeting deadlines.
Responsibilities and Duties
- Research material and job cost pricing for Project Manager approval. This would include materials, toilets, hotels, dumpsters, equipment hauling, etc.
- Order materials per Project Manager requests and assist with material supplier coordination.
- Set up and maintain all job files.
- Document management; contract documents, subcontractor documents, waiver of liens, vendor waivers, vender compliance, COIs, and all plan sets.
- Assist with the preparation of all change order requests; coordinate the estimating of all change orders with the project estimator or subcontractor; assist with informing all field staff that change the scope or original design of contract documents.
- Assist with the preparation and monitoring of the project schedule. Update the project schedule, as directed.
- Administrative support for Environmental Consulting and Construction staff.
- Properly code all invoices and enter job invoices that have been approved by Project Managers into Viewpoint.
- Assist Office Admin in printing plans.

OneUSDA internships offer on-the-job experience, mentorship, and training tailored to each student’s education, experience, and interests. Students gain valuable experience to enhance their educational goals and help shape their career choices.
In 2020, USDA hosted thousands of in-person and virtual internships around the country, many of which were through the through the federal Pathways Program.
