UMD Department of Entomology Undergraduate Summer Internship

The University of Maryland Department of Entomology is seeking some motivated and skilled undergraduates with an interest in Biological Control, pollinator conservation and Field Agro-ecology to join the ecological pest management and applied ecology group for summer paid internship positions. Research prospects will include using cover crops and flowering plants to manipulate beneficial arthropods and suppress insect and weed pests in vegetable and agronomic plantings. Work will consist also of research plot maintenance, arthropod and plant surveys and produce harvesting. Strong commitment to field work and a desire to be outdoors and remove weeds from research plots are essential as the job entails outside manual activities during the summer months. The ideal candidate will have some interest in field research, the great outdoors and have a valid driver license. Love & Carrots is DC’s foremost urban farming and edible landscaping company. We design, install and maintain organic urban farms, vegetable gardens, and native landscapes across DC, MD, and VA. Through our garden care & coaching program we provide expert garden maintenance, guidance, and education in almost 150 gardens every year, helping connect people to their food and inspiring local food production and farming inside the beltway. Since our inception in 2011 we've installed over 500 gardens and our clients include residents, local restaurants, and community organizations throughout the DMV.

The job:
We are seeking a full-time crew member to join our Garden Installation team.

As a member of the Installation Crew, you will work with a team to transform urban spaces into high-quality, productive, and beautiful vegetable gardens and landscapes. Installation crew members work 10 hour days, 4 days/week (Monday - Thursday) during the regular season, switching to 5 days/week in the winter.

Installation tasks Include:
  • Landscape installation - planting, edging, pruning, etc. (excluding lawn care)
  • Basic carpentry: building raised beds and trellises, simple fence assembly
  • Loading/driving trucks
  • Hauling mulch/soil/filling wheelbarrows
  • Installing drip irrigation systems
  • Planting vegetables, small perennials, trees and shrubs
  • Digging post-holes
  • Basic stepping stone pathways (dryset only)
Necessary Qualifications:
  • The ability to lift, dig, haul and generally work hard.
  • A valid driver's license and working personal vehicle required.
  • Experience with carpentry
  • The ability to work as part of a close knit team while following directions. Also, to work independently, take initiative, and lead as necessary.
  • Attention to detail and organization.
Preferred Experience in: (not required, but strongly favored)
  • Landscaping
  • Carpentry
  • Gardening/farming
  • An affinity for veggies, soil, urban farming, and local food!
Compensation:

Federal Fellows Program Event: Water Security/Environment/Law/Global Health Alumni Panel

Want to hear from thriving young professionals in the fields of water security, environmental protection, law, and global health? The Federal & Global Fellows Program is hosting a virtual panel event on March 31 from 5-6pm with three fantastic Federal & Global Fellow alumni.

Erin Hylton is a program analyst with the World Bank's Water Global Practice. Erin's previous experiences include: Department of State Virtual Student Foreign Service Program for the U.S.- Brazil Working Group on Climate Change, Climate Policy Researcher for the Brookings Institution, Marshall Scholarship, Boren Scholarship and Udall Scholarship. Earned a Master of Science degree in Hydrology & Sustainable Development from Imperial College London and a second Master of Science degree in Water Science, Policy & Management from Oxford University. At UMD Erin majored in Civil and Environmental Engineering and was a Federal Fellow in Energy and Environmental Policy 2011.

Mohammad Zia is a law student at Harvard Law School who has done research on energy policy and international development. Mohammad's previous experiences include: Fulbright Research Scholar (solar technology, economic development and policy), Luce Scholar (technology policy, renewable energy, peacebuilding), and Boren Scholarship (studying Arabic in Jordan). Earned a Master of Public Policy degree from Oxford University. At UMD, Mohammad majored in Global Diplomacy and Development (created his own major through the Individual Studies Program), and was a Global Fellow in U.S. Foreign Policy 2012.

Sana Haider is an M.S. candidate and Independent Researcher with Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, studying global health and population issues. Sana's previous experiences include: Research Data Coordinator at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, Fulbright Scholar (Philippines), JPSM Junior Research Fellow at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. At UMD Sana majored in Community Health and was a Federal Fellow in Public Health Policy 2016.

Maryland Nursery, Landscape, and Greenhouse Association Scholarship

The Maryland Nursery, Landscape, and Greenhouse Association announces the availability of several scholarships for college-aged horticulture students. The MNLGA Ornamental Horticulture Scholarship will award three $5,000 scholarships for eligible students in ornamental horticulture and landscape programs.

Provide Educational Access to Research & Learning in geocienceS (PEARLS) Project

Geoscience is one of the least diverse disciplines in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). This program will apply scientifically ratified best practices to Provide Educational Access to Research & Learning in geocienceS (PEARLS) for non-traditional geoscience majors, women, under-served, and underrepresented minorities (URM). The work will increase the awareness and access to the geosciences and will develop a diverse, globally competitive STEM workforce. The project will engage students in the geosciences through extracurricular experiences and training. The project provides a geoscience learning ecosystem with integrated experiences at the University of Maryland, College Park to help undergraduate upperclassmen from non-traditional geoscience majors and master's degree-seeking students transition into geosciences and engage in geoscience studies. Summer Institute of Change by UMD School of Public Policy

Join the University of Maryland School of Public Policy for the Summer Institute of Change  a free summer community-based experiential learning program for a new generation of public leadership. The program is focused on Prince George's County and will prepare you to enter the field of public policy, in the County and beyond.

This program is for sophomores and juniors at any of the three institutions: PGCC, Bowie State University, or the University of Maryland, College Park.

The virtual program will take place from June 1-July 9, 2021, and allow for students to learn about policy and governance from UMD faculty, while working with local government and nonprofit entities in PG County. This program tuition is free, with a small charge for fees. The application can be found here. Applications are due April 1, 2021.

Job Title: Takoma Park Farmers Market Market Manager
Required work time: Sundays, year-round, 8:00am-3:00pm

Primary Responsibilities:
Market Operational Oversight:
  • Manage the on-site, Sunday operational activities of the Takoma Park Farmers Market, including but not limited to: Transporting, setting up and breaking down of equipment and supplies required weekly at the market including tent, tables, traffic barriers and signs. A cart will be provided to move from nearby storage.
  • Set up market ATM and oversee ATM attendant.
  • Oversee ATM booth and gate functions as necessary and fill-in as required.
  • Run ATM EBT reports and count vendor tokens enter into spreadsheet at the conclusion of each market.
  • Distribute monthly checks to Vendors.
  • Support Vendors as required.
  • Ensure Vendors leave property clean at the end of the market
  • Work with Market Administrator to seamlessly integrate market-based Programs (Food Access Programs – SNAP/WIC/FMNP/MMM, Chef at Market and Events) into market.
  • Enforce TPFM Rules & Regulations fairly and consistently with customers
  • Ensure the safety of everyone at the market by enforcing all safety rules, keeping an eye out for hazards, and taking action as necessary.
  • Take photos of vendor products during market and post on social media during market hours or send to Market Administrator.
  • Keep Vendor attendance.
  • On-site point of contact for Pop Up Vendors. Assist with helping them find location.
  • Execute promotions and events. Typically 1 per quarter. Includes setting up and breaking down additional tents, tables and signage; greeting presenters/partners, overseeing volunteers, capturing photos and assisting where necessary.
  • Liaison with on-site gleaning contacts.
  • Oversee or perform market customer attendance counts (minimum 1 x per quarter)
  • Offer extraordinary customer service experience for the public and farmers.
  • Become adept at communicating TPFM’s purpose and mission to the public.
  • Create a vibrant community at market by becoming familiar with the neighborhood and population, working with community partners, and creating a welcoming environment for all.
Experience and qualifications:
  • An ability to work every Sunday, year- round, outdoors, including during inclement weather.
  • An ability to lift 50+ pounds.
  • An ability to think on your feet and a demonstrated track record of being proactive and anticipating needs.
  • Strong communication, problem solving, and organizational skills.
  • Customer service and retail experience is preferred.
  • Food and agriculture experience or education preferred. Farmers market or on-farm experience is ideal.
  • Microsoft Office proficiency. Comfortable with numbers and basic excel functions.
Compensation:
This position is part time, and hourly; pay rate $18-$20/hour. Approximately 7 hours per week.

Maryland Agricultural Education Foundation 2021 Dr. Ronald J. Seibel Scholarship

The Maryland Agricultural Education Foundation (MAEF) is now accepting applications for its 2021 Dr. Ronald J. Seibel Scholarship, providing up to $1,000 in tuition funding to qualified college students.

Dr. Ronald J. Seibel established this scholarship fund during his lifetime to support students seeking agricultural degrees or certificates. As a former educator and longtime director of the Institute of Applied Agriculture at the University of Maryland, Dr. Seibel was a passionate supporter of agricultural education.

MAEF Academic Scholarships are open to students pursuing a two-year or four-year degree enrolled in majors leading to careers in agriculture or agriculture education at a qualifying institution. Qualified candidates should complete and submit their online application by April 1, 2021. Award announcements will be made by April 30, 2021.

This position involves high-visibility projects, requiring an understanding of both agriculture and seafood industries, grocery store and food distribution channels, advertising, social media, procurement and as well as the ability to deal effectively with food industry executives and the media. Excellent interpersonal skills, strong written and verbal communication skills (including website design/management and social media) are required. This position is required to handle changing food industry policies and serve as a conduit for information on market information to Maryland farmers, watermen, food companies, distributors and retailers. This position contributes to the success of the Department of Agriculture in its mission to support the profitability of agriculture by additionally locating, securing and administering grant-funded programs related to producers.

Colorado Rocky Mountain School Garden Paid Internship

Location: Colorado Rocky Mountain School, an independent day and boarding high school, has an organic garden program with vegetable gardens, a young orchard, a small nursery, a large scale composting system, and a water efficient public demonstration garden. CRMS is located on a 350 acre ranch in Carbondale in western Colorado between Glenwood Springs and Aspen at an elevation of 6200 feet. 

Job Responsibilities: The Garden Interns participate in all activities of the garden as needed. This includes soil preparation, planting, watering, weeding, fertilizing, planning, harvesting, cleaning produce, preparing produce for storage, maintaining tools, minor repairs on buildings and equipment and cleaning of the buildings and work areas. There also exist opportunities operate a skidsteer, participate in construction projects, and dabble in flower arranging. At times, the Intern may be called upon to work in/on the campus landscape. In addition, interns may be given responsibility over a specific project or ongoing task.

Housing: On campus (most likely a dorm room).

Stipend: $125/week paid every two weeks

Meals: Three meals daily provided when school kitchen is open. The kitchen will be open for most of the term of the internship with the exception of a few intermittent weeks usually no more than 2.5 weeks total. The interns will also have access to produce from the school garden and dry goods from the kitchen.

Time commitment: Duration and dates are flexible. 10-20 weeks at 40+ hours a week from May until September depending on the CRMS school calendar and the Intern’s availability. The interns will be required to work some weekends (on a rotating schedule with other interns and assistant- expect 1-2 weekends per month- mostly watering and light work). Due to the nature of agricultural work, typical holidays (such as Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day) will be regularly scheduled work days. Expect a heavy work load (40+ hours/week) most weeks.

Qualifications:
  • The Garden Interns should have the ability to thrive under challenging conditions
  • An ability to be flexible and respond to changes that arise because of the school calendar and the weather
  • A strong interest in organic agriculture and a strong work ethic are required
  • An ability to work and live together cooperatively is essential.
  • The internship is an experiential learning while doing opportunity and applicants must express a desire to engage in the work at hand every day.
  • A well-developed, efficient and energetic work ethic
  • The ability to use observance to initiate tasks
  • At least 18 years of age
  • Due to the presence of students on campus, all employees are required to pass a background check. This requirement poses a barrier for international applicants.
  • Must provide own transportation to CRMS
  • Ability to work in an efficient and thorough manner
  • Due to the housing available to interns/assistant, no pets are allowed
