Grant awards typically range from $5,000 to $35,000.

HRI supports research proposals that expand the market for plant material, increase crop producers’ business and financial expertise, enhance environmentally responsible management practices, or address regulatory issues and emerging opportunities in the horticultural industry. Applicants are encouraged to present projects that represent collaborative research efforts.


Researchers are challenged to focus their research on attainable outcomes that demonstrate a return on investment for all sectors of the horticulture industry in these key research priority areas:

  • Gathering Consumer Insights
  • Producing Practical and Actionable Solutions

HRI believes in helping students obtain the education necessary to successfully pursue horticultural careers. Our generous donors have created multiple scholarship opportunities for students to support their academic journey. Backing motivated students today plays a vital role in protecting and growing the industry tomorrow.


HRI will grant up to $20,000 in scholarships for the 2023-2024 school year to students seeking lifelong careers in horticulture.


The streamlined application process makes it easy for students and increases their chances of receiving the financial assistance: one application is all that is needed to submit to all available scholarship funds.

Identifying Horticultural Researchers and Horticultural Educators

HRI is developing a comprehensive database of horticultural and allied researchers


The goal of collecting this information is to:


  • Understand the areas of research, interest, and expertise to improve grant reviews, facilitate grant and research collaboration, and improve HRI educational outreach and information sharing.


  • Aggregate lists of area experts to improve input and response times to regulatory requests.


  • Identify the graduate and undergraduate educators and coordinators to aid in disseminating HRI scholarship information and other opportunities.
