USDA Agricultural Research Service (ARS) Communications Research Programs

Does cutting edge research about honeybees and other pollinators excite you? Did you know that drones are helping ensure that the irrigation water used on your salad greens is free of harmful bacteria? Would you like to learn how melting mountaintop snow can affect food production?

You can learn about these topics and more by interning with the USDA Agricultural Research Service’s Office of International Research Programs! The Office of International Research Programs (OIRP) helps create international partnerships for USDA scientists who are studying every aspect of agriculture, from improving nutrition and food safety to managing our natural resources responsibly. As an intern in our Beltsville, MD office, you will work alongside experienced professionals from diverse backgrounds including economics, plant science, education, nutrition, law, science communication, and international relations.


As a member of the OIRP team, you will:
  • Learn how to give and receive constructive feedback on written work products.
  • Assess current communications materials (online and printed).
  • Propose and implement dynamic communication and outreach strategies including web content, printed material, posters, and social media.
  • Obtain hands on experience communicating technical information to non-technical audiences.

Requirements:
  • Strong proofreading skills.
  • Experience working with PowerPoint, Prezi, web content development, and/or other communication and outreach tools.
  • Demonstrated interest in working with science and international audiences.
